It’s an article of faith among members of the Nevada education establishment that more taxpayer support is the key to lifting the state’s public schools out of an academic morass. This belief is the driving force for the $2 billion in new education spending that lawmakers approved last month. It was the impetus for the two largest tax hikes in state history, each enacted within the past two decades.

On the final day of Pride Month, the Supreme Court delivered a blow to gay rights. In 303 Creative vs. Elenis, the conservative supermajority on the court ruled, 6-3, that a web design company could deny its wedding website services to same-sex couples. For the first time in our history, the Supreme Court granted a business open to the public a constitutional right to discriminate against would-be customers.

A bipartisan bill introduced by Sens. Charles E. Grassley, R-Iowa, and Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., would close several loopholes identified by The Washington Post in an investigative series published last fall. The investigation found hundreds of retired U.S. military officers taking lucrative jobs advising foreign governments known for human rights atrocities and political repression. The Retired Officers Conflict of Interest Act would require public reporting about who is working on behalf of which foreign governments and for how much.

President Richard Nixon and his vice president, Spiro Agnew, had never gotten along well. So it likely didn’t pain Nixon much to acquiesce in the ousting of Agnew over illegal kickbacks while Nixon struggled to keep his own job. It was 1973, and Nixon still gave every indication that he wanted to beat the Watergate rap. But that left the problem of who would fill the vacancy.

We’ve slowed down. I’m not sure why this is so. I remember when I was younger, I’d get so impatient walking or driving behind someone older, and who just couldn’t seem to move any faster. Now, I’m getting to be that person. So, I guess what I’m trying to say is give us a break. Be a little more patient and a little kinder and more thoughtful, because, guess what, you will also slow down someday. So start practicing patience this very day. We’ll all appreciate it.

With the onslaught of legislation over the past couple of years targeting LGBTQ+ youth, particularly transgender children and teens, an argument from many of the politicians leading these efforts is that providing gender-affirming care to children is child abuse.

Water can be conserved in several ways, such as changing to drought-tolerant landscaping, using drip systems, alternate watering days, watering early morning or evening, etc. One area of savings that is rarely discussed is end-user (you) leaks. This is, I believe, a common and easily-remedied situation, that can not only save a huge amount of water, but save you money as well for minimal cost and effort.

I am being forced to write this to communicate with my fellow Napans that it is critical to halt the city's frenetic plan to build a City/County building downtown. The only way to do this to be heard is by writing a letter or email to the mayor's office.
