What I enjoyed most about the Mark Stoops Era at Texas A&M was the minimal cost, the limited time spent together, the lack of any troubling losses to SEC rivals — mainly the good night’s sleep I got while believing him to be leaving Kentucky for Aggieland. What I find insane is that he’s not actually on his way to College Station. On Saturday night, Stoops was considered a lock for the job. By ...

Alabama’s national championship hopes came down to fourth-and-31 with a loss and more than a few close calls along the way. The Georgia Bulldogs, two-time defending champs, are still No. 1 and had a much less treacherous path to the Southeastern Conference Championship Game. The powerhouses will meet in Atlanta. The Crimson Tide beat Auburn 27-24 on Jalen Milroe’s 31-yard, fourth-down touchdown pass to Isaiah Bond with 32 seconds left.

UNLV will host Boise State in the Mountain West Conference championship game at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Saturday after a computer ranking was used to break a three-way tie for first place. Boise State, UNLV and San Jose State each finished the regular season 6-2 in conference play. Because all three teams did not face each other and no team was included in the latest College Football Playoff rankings, the tie was broken by an average of four computer rankings.

Other than the people inside the Iowa football building and the team’s most optimistic fans, few expect the Hawkeyes to pose much of a challenge to Michigan in the Big Ten championship game. FanDuel Sportsbook lists Iowa as a 22 1/2-point underdog for Saturday night’s game in Indianapolis.

Italy has won its first Davis Cup title since 1976 with a 2-0 victory over Australia. Jannik Sinner beat Alex de Miñaur 6-3, 6-0 in the second singles match of Sunday's final. Matteo Arnaldi had given Italy the first point with a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 win over Alexei Popyrin. The Italians had lost the last three finals it played against Australia, which was last year's runner-up to Canada. Sinner helped Italy defeat Novak Djokovic's Serbia in the semifinals on Saturday. Australia eliminated Finland in the last four.
