Wikimedia Foundation Affiliates Strategy will be a blueprint that will guide the Wikimedia Foundation's immediate work with affiliates. This strategy will be in place to inform and guide the Wikimedia Foundation budget and support to affiliates, until some kind of Movement-wide Affiliates Strategy is developed. The target is to have a draft of the Wikimedia Foundation Affiliates Strategy for the Wikimedia Foundation Board’s approval at Wikimania 2023 in August 2023.

Input from affiliates is required[edit]

In November, Nataliia Tymkiv, Chair, Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees announced the beginning of Wikimedia Foundation Affiliate strategy. Wikimedia affiliates are a key and integral part of the Wikimedia movement and have knowledge and expertise to share. The Wikimedia movement’s success depends greatly on affiliates.

The Board embarked on building this Affiliate Strategy in collaboration with the Affiliations Committee (AffCom), staff, the affiliates, and the broader communities. This strategy is expected to help guide the Foundation’s immediate work in supporting affiliates for the next few years. Beginning in November, a review of the historical documents occurred as well as interviews with Affiliations Committee members, advisors, and current and former supporting staff, to gain insight into the past and current situation.

The next step involves reaching out to affiliates to find out their thoughts about the revised Affiliate Strategy. The goal is to assess whether the Wikimedia Foundation’s collaboration with and policy toward affiliates are promoting the right goals for our movement. This work is being organized by the Committee Support team.

Every affiliate is invited to provide input for the revised Affiliate Strategy. There are multiple ways to participate:

Live sessions[edit]

Affiliate representatives are invited to attend live sessions to provide input into this process. These sessions will be conducted in groups and the language will be English. The calls will be supported by Wikimedia Foundation staff, as well as the Board of Trustees liaisons to the Affiliations Committee (AffCom) and AffCom members subject to availability.
