Historic season for Napa Valley College women’s basketball
By MARTY JAMES martyjames.sports@gmail.com
In so many ways, it was a historic season for the Napa Valley College women’s basketball team.
There is the first playoff win in school history, as the Storm started off the California Community College Athletic Association Championships by beating College of the Siskiyous, 92-80, in a Round 1 game in the Northern California Regionals in Weed.
NVC’s Makayla Kearney to continue golf career at University of Puget Sound
By MARTY JAMES martyjames.sports@gmail.com
AMERICAN CANYON – Makayla Kearney hit a low point with her golf game two years ago.
Bob Freschi, Napa Valley College’s coach, was right there to pick Kearney back up and help her when she was struggling so much with her swing.
It was in the summer of 2021. Kearney got “a little teary eyed,” according to Freschi, when her shot found the water on the fourth hole at Chardonnay Golf Club & Vineyards, the Storm’s home course.
NVC basketball star Cameron Joseph signs with University of Redlands
By MARTY JAMES martyjames.sports@gmail.com
It’s been a very good school year for Napa Valley College’s Cameron Joseph. He took on a leadership role with the Storm men’s basketball team, serving as team captain and wearing No. 1 as a 6-foot-4, 190-pound sophomore forward.
He was honored, along with four of his teammates, during pregame ceremonies on “Sophomore Night,” prior to a Bay Valley Conference game against Mendocino College-Ukiah in February.
He was named to the 2023 All-Bay Valley Conference team, it was announced in February by the California Community College Men’s Basketball Coaches Association, at www.cccmbca.org.
He played in the Sophomore Showcase, which is put on by the California Community College Men’s Basketball Coaches Association, in March at College of Sequoias, in Visalia.
Men’s golf concludes one of the greatest seasons in NVC history with fourth-place finish at state

There’s a two-word saying that coach Bob Freschi and players on the Napa Valley College men’s golf team have been using during the Storm’s spring season.
It could pop up at any time, and as Freschi put it, “It’s kind of a running thing.”
He added: “It was pretty comical the way we used it.”
The saying for the Storm is, “That’s unbelievable.”
NVC’s Tomasini tied for the lead as CCCAA state men’s golf begins in Madera
By MARTY JAMES martyjames.sports@gmail.com
It was a super day of golf for A.J. Tomasini and the Napa Valley College men’s team, as the Storm opened the 2023 California Community College Athletic Association State Championships at Dragonfly Golf Club, in Madera, on Sunday.
Tomasini soared to the top of the leaderboard, firing a sensational a 6-under-par 67, a round that was highlighted by seven birdies. He is tied with Chase Bird of Reedley College, who also had a 67, for the first-round lead. They are one shot in front of Carson Adams of Saddleback College-Mission Viejo, who had a 5-under-par 68 and is alone in third place.
NVC men’s golf on way to CCCAA State Championships
AMERICAN CANYON – Playing for the Napa Valley College men’s golf team requires a major commitment. Starting in August, players are involved with the program – practicing, playing and competing – for much of the school year.
It’s what Bob Freschi calls a long journey, a long process.
There is the fall program, which was put in place when Freschi took over as the Storm’s head coach seven years ago. Assistant coach David Knox, a PGA Class A golf professional and the Director of Instruction at Napa Golf Course at Kennedy Park, leads the fall program, which includes qualifying rounds.
“Our fall program is a big part of it,” said Freschi. “In that program, you’re developing and getting better and then qualifying for our spring roster.”
NVC’s Nanpei wins NorCal individual title, Storm advances to CCCAA state tournament
By MARTY JAMES martyjames.sports@gmail.com
Markus Nanpei of Napa Valley College won the individual title and the Storm placed third at the 2023 California Community College Athletic Association Men’s Golf Northern California Regional Championship on Tuesday. Nanpei fired a second-round 74 and completed the two-day, 36-hole event at Castle Oaks Golf Club in Ione (Amador County) at even-par 142. He won the title by one shot over Reedley College’s Chase Bird and Elias Pettersson.
NVC lands 5 players on All-Bay Valley Conference baseball team
Five players from Napa Valley College were named to the 2023 All-Bay Valley Conference baseball team, Storm head coach Dan Parker announced Tuesday.
Owen Schnaible, a sophomore pitcher, was named first-team All-Bay Valley.
Hunter Graham, a sophomore outfielder, was named second-team All-Bay Valley.
Selected as honorable mention All-Bay Valley for the Storm (13-24 overall, 8-13 Bay Valley) was Mateo Santos, a freshman pitcher-infielder; Raisean Avila-Dorsey, a freshman utility player; and Angel Cota, a sophomore second baseman.
Schnaible, a left-hander, had a big year for Napa Valley as a starting pitcher.
