Squadron Photo from World War II[edit]

Hi, I would like to upload an old government photo in our family's possession for many years that was taken in June 1944 of a U.S. squadron based in the Central Pacific in World War II. Is that permisable? Thanks. Akiva123 (talk) 02:37, 29 April 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Akiva123: When you say "government photo": do you know for certain that it was taken by a military (or other) employee of the U.S. government who took the photo in the line of duty? If so, then it is certainly public domain. It was rejected automatically, as the system saw it as a probable copyright violation (a "web resolution" photo). If you have the photo, please scan it with bigger resolution. If the photo is tiny and using a big resolution really doesn't make sense, then we have to find som other solution, but if the photo is 2" wide and you scan at 600 ppi I think there will be no problem in uploading the result. –LPfi (talk) 06:44, 30 April 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
And if all you have is the low-res image, and the image is PD, you just have to upload it directly to Commons instead of doing a cross-wiki upload, because we filter the latter more heavily (far more potential copyvios in the latter, because people working on other wikis often have not given any thought it copyright of images). - Jmabel ! talk 08:13, 30 April 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hello! Thanks so much for your help. I took your advice and re-scanned the photo at 600dpi, but still get the same message: "We could not determine whether this file is suitable for Wikimedia Commons. Please only upload photos that you took yourself with your camera, or see what else is acceptable." Any other suggestions of what I might do to upload the photo successfully? Thanks in advance. @Akiva123: Second question wasn't to you, and I wouldn't expect you to know the answer. So, just to make sure: you used the Upload Wizard on Commons that I linked above, not the one on Wikipedia, and you got this result? I'm a little surprised. I don't use the Wizards myself, so I don't know all the details of the interaction, but did it give you the chance to say that the photo is in the public domain because it was of U.S. military origin?

Your previous try was a 19813-byte jpeg of 256×203 px. The new try was a 14934-byte jpeg of 128×95 px, which at 600 ppi means something like 5·4 mm. It seems something went wrong, unless I misunderstand the entries totally. @Akiva123: LPfi indicates above that these are tiny images: "a 19813-byte jpeg of 256×203 px" and "14934-byte jpeg of 128×95 px" If that latter is 600dpi, that is smaller than a human fingernail, so I suspect there is something wrong with the files. What does your own system say about the file size and dimensions of the file you are trying to upload (if it's a PC, you can get the dimensions via Properties)? - Jmabel ! talk 02:15, 4 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The original photo is letter paper in size (8.5 x 11 inches). I scanned the photo on a flatbed printer, choosing the 600 dpi option. The resulting JPEG is 15KB in size and 128 x 95 in dimensions. Does that help? Really appreciate your help! Akiva123 (talk) 02:57, 4 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Odd. 128px/11" would be less than 12 ppi, i.e. each pixel would cover some 2×2 mm. Does the resulting image look like that? Is the original fuzzy enough for that to make sense? –LPfi (talk) 07:35, 4 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

With that large an original you could try with the default scanner settings. Did those result in the 256×203 px file? Look at the files you tried to upload, in full resolution, and compare to the original: Do they look the same? Did the scans capture all detail? If the scans indeed are good, then we should get them here (I think what you got at upload were just warnings, you might be able to just go ahead), but to me it seems there is some weirdness to be solved. –LPfi (talk) 07:46, 4 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Change of pictures[edit]

Hi! I have for a very long time wondered about how to change pictures. I've been using Wikipedia and Wikibooks for about 20 years now and I have never understood how to change a picture. I mainly upload circuit diagrams and often I see a tiny thing that I wish to change. Up till now the only solution has been to upload a new picture with another name. But I think it is a sad thing if Commons has a lot of pictures that are not relevant. So how do I do if I wish to edit a picture? Knoppson (talk) 21:13, 29 April 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

If you want to upload a new version of an image, there's normally a link "Upload a new version of this file" below, which should do just that. You should only do this for correcting obvious errors. If your change is more a matter of opinion or taste, it is better to upload a new image and let the Wikimedians of the respective Wikipedias choose which image to use in their articles. For disk space, it doesn't make a difference, all versions of a file are kept, anyhow. --rimshot^talk 22:15, 29 April 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The link is at the file description page. Sometimes clicking the image lands you on the "image viewer" instead, and then you have to click "more information" or the like to get to the proper description. If you overwrite an existing image with a new image, you should check whether or not the change will affect any Wikipedia articles. If it does, you should either create a new name for the updated file, modify the relevant Wikipedia entry or notify somebody on the relevant Wikipedia of the change.

As an example, I update the image File:IBANMap-World6.svg as and when new countries adopt the IBAN. The image has the date of last update on it. I checked all Wikipedias that used the file and I updated one of them myself. For reasons that I need not discuss here, I have been blocked on the Simple Wikipedia, so I contacted an administrator who got shirty with me. As a result when that image is used on Simple:International_Bank_Account_Number, the caption does not make sense - not my fault, the administrator's fault! In response to your question, yes, I pinged both User:Auntof6 and User:Djsasso from my Talk page one two separate occasions to inform them that the map had been updated and that the caption was out of date. On the first occasion (22 February 2021), one of them updated the caption. However on the second occasion (24 November 2021) regarding a further update, I had my talk page access removed. File type not accepted[edit]

@BhamBoi: the image there is a JPEG, so whatever problem you are having is not about the file type. Just to make sure you know: you can't upload to Commons directly from an arbitrary Internet site. Most likely it is a jpeg, but the file extension is for some reason jfif. If that is the case, than renaming it to jpg, jpeg or JPeG should be enough to upload at commons. There is a lossless variant of jpeg (jpeg2000?) that is patented and not allowed at commons. In that case loading with gimp and saving with a quality of 99% or less should do the trick. JFIF is actually JPEG. Sometimes files found online have a different extension than a standard, which may fool Commons into thinking the file type is not supported. If you rename the .jfif extension into .jpg, Commons should actually accept the file with no issues (if you are on Windows, you may need to disable "Hide known file extensions" option in Windows Explorer settings, Linux users shouldn't have this issue). If Commons still reject the file for being of an unsupported file type, then use a conversion tool or open it in a graphics editor (GIMP is a free and open source alternative to let's say Photoshop) and simply save the opened image as JPEG, with the .jpg extension. @Molcegen: within 7 days of upload, if the file isn't being used on any Wikimedia projects, you can use {{Speedy|G7 User request}} as described above.

Uploading an image from the english wikipedia to here in order to be able to use it globally[edit]

Logos like the one being questioned frequently fall under the threshold of originality, and it's not particularly clear whether they do. That's also one possible explanation. To be fair though, it's sometimes quite hard to tell, especially if you don't specifically know the country of origin. Take a look at COM:TOO#Czech Republic

The work must be "a unique outcome of the creative activity of the author".^{[121/2000–2006 Art.2(1)]}
For photographs and computer programs, it suffices if the work "is original in the sense that it is the author’s own intellectual creation".^{[121/2000–2006 Art.2(2)]}

@Carlostad: There are two circumstances under which such a picture would be welcome:

If you make significant contributions to Commons or to some other WMF project, then it is reasonable to have a small number of personal photos for your User page on any given WMF wiki. However, since the question above appears to be your first contribution to any WMF projects, you would not yet qualify to do that. Make a few dozen useful contributions before you upload a selfie on this basis (and then use it on your user page, or it will be deleted as an unused personal photo).

If you happen to be "notable" -- e.g. if there is a Wikipedia article about you, or you play a significant role in something about which there is an article, Commons category, etc. -- then, sure. But I'm guessing that is not the case, or you probably would have mentioned it.

how illustrate quality of an image[edit]

I'm seeking to update a Wikipedia article on "Active-Matrix Liquid Crystal Display." A prior contributor claimed that the "first functional AMLCD" was made at Westinghouse in 1972. Descriptions of their work indicate that they were only able to display a very low resolution "image" without grey scale; it had 36 pixels as I recall. At the time, in competition, Hughes Aircraft Company was working on building a 100x100 10,000 pixel Active Matrix Liquid Crystal Display. The concept was granted patent 3,862,360 on 01Jan.'75. In contrast to the Westinghouse approach, Hughes was showing live off-the-air television on its display. I'd like to be able to teach the state of the art at that time by presenting an photo of the display displaying a facsimile of a photo that had been published in a magazine.

To my knowledge, the Hughes was the first to demonstrate recognizable moving images on a liquid crystal display panel. At another time I can tell the story of why Hughes did not follow through to make it into the commercial product that it has become.

The photo teaches the state of the art of Hughes’ display technology in 1975. The photo was taken by a photographer from the Hughes Aircraft Company photo laboratory in Culver City.

The image, shows a low-resolution facsimile of a portion of an image of a woman as it was being displayed on a liquid crystal display. The display shows a facsimile of a photo originally printed in a magazine on photography; its poor quality renders it useless for commercial opportunities.

A similar image of the same face was published in the “Electronics” magazine, February 19,1976, page 29. In 1976, Electronics magazine was published by McGraw-Hill Inc. ; it ceased publication in 1995. A publication clearance was obtained prior to the appearance of the photo in Electronics magazine, but the documentation has since been lost.

The image was also published In the "HUGHES NEWS," Vol 35, No. 6, March 19, 1976, page 1.

Although a similar image can be found on the Internet, the low quality of the image does not communicate the status of the technology in 1975. The image can be found in the IR Handbook edited by Wolfe & Zissis, published by the Environmental Research Institute of Michigan for the Office of Naval Research, Dept. of the Navy, Washington DC., 1978 An electronic copy of the handbook can be found at https://apps.dtic.mil/sti/pdfs/ADA100015.pdf, and the image appears on page 18-14, web page 1261 of 1765. I am cited as a contributor to that handbook on page viii.

Threshold of originality[edit]

Take a look at w:File:Junkee Media.png. Surely this does not pass the threshold of originality, right? It's a simple typeset with a rotated square (diamond) in the centre. I'm aware that different places have different agreements on what surpasses and what does not surpass the threshold, but I'm curious as to if this even needs a non-free media use rationale? It seems to me like it doesn't pass. I'm asking this partially because I want to know if it's okay to transfer this to Commons in the first place as it doesn't seem like it'd do any wrong. MP3 is a free format and you can upload mp3s as soon as you are an experienced user. You can also transcode the mp3 to OGGvorbis (and upload with the file extension .oga) or to opus (the audio format of webm), wav, or flac (for best quality). Ok. I would still prefer OGG Vorbis or Opus than MP3. Reason behind this is that OGG and Opus are arguiably better formats, more efficient and better quality, while maitaining the same bitrate. @Nathaniel Gambao: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/192 by trying to upload mp3 files with insufficient rights and another filter. Too many people try to upload audio files that are still copyrighted by the authors, performers, recorders, publishing companies, etc. without proper licenses from those people. Please document fully the sources and licenses of your audio uploads, and request Autopatrol group membership at COM:RFR when you think you are ready (once you have made more than 500 useful non-botlike edits); having that should allow you to upload mp3 files. I don't think all national anthems are in the public domain (PD). In some countries there is special legislation making them PD, but mostly they follow normal copyright laws. If the score (and text, if sung) isn't very old it may very well be under copyright: for most countries copyright extends 70 years after the composer's death. Majority of countries however utilize special law which makes all works related to government (including national anthems) public domain. Yes, Germany is like that. Their federal police symbols are also copyrighted, you cannot use them in any way without a license, and therefore those symbols cannot be found on Commons eighter. And German Wikipedia doesn't allow Fair Use, so you can't find it there eighter. Czechia does actually issue government documents in public domain, that's by law. That includes our national anthem as well. I'm not sure about the status of a performance by an official state philharmonic orchestra though, and I don't know if the sound file even is on Commons. Pixels in jpeg files are always square. In most videos, the pixels are also square, but they can also have any other aspect ratio. Therefore, the aspect ratio of the pixels is also stored in videos. This is possibly one such video, and the image extraction has naively assumed square pixels. Downloading the video and using ffmpeg to extract an image could already be the solution. For example, Category:62-68 South Washington Street (Seattle) is a fairly good example of getting it right. The italian wiki page of Enrico Piaggio has of photo of him. The english page has no photo and I would like to add the same as in the italian page. As the person is died it is possible to load a minimal image of the person under fair-use/non-free cootent criterial to accompany the article w:en:Enrico Piaggio. My impression of w:it:File:Enrico piaggio.jpg is that it would need to be tastefully cropped about the head and shoulders to get the required size/resolution. Uploading Photographs from a Mediæval Manuscript[edit]

I am unsure about whether I may be able to upload photographs I took of a Mediæval manuscript that I was permitted to view at Hereford Cathedral - that being a Wycliffe Bible of 1420. The Cathedral staff told me I am permitted to share the photos, although I must give full credit to the Cathedral & its library for them, and they cannot be used for monetary gain. Would this condition prevent me from being allowed to upload them to the collection of examples of Scribal Abbreviations (the category linked below)? Any help would be greatly appreciated. @Nusrich 06: The Cathedral staff has no right on your pictures of a public domain document. So you can publish them on Commons (or elsewhere) under the conditions you choose. On Commons, the images should be under a free license. Hello! I often use Wikimedia Commons to find useful items like images or video clips to incorporate into my projects. However, it is really hard for me to keep track of the items I've viewed and want to remember. Is there a way within Wikimedia Commons for me to keep lists of the items I'm interested in in one place? I know there is the Watchlist, but there doesn't seem to be a way to categorise/organise things in that list, and I might not actually want to watch for changes, just a way to remember items. Then I used an online service to convert the PDF file to an SVG file. Is there anything else that I should do to make the file acceptable?

@RobbieIanMorrison: I believe I've fixed it for you; no reason to delete. If you want the font a little bigger than I've made it so it fills a bit more of the box, you can pick a size in between my 5px and your 5.66 (or whatever it was, sorry I didn't make a note).

@Cherrell410: Assuming this is talking about uploads to Commons (as against some context such as a record review where "fair use" might be allowed), and we are not talking about (for example) century-old artwork, the answer is almost always going to be, "only by having an explicit, sufficiently free license granted by the copyright-holder of the artwork in question." Most cover art is copyrightable and, in most countries, copyrightable work is automatically copyrighted at creation. The webm file at archive org is 693MB. Most Upload tools for commons will fail with files larger than 600MB or 1.2GB (The HTTP500 response you get is typical for that). You can however download the video and than upload with either Rillke's bigchunkedupload script or with the free version of Offroader. First of all, the document is marked as your own work, which I assume is incorrect. I'm not sure if the document can be considered public domain, so I'll leave that up to someone more competent. As to the article in Catalan Wikipedia: what you have to do is to provide references that prove the notability and factual accuracy of the subject presented. References should be from independent sources, which means that there shouldn't be a serious doubt about the source independency on the subject matter. Also, references should be inserted using <ref>source</ref> directly in text providing direct sourcing for claims in the article text. The list of references is then generated by <references />. Some people also tend to insert <ref name="sourcename" /> tags with a unique name for each reference in the article in the text, and insert actual references <ref name="sourcename">source text</ref> inside <references></references> tags pair (it works identically to the most used approach, and I would argue it also works better because if you use wikicode editor like me, it can get quite chaotic with all the references breaking up the text flow, which this approach solves). Images are just for decoration, to fill up some missing space, but they're not as important as source links in references (and by link I mean referencing a source of the claim - could be a book source, without an online link, but it gives you an idea where to find the source in libraries, especially with ISBN specified). That depends on if you own the rights for the picture (eighter you are the photographer, which often the photographer by default owns rights, unless you transfer your rights to someone else, or the photographer transferred their rights to you). As rights owner you have the power to release the picture under a free license (see COM:L for details), so yes, you may be able to upload the picture under the specified license. But in order to do so, you would eighter update the page where the copyright is located so it includes the free license, or you would have to go through the process explained in COM:VRT. @Ghada Medhat: Let me see if I can say that more clearly. You don't say what country, but assuming the picture was taken in the last 30 years or so, there are almost no countries in the world where writing the word "copyright" on the photo matters. The picture is copyrighted on creation by its photographer, and copyright belongs to the photographer unless it is explicitly transferred (in most countries this can only be done in writing). Only the owner of the copyright can grant a license.

The only simple cases for uploading a photo to Commons are:

The photo is in the public domain (clearly not applicable here)
You took the photo and have never published it.
The photo is already published elsewhere with a free license acceptable to Commons.

Otherwise, the copyright-holder needs to go through COM:VRT. For example, here, if someone else took the photo and transferred the rights to you, we'd need you to go through the VRT process to show the document that grants you copyright.

On top of that: typically Commons isn't that interested in pictures of people's pets unless either there is something unusual about the animal or it is a notably good photo.

The rationale may or may not be accepted. I'm a relatively-new user of the main Wikipedia site, and I was trying to upload an image to use for a page draft, The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster (which I'm still waiting to get published). I found the poster on the IMDb page for the film while looking for any extra updates. I don't know who created the poster, so that's what I put in the description page for the image.

I want it clear that I was not attempting to violate copyright restrictions in any way. I was asked to put this page together by the company producing the film, and when I found the poster online, I thought it would be right to add it to the draft. @Doodleferp: more to the point on that last, the poster can only be added to Commons if they are willing to give a free license for it. If they are, then there are two ways they can convey that:

On a site obviously under control of the copyright-holder, they can offer that license. For example, if the people who have made the film have obtained all rights to the poster and there is a web site for the film, the license for the poster could be indicated there. Then you (or anyone) can site that on the relevant file page.
Someone who is authorized to represent the copyright-holder can go through the process outlined at COM:VRT to confirm the license. Either they can reference an online copy of the poster or use an email attachment to be clear on what work they are granting a license.

@Gitz6666: The warning message merely reminds you that you forgot to use a recognized template to indicate a license. The template for License ouverte is Licence Ouverte (or Licence Ouverte 2 for version 2). However, I think you may be mistaken in your estimation that the book would be under that license. For two reasons. Firstly, the page Conditions de réutilisations des données de la BnF only says that the BnF offers its descriptive notices (biographic notices, authority notices) under that license, not the books or other items in its collection. Secondly, even if the BNF offered a license on items, it can only offer a license on items on which it holds the copyright, and nothing indicates that it ever held a copyright on this book. You are correct to say that the works of Mathieu Pieters (1877-1950) are in the public domain in Europe per the 70 years rule. A template for that is PD-old. (For the internal policy of Commons, it's not so much the place of publication of the French version of the book that matters but the place of first publication of the photo, which was not necessarily first published in this version of the book but possibly in the Netherlands, but that doesn't affect the conclusion of public domain in Europe. However, the photo may not be in the public domain in the United States (see URAA artist/doc)). Unable to find license for wartime photos[edit]

I'm trying to find some photos of the corvette HMS Hollyhock to add to the page for it, since I've became quite invested in making the page as informing as possible. I've found quite a few photos of her, but most of them were taken when she was sailed during the second world war, and I am unable to tell if they would be suitable for upload. The two photos that I would like to upload can be found on a memorial website for the ship (hmshollyhock.com) but I can't find anything with respects to the license of the photos. My understanding is that the photos are old enough that they're available for use, but I decided it would be better to ask about it.

I recently uploaded an image, but didn't notice some unsightly border artifacts. I have the exact same image, but without the artifacts that I'd like to replace the original image with. I tried clicking the "Upload new image" button but I don't want to change any of the meta data including image title etc. I want the new image to be be picked up automatically in the article that uses it. Why did you indicate the date of the opening of an exhibition at the Munich museum as the date of creation of the photos? This is Commons. Non-free images are not allowed at Commons. English Wikipedia (is it english Wikipedia, or Wikinews, Wiktionary, or another english wiki?) has a fair use policy. You will find the english wikipeida fair use policy at the english wikipedia, but not at commons. If you need help to understand the english wikipedia fair use policy you should ask at the english wikipedia. The community at the english wikipedia may be able to help you with the english wikipedia fair use policy, but it is unlikely that the community at commons will be able to do that. I've been unable to find an example or the code to put a navbox at the top of a category of a certain volume of a magazine to be able to move to the next volume of that magazine. I'm probably not using the right search terms, it's been kicking my **s so I've come here for help. This is one of the categories I'm talking about https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Thomas_Butler_Gunn_Diaries,_Volume_6 I want to be able to move to either volume 5 or volume 7 from this page without having to go back to the parent category.
