What happens if the world finds out about vampires?
“What We Do in the Shadows” Season 5, Episode 5 finally poses that question, and answers with riotous results. “Local News,” written by Sarah Naftalis and directed by Yana Gorskaya, has the vampires thinking they’ve been outed after Nandor (Kayvan Novak) tells a local reporter that he’s centuries old, then promptly runs back to the house to tell everyone about his blunder.
Each character reacts with what is fundamentally a reasonable response to this threat. Life as they know it is over and they think they’re under attack. Nadja (Natasha Demetrious) dyes her hair, tests an alias, and gets her go-bag; Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch) insists on taking a final stand and booby trapping the house while he prepares for war; Lazslo (Matt Berry) wants to fight back with his mind, crafting a kidnapping plan that definitely has a second step.

“The Office” is remaining closed for the time being.
Leslie David Baker, a series regular on the popular NBC comedy series announced on social media Thursday that, three years after a Kickstarter campaign attempting to fund a spinoff show based on his character, he will be returning donations received to fans.
In 2020, Baker launched a Kickstarter campaign for “Uncle Stan,” a potential spinoff of “The Office” based on his character Stanley, a grumpy office worker at the fictional Dunder Mifflin Paper Company. According to the description, the series would focus on Stanley as he reluctantly comes out of retirement to help his nephew run a motorcycle/flower shop business. The campaign launched with a $300,000 crowdfunding goal, and raised $336,450 by the end of its run.
In a post on Instagram, Baker said that, although he still intends to make the project, he will return $110,629.81 in donated money to backers. In the update,...

Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Aidan (John Corbett) are back in their love bubble. Their reunion is reminiscent of when the pair first got together in Sex and the City Season 3, before Big (Chris Noth) and the weight of real commitment ruined everything. In And Just Like That… Season 2, Episode 8, “A Hundred Years Ago,” Carrie and Aidan rarely leave bed, and when they do, it’s to cook together with a big blue pot in Che’s (Sara Ramírez) kitchen, the kind of cute things that couples do together when things are still fresh.

Spoiler Alert: This review contains spoilers from “A Hundred Years Ago,” the eighth episode of Season 2 of “And Just Like That,” now streaming on Max.
I was as skeptical as anyone when it became clear that Aidan was returning to “And Just Like That.”
The “Sex and the City” character, Carrie’s other great love and one who, in his status as an obvious second choice to Big, wasn’t really so great, seemed to have run out of dramatic possibility a while ago. His appearance in “Sex and the City 2,” with a credibility-straining chance meeting in Abu Dhabi,...

A bonafide staple of TV sitcom mastery, “Seinfeld” still lands. Co-created by its namesake star Jerry Seinfeld and “Curb Your Enthusiasm” lead Larry David, NBC’s legendary half-hour comedy weathered mixed reviews when it aired its pilot episode on July 5, 1989. The freshman installment, titled “The Seinfeld Chronicles” was entertaining, no question. But the brilliantly understated beats of a stand-up comedian living in New York City and his three closest friends talking about “nothing” ad infinitum had yet to be optimized for its raucous primetime potential.
Fast-forward history’s metaphoric VHS a few years and you’ve got one of the most successful eight-handers of the small screen ever made, heralded by a bass line and championed by a cast just as recognizable. Seinfeld appeared as a fictionalized version of himself opposite Jason Alexander as George Costanza, Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Elaine Benes, and Michael Richards as Cosmo Kramer for a whopping nine seasons.

The Writers Guild of America is continuing to downplay expectations for Friday’s meeting with the studios, and is telling members that it will not be pressured into accepting a bad deal.
Ellen Stutzman, the WGA’s chief negotiator, is scheduled to meet Friday with the head of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. It will be the first formal meeting between the two sides since the writers went on strike on May 1. They are expected to discuss how to resume negotiations.
But the WGA is making it clear that does not mean that a deal is at hand.

(Above, Karyn Kusama with Courtney Eaton and Samantha Hanratty of “Yellowjackets” at Variety’s TV Fest in June.)
Somehow, Season 2 of Showtime’s hit drama “Yellowjackets” managed to keep its sense of humor, even as the series’ story got darker and, yes, it finally went full cannibal. It’s all about balancing the tone, which is something executive producer Karyn Kusama helped set last season as director of the show’s pilot.
Kusama tells Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast that the “Yellowjackets” balance of shock and guffaw comes out of the visions of executive producers/showrunners Ashley Lyle, Bart Nickerson and Jonathan Lisco.

The Big Brother Season 25 premiere featured one of the biggest surprises in the show's history. After rumors swirled around Survivor legend and recent The Traitors champion Cirie Fields joining the cast, it seemed like Cirie's son, Jared, would be the one to appear. But BB25 had one more trick up its sleeve, revealing Cirie herself in the episode's closing minutes as the surprise 17th houseguest.

When she was 14 years old, Christina Boyer was dubbed “poltergeist girl.” Throughout the 1980s, she was celebrated and studied for reportedly possessing telekinetic abilities and inciting ghostly behavior wherever she went. There were always skeptics, of course, but some of the most damning incidents were corroborated by her adoptive family, parapsychologists, and several journalists — a front-page newspaper photo of a telephone flying across the room without being touched became, at the time, the ultimate proof that something supernatural was really happening.
Years later, in 1992, Boyer was sent to jail for the murder of her 3-year-old daughter, Amber. She was once again in the media, this time being labeled as a monster and a bad mother. Her nickname was used to turn the public against her, and she’s remained in prison ever since for a crime she says she didn’t commit.

Conleth Hill told the The Times UK in a recent interview that he was “inconsolable” when he found out his character, Varys, was being killed off “Game of Thrones.” Hill was a regular face on the HBO fantasy series since its first season until Varys was burned to death by a dragon in the final season’s penultimate episode. By that point, Hill admitted, he had grown “frustrated” with the series for not staying true to his character’s all-knowing ways.
“I thought I’d done something wrong,” Hill said. “Right up until the last two series, I had no complaints at all.

Roland Emmerich’s gladiator drama “Those About to Die,” which Prime Video has acquired exclusive streaming rights for in several European territories, is an ambitious project creatively, but it also breaks new ground in business terms.
With a budget north of $150 million for a 10-episode first season, it is the most expensive independently produced European series ever. For Emmerich, the German filmmaker best known for blockbuster movies such as “Independence Day,” the show is a new departure as well as it is his first foray into television. He is directing the show, alongside Marco Kreuzpaintner, and is also an executive producer.

[Editor's Note: This post contains spoilers for the Hijack finale, "Brace Brace Brace."]
There's no denying that the creative team behind Hijack sought to authentically depict the chaos aboard Kingdom Airlines Flight 29. Even before a group of armed hijackers overtake the cockpit — a storyline that plays out in real time across seven episodes — the Idris Elba-led Apple TV+ thriller grounds its story in the relatable terror of being trapped in a confined space with stressed out strangers. To best convey these anxieties, creators George Kay and Jim Field Smith and production designer Andrew Purcell built a 164-foot set, filled it with real flight instruments, including a simulator showing KA29's route from Dubai to London, and utilized volume screens and adjustable lighting to mimic the sun's movement over the course of the flight. As Smith said in a behind-the-scenes featurette, "We've paid attention to every last detail."...

Comedy Central has announced an all-new, star-studded TV movie called Office Race coming this September. Starring Saturday Night Live alum Beck Bennett, Joel McHale, Kelsey Grammer, Alyson Hannigan, J.B. Smoove, and more, Office Race centers around “an unambitious office worker [Bennett] who goes to great lengths — specifically 26.2 miles — to defeat his exercise-obsessed, micromanaging boss [McHale],” according to Comedy Central. Erinn Hayes, Geoffrey Arend, Kylie Bunbury, Karolena Theresa, Katlyn Carlson, and Matt Richards also star. Bennett’s Pat is described as “a passionless pushover who coasts aimlessly through life until he’s goaded into running a marathon and soon discovers his love for the sport.” McHale, Pat’s boss and rival, is “a brown-nosing fitness fanatic with zero self-awareness and a crippling addiction to a quasi-legal sports drink.” Hannigan plays “Girlfriend Pat, Pat’s same-named girlfriend, who’s growing weary of his lackadaisical approach to life,” with Hayes as Rita, “a potential investor...

Despite being a week away from its original scheduled programming (August 10), Max has delayed the second season of Rap Sh!t to November 9 amid the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Season 2 is slated to debut with two episodes, followed by weekly premieres up to its December 21 finale. As labor unions are looking to protest a new deal on behalf of writers, actors are no longer allowed to promote projects from studios, although writers have limited press opportunities. Many speculate the November release date shows promise that a deal will be struck by then and talent will be able to promote the series’ second season. FX also announced that A Murder at the End of the World starring Emma Corrin would no longer debut on August 29 and will instead air sometime in November. When the series was initially renewed for a Season 2, showrunner Syreeta Singleton said, “This show and...

When Chris Eyre’s “Smoke Signals” won the audience prize in Sundance 25 years ago, the director thought the kudos would soon lead to a landslide of opportunities for Native talent. Amid a flourishing independent film scene, the road trip dramedy won acclaim and awards as the first feature written, directed and produced by Native filmmakers. But it took two decades, and a pivot to television, for Native voices to finally get a wider chance to be heard.
More than two decades later, Eyre is now an executive producer and director on AMC+’s Navajo noir series “Dark Winds,” based on the Tony Hillerman mystery novels.

Victor Gonzalez was eliminated from Love Island USA Season 5 in Episode 10. While he tells TV Insider that he “was happy leaving,” what happened with Carmen Kocourek and Carsten “Bergie” Bergersen after his elimination confirmed his suspicions that Carmen is on the show for the wrong reasons. “I [would’ve been] happier staying, keep living the experience,” he tells TV Insider after his exit, “but I was comfortable with both decisions.” Victor was sent home in the season’s first fan-voted elimination. He and Carmen were up for elimination together following a bit of a dramatic fallout of the love triangle between them and Bergie. Carmen had stolen Victor as her partner earlier in a previous episode, and then she ended up pairing up with Bergie. In Episode 9, Bergie told Carmen that Victor was telling the men in the villa that Carmen only had platonic feelings for her new partner. Carmen, wanting to put the matter to rest,...

There have certainly been musical moments in “Star Trek” before: Uhura sang while Spock played his lyre in “The Original Series”; Data and Picard duet to Gilbert and Sullivan in “Insurrection”; James Darren played a holographic nightclub singer on “Deep Space Nine.” But it took “Strange New Worlds,” the critically revered Paramount+ series nearing the end of its second season, to stage an entire musical episode.
In “Subspace Rhapsody,” Anson Mount’s Capt. Pike falls to his knees singing an emo song to his girlfriend (somewhat embarrassingly in front of everybody on the bridge of the Enterprise); Paul Wesley’s Kirk strikes a Donny Osmond-esque pose; Jess Bush’s Nurse Chapel is hoisted aloft on her back like Satine in “Moulin Rouge!”; Ethan Peck’s Spock croons about his heartbreak; Christina Chong’s La’an gets her own Howard Ashman-style “I want!” song; and actual Grammy-winning singer/Broadway...
