SFNP[edit]

Hi, does anyone know how to add a timestamp to a reference when citing a video? What parameter is used? Cheers. — MaxnaCarta  ( 💬 • 📝 ) 01:15, 18 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@MaxnaCarta: If you use Cite AV Media, there is a "minutes" or "time" parameter you can specify for this. RudolfRed (talk) 01:24, 18 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@RudolfRed mmm that one adds a reference to the reference list. I have for example, got a media referenced like this in my bibliography. I have a separate footnote list. So what I want is an SFNP reference: ie:
References
[1] McCune 2006, timestamp 4:05
Bibliography
 • McCone 2006, Investigators.
Article specifically is Murder of Vivianne Ruiz. I cited a video 15 times. GA reviewer would like timestamps (as would I actually, but couldn't work it out myself when authoring). I try to add a custom parameter and it says "not recognised" — MaxnaCarta  ( 💬 • 📝 ) 01:28, 18 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Actually just worked it out, request withdrawn. We can add =loc then the timestamp. cheers — MaxnaCarta  ( 💬 • 📝 ) 01:30, 18 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

chatgpt[edit]

what is chatgpt?ma i use it for blogposts? Superman870 (talk) 03:28, 18 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Superman870: Hi there! See the article ChatGPT for more information. Blog posts have no place on Wikipedia, per WP:NOTBLOG. GoingBatty (talk) 04:04, 18 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
...but if you mean if you can use it for blogposts outside Wikipedia, it depends on if your editor would accept it (if you have one), and if you don't it's pretty much your choice. I personally don't like using ChatGPT/other AI for writing blogposts or stuff, but it's your chocie in the end of the day. Happy editing! 💜  melecie  talk - 08:21, 18 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Adding a reference link on Mobile commerce page[edit]

We have recently done a survey on m-commerce and I added that link on wikipedia page. What is the process for approving that link. Vijetakhurana20 (talk) 06:59, 18 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Adding a link to a site you are involved in is a conflict of interest, and you should always ask (usually on the article's talk page) rather than adding it yourself.
Furthermore, the use of external links in Wikipedia articles (other than for citations to reliable sources to verify particular statements in the article) are tightly controlled: see ELYES. ColinFine (talk) 08:19, 18 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Additing citation that is on a blacklist[edit]

Hello,

I have edited the Hollandsche Rading railway station page to include update information in the train services table based on the 2023 timetable. I would like to cite the published timteable however it seems the website is blacklisted. I have gone through the local and global list but cannot find the regex line that matches the cited website. The website in question is run by the Dutch national railway (NS). Is there a way I can whitelist or find which regex line blocks this exact website and have it fixed (I have found the whitelist process but cannot actually locate which list blocks the site)?

Thank you and regards,

Pesky ThePeskyPotato (talk) 11:13, 18 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

ThePeskyPotato, the fact that you managed to create an external link indicates that it is not in the blacklist. I'm linking it again! Instead, I think, as a new user, you introduced a new external link and triggered a captcha. Most issues like this can usually be solved by making more edits. There are many restrictions in place for new users.Sungodtemple (talkcontribs) 11:54, 18 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@ThePeskyPotato: Try again. There are fewer restrictions when your account is four days old and has made ten edits. The post here was your 11th edit which is why you could easily save the link. Before that there should have been an option to fill in a captcha when you add external links. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:15, 18 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you @Sungodtemple and @PrimeHunter. I've made a second attempt but got the same message:
"Something went wrong. Your edit was not saved because it contains a new external link to a site registered on Wikipedia's blacklist or Wikimedia's global blacklist...."
Maybe I need to have an older account and/or make more minor edits before including an external citation.
ThePeskyPotato (talk) 12:28, 18 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@ThePeskyPotato: You tried to add the url https://bit.ly/3YslLe0. We don't allow URL shortening services because they hide the real source until you click them. Simply add the link you posted here: https://nieuws.ns.nl/spoorkaart-2023-hier-te-downloaden/. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:47, 18 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@PrimeHunter Thanks for helping me debug that. I gave it a third attempt with the URL of the site (not bit.ly) from the visual editor. Automatic citation formatting then switches to the bit.ly URL, it might be that the site redirect to the URL shortner, whcih is odd. I had to manually add it in and now it works.
Thanks again. ThePeskyPotato (talk) 12:59, 18 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@ThePeskyPotato: Thanks for saying how you encountered the problem. I can reproduce it in VisualEditor. The HTML source of https://nieuws.ns.nl/spoorkaart-2023-hier-te-downloaden/ says <meta property="og:url" content="https://bit.ly/3YslLe0" />. It indicates that the website recommends using that url. There are often good reasons for a website to state a preferred url within their own domains but it sounds dumb to recommend an external URL shortener. I will look for a place to report that our citation tools should ignore such recommendations. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:20, 18 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I have reported it at phab:T336935. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:44, 18 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Problem with ZooOrg template[edit]

There is a template:ZooOrg which provides standard links to peak zoo organizations. But the links it produces for World Association of Zoos and Aquariums and Zoo and Aquarium Association (at least) are broken. Why is this allowed?[edit]

I took a screenshot shot of this. I don’t know why anyone thinks this is funny. Even if there’s accusations brought forth in court against a person, it should be worded much better in the article.

One would think that these ridiculous antics would not be tolerated for editors. Or any kind of changes should go through a vetting process.

Question about events portal[edit]

I'm a bit confused as to what counts as notable/not notable when it comes to adding things to the portal. Specifically today, Portal:Current_events/2023_May_18, I don't know if we should add this event or not so someone more experienced can tell me if it counts or not. In Charlotte, NC today, there was a gigantic 5-Alarm fire that required the response of nearly 90 medics/firefighters, the evacuation of nearly 100 people, the rescue during the fire of 15, one person sent to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, and at least 2 people still missing. A parking garage under construction caught fire - supposedly, right now, from a faulty foam sprayer igniting - and the fire spread to an apartment complex also under construction. Is this noteworthy enough to put, or not? I didn't want to put it just yet but I have many news articles handy for citations if it does need to be put. EEBuchanan (talk) 19:32, 18 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I don't know what the criteria are for including events in those lists. I suggest you ask at Portal talk:Current events. ColinFine (talk) 23:25, 18 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

How to use non-free media[edit]

Yes it does. Chacabangaso (talk) 07:43, 19 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Chacabangaso: Please provide an external link to the non-free item and a link to the article where you wish to use it, and perhaps we can help. -Arch dude (talk) 21:18, 18 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Of course, The Thief (TV series). Check the Arabic version and you will see the movie poster. Chacabangaso (talk) 07:44, 19 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Chacabangaso: Non-free files are local files; in other words, if you want to use the same file currently being used in the Arabic Wikipedia article about the TV series in the English Wikipedia article about the series, you will need to upload a version of it to English Wikipedia. You can do this by downloading the file from Arabic Wikipedia onto your computer and then reuploading it to English Wikipedia using the Wikipedia:Upload Wizard. However, not all local Wikipedia projects have absolutely the same policies when it comes to non-free content use and you will need to make sure that any file you upload to English Wikipedia satisfies English Wikipedia's non-free content use policy. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:59, 19 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Chacabangaso, you have been trying to upload a non-free image to Wikimedia Commons. This is completely wrong. Wikimedia Commons accepts only freely licensed and public domain images. Non-free works are simply not permitted there. Images that fully comply with WP:NFCI must be uploaded here on English Wikipedia for strictly limited use, normally in a single designated article. Images on Wikimedia Commons, on the other hand, can be used by anybody, anywhere, for any purpose, with no permission required, with the only requirement being attribution in some cases. These are dramatically different licensing scenarios. Cullen328 (talk) 08:01, 19 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Request for Undeletion of Biographies: Professor Matjaž Klemenčič and Professor Mitja Žagar[edit]

Dear Users,

I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to kindly request the undeletion of two biographies that I recently added to Wikipedia. The biographies in question are about distinguished Slovene researchers, Professor Matjaž Klemenčič and Professor Mitja Žagar. Unfortunately, the content was deleted, and I would like to address any concerns and have it restored. I want to assure you that I adhered to all Wikipedia rules and regulations while creating these biographies. I made every effort to ensure that the content complied with the community's content policies, such as providing reliable sources, maintaining a neutral point of view, and avoiding any promotional or biased language.

Both Professor Matjaž Klemenčič and Professor Mitja Žagar have made significant contributions to their respective fields, and their achievements are widely recognized. Including their biographies on Wikipedia would provide valuable information to readers interested in their work and accomplishments.

I kindly request that you reconsider the deletion and restore the biographies. If there are any specific concerns or issues with the content, I am more than willing to address them promptly. I am committed to ensuring that the biographies meet the high standards set by Wikipedia. Thank you for your attention to this matter, and I look forward to your favorable response. If you require any additional information or clarification, please let me know. I genuinely believe that these biographies deserve a place on Wikipedia, and I appreciate your consideration. Doncsecztalk 05:41, 19 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Doncsecz~enwiki Hi there!
Others will be able to help you better than I can, but I wanted to point out that those articles weren't "deleted"; they were just moved to the draftspace. Now, if they go six months without any revisions being done to them, then yes they would get outright deleted (at that point you would ask for their undeletion). From a glance, Klemencic has only 2 external links, and Zagar only 3. So you need more sources than that (along with footnotes/inline citations). I hope this answers at least some of your concerns.
(By the way, I recommend checking those articles out on other Wikipedia sites if they have them, as they could have more sources there. I know this because the Russian Wikipedia can have a lot more sources for certain articles than the English one, for example). Losipov (talk) 06:04, 19 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Both of these lacked reliable secondary sourcing. I can't comment on how notable these people are, but the article always needs sourcing. It cannot be written like a LinkedIn profile.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 07:12, 19 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Doncsecz~enwiki: Here on the English Wikipedia, the move to draft space is a good sign. It means the initial reviewing editor did not choose to delete the article or nominate it for deletion, because the editor felt that there is hope that the article can be improved. The absolutely critical issue for you is to add references that demonstrate that these subjects meet our notability requirements: see WP:NACADEMIC. -Arch dude (talk) 19:15, 19 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Arch dude: Yes. Those articles about the reality celebs and porn actors are more important. Doncsecztalk 11:06, 20 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Doncsecz~enwiki: ... and some of the athletes and coaches at a major university are more notable than the tenured professors, which is IMO even worse than the celebs including porn stars. But "importance" is subjective, so we use "notability" instead, and we try hard to use an objective measure of notability: the subject must have attracted sufficient notice in the general press. This is the policy the English Wikipedia has been using for two decades. You will not change this policy by commenting here on the help desk. -Arch dude (talk) 14:41, 20 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hatnote for article that is available on another language wikipedia[edit]

I'm wondering what to do regarding a hatnote where the "you could have also meant" is not available on the English wikipedia but only on the German one. The concrete example is Peter Bogner. The English wikipedia is about a German-American businessman. However the German wikipedia talks about a different Peter Bogner who is an art historian. This could be confusing. How to best resolve this?

I could only find guidance that one should not hatnote link to a redlink. But in this case, it could make sense to link to the German language article instead. AncientWalrus (talk) 12:50, 19 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@AncientWalrus: Use the Interlanguage link template. My only concern with that the articles have the same title, so the template may not work correctly to identify that the artist is a red link here and a blue link there. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 12:56, 19 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Try Peter Bogner (art historian) -> Peter Bogner (art historian) Martin of Sheffield (talk) 13:06, 19 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Over at the Betta article, an external link was added to a care guide. hi @Anidubey 91 and welcome to the Help Desk! you are already a member of Wikipedia! what do you mean by "aversion purpose" and "my younger version"? do you mean that in the past, you did things that you regret that you want to have a clean start from? 💜  melecie  talk - 11:49, 20 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Looking at the thread above, I am now wondering whether these are spam or sock edits.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 12:30, 20 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Good morning, could someone correct the title of the "Logspeed CZ Arena" page? The word "Arena" needs the acute accent ("é"). JackkBrown (talk) 13:17, 20 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

This would be accomplished (perhaps by yourself) according to WP:Move, but retaining a redirect from the non-é title would be essential because many searchers cannot conveniently input accented characters.
However, the principle of WP:Article titles#Common name must be considered. This is the English Wikipedia – in English-language sources, is the name written most commonly with or without the accent? Article titles should not be made technically correct if this reduces the practical utility of the encyclopaedia. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 90.199.210.77 (talk) 13:37, 20 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
There is no source in the article - English or Czech - which gives the name. In fact the only source in the article (which I have just rescued from the Wayback machine) is a press release about a previous renaming of the stadium. I have tagged it with several tags, including probable non-notability. JackkBrown, I suspect that you have already spent more time on this article that it is worth, and I have gone and wasted even more. ColinFine (talk) 15:50, 20 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Draft:Joseph Ferris Perry House has not in fact been submitted. --Orange Mike | Talk 18:45, 20 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
You have not submitted the draft for review. If you do so in its present state, I am confident that it will be declined, because it does not have any independent sources about the house. Please find at least three sources that meet the golden rule, or the draft has little chance of being accepted. ColinFine (talk) 18:47, 20 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Certainly, the draft needs work, such as removing trivia like "Radiators are in good working order." More references would be great. There is biographical information about Joseph Ferris Perry here. That being said, I think that there is a strong presumption that locations on the National Register of Historic Places are notable. Resources are available at Wikipedia:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places. Cullen328 (talk) 18:59, 20 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Would anyone have an idea how to change the order of the monuments in the first caption? I thought... there is an image in the middle, and therefore it's not correct to use the order "clockwise from top". Page: Pescara. JackkBrown (talk) 01:46, 21 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@JackkBrown: You can't change the photo layout unless you create a new montage like File:Pescara_Montage_2018.png. You can edit the info box to use better wording for the caption, if you like. RudolfRed (talk) 04:02, 21 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@JackkBrown: change the caption:
top: Port of Pescara and Gran Sasso d'Italia; centre: Palazzo Imperato, Fountain La Nave, Church of the Sacred Heart; bottom: Palazzo di Città, Aurum Museum
I'm not a fan of fixed montages like this as they cause difficulties like the one you're experiencing. There are other tools which could be used, such as multiple image. Bazza (talk) 09:18, 21 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The link you get from this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Västerbotten_cheese fails, the ”V” page is shown instead Replacing the ”ä” with ”a” works: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vasterbotten_cheese

Creating Serebii.net[edit]

Hi! The page Serebii.net seems to have been created and deleted several times from 2006–2007, and was indefinitely protected from being recreated in 2012. However, I see no reason why it can't be recreated today as a redirect. In fact, it currently exists under a different name: Serebii (Website) redirects to Pokémon#Fan community.

As such, I would like to request that it be recreated. I'm not an administrator and as such can't do it myself, and am also not sure where to go to officially request these types of things. I know Wikipedia:Requested articles exists, but that seems to be for requesting other editors to write standalone pages. I only want to unprotect this page and make it into a redirect.

Thank you! Loytra (talk) 09:33, 21 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

hi @Loytra and welcome to the Help Desk! you may create a draft at Draft:Serebii.net, which is not protected, and pass it through the usual Articles for creation process. Since this seems to be your first proper article (I apologize if I'm wrong), you might wanna read Your first article and Notability (as well as Reliable sources if you haven't yet, and if you had a review is still nice). happy editing! 💜  melecie  talk - 10:39, 21 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Good morning, I would like to enrich the page dedicated to Gianni Morandi. If I copy the corresponding text from Wikipedia in Italian language, translate it and paste it here, is that allowed? JackkBrown (talk) 11:56, 21 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@JackkBrown: Yes and no. A detailed answer can be found at Help:Translation. While content can be translated from another language, you must attribute where you got it from (usually via edit summary) and check to see that it complies with policies on this Wikipedia project, particularly verifiability.
Also please don't machine translate. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 12:51, 21 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

programming element. valid?[edit]

There are lot of articles with on te wiki. బొమ్మ means image. Preview does not show anything. Is it okay to remove it? As of now i am commenting it out. రుద్రుడు చెచ్క్వికి (talk) 14:01, 21 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

for example: https://te.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=%E0%B0%95%E0%B1%8D%E0%B0%AF%E0%B1%82_%E0%B0%A1%E0%B1%87%E0%B0%9F%E0%B0%BE_%E0%B0%A8%E0%B0%BF%E0%B0%B0%E0%B1%8D%E0%B0%AE%E0%B0%BE%E0%B0%A3%E0%B0%82&oldid=3883088 రుద్రుడు చెచ్క్వికి (talk) 14:23, 21 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@రుద్రుడు చెచ్క్వికి: This is the help desk for the English Wikipedia. You appear to be asking about some other Wikipedia. You will need to ask on their help desk, since different Wikipedias can have different policies and conventions. On the English Wikipedia, a construct like this would allow you to code a non-free image in a Draft article that will not appear until the draft is moved into the main namespace, or perhaps added to an article before moving it from mainspace back into draft space. This could be useful because non-free images are not permitted except in main space due to our extremely conservative interpretation of copyright law. -Arch dude (talk) 14:27, 21 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@రుద్రుడు చెచ్క్వికి: I don't know Telugu but examined the background. The code originally [2] said . It means: If the namespace is called బొమ్మ (image) then add te:వర్గం:తొలగించవలసిన బొమ్మలు which is apparently a Telugu category for images nominated for deletion. If the namespace is not బొమ్మ then add te:వర్గం:తొలగించవలసిన వ్యాసములు which is another category for pages nominated for deletion. The Telugu Wikipedia currently has no namespace called బొమ్మ (image) so the condition would be false no matter where the code is. However, long ago Wikipedia changed the "Image" namespace to be called "File" (దస్త్రం in Telugu) because it can contain other types of files than images. If the code had said దస్త్రం (file) then it would have tested whether the proposed deletion was of a file and originally used it to decide which category to add. The current version of the code has removed the categories so it does nothing. I don't know the Telugu deletion processes or language so I'm not sure whether something should be done other than removing the currently broken code. File:0x10c_logo.png is probably in the Public Domain[edit]

I've already said this on WP:MCQ , so I'll just copy-paste the same thing here so I can get a faster answer:

The tag on File:0x10c_logo.png says that it's protected by copyright but I think that it's in the Public Domain. After reading commons:COM:TOO Sweden (the country the logo originated from) and commons:COM:TOO US , I'm pretty sure the logo does not meet the threshold of originality in both countries. Is it okay if I change the tag to Template:pd-textlogo ? Zbelios (talk) 14:33, 21 May 2023 (UTC

I am not an expert in such matters, but speaking as a disinterested passer-by, it looks pretty original to me – my former profession included elements of typography and graphics, and I don't recall ever seeing that particular 3-D lettering style, so it's not just using a common typeface. My rule-of-thumb for non-originality would be "can you describe the logo in a few words that would enable someone to duplicate it accurately?" Perhaps there are better ones. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 90.199.210.77 (talk) 15:15, 21 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Can I make a page on "Tripper (Chess)" over redirect to Fairy chess pieces?[edit]

Alright, so, first things first, the Greek Wikipedia has an article on this piece, whereas the English Wikipedia has a redirect to the page on fairy pieces. Am I allowed to replace the redirect with a new article on this piece?

Signed, The Master of Hedgehogs (talk) 19:51, 21 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello. The (first part of the) answer to all questions about "Can I make an article about XXX?" is "Can you find several reliable sources, wholly independent of the subject, each of which contains significant coverage of the subject?".
If the answer is "No", then you cannot make an acceptable article about the subject.
The Greek article el:Ταξιδευτής (σκάκι) contains only two citations, both to Chessvariants.org. I'm not sure whether Wikipedia would regard that as a reliable source (The Chess Variant Pages quotes a description of it as "run by hobbyists for hobbyists"), but in any case the pages in question say "This page is written by the game's inventor, Ralph Betza", which means that it is assuredly not an independent source. So what you should not do is translate the Greek article, without finding more sources.
It seems likely that the David Pritchard book would be acceptable as a source (it is published by a reputable publisher, though whether his role as the president of the BCVS would make it non-independent is not clear to me). But you would certainly need more sources, and preferably from writers unconnected with the society. ColinFine (talk) 21:42, 21 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

P.S. The diagram on the Greek Wikipedia article shows a ship/boat Signed, The Master of Hedgehogs (talk) 19:51, 21 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

New template category not populating?[edit]

I recently created a new template, Template:27TeamBracket-3way (for a three-round knockout tournament with three competitors per match; see Celebrity Jeopardy! (2022 TV series) for an example) as well as a parent category, Category:27-Team bracket templates, which I added the new template to via its documentation, the same way that similar templates like Template:9TeamBracket-3way was added to a similar category. I'm aware there's sometimes a caching delay with categories, but it's been several days and it hasn't shown up, and the category has been tagged for speedy deletion as empty. What step have I missed? — stickguy (:^›)— || talk || 20:15, 21 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I don't think you've missed anything (i.e what you did should have worked), but you can force the caching issue to go away by WP:NULLEDITing the template. * Pppery * it has begun... 20:17, 21 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

How to locate WP initiaties?[edit]

Greetings,
How do I locate past and present WP initiatives? Today, I am specifically interested in an initiative from a few months ago called (I think) "She Said" or something similar.
Thank you for your help, Wordreader (talk) 21:31, 21 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Wordreader: You can search the project namespace with wp: in front of a search. wp:"she said" doesn't give relevant results but wp:shesaid finds a tab at Wikipedia:WikiProject Wiki Loves Women linking to meta:Wiki Loves Women/SheSaid. Some initiatives are at Meta which is not searched by our search box but you can start a search at meta: where meta:SheSaid redirects to meta:Wiki Loves Women/SheSaid.
