MediaWiki talk:Titleblacklist
MediaWiki:Titleblacklist is used to prevent uploads, page moves, or creations/edits to certain pages. Depending on the entry of the blacklist, some page titles can be edited by autoconfirmed users as well. This interface message or skin may also be documented on MediaWiki.org or translatewiki.net. The page forms part of the MediaWiki interface, and can only be edited by administrators and interface editors. To request a change to the page, add {{edit fully-protected}} to this page, followed by a description of your request. Consider announcing discussions you add here at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical) to bring more people to the discussion. |
- The following instructions were copied from mw:Extension:Title Blacklist.
The title blacklist is maintained as a system message MediaWiki:Titleblacklist.
This page consists of regular expressions, each on a separate line. For example:
Foo <autoconfirmed|noedit|errmsg=blacklisted-testpage> Bar #No one should create article about it
There is no need to use "^" at the beginning and "$" at the end; these are added automatically.
Each entry may also contain optional attributes, enclosed in <>
and divided by |
- autoconfirmed — only non-autoconfirmed users are unable to create/upload/move such pages
- noedit — users are also unable to edit this page
- casesensitive — don't ignore case when checking title for being blacklisted
- errmsg — the name of the message that should be displayed instead of standard
When the action is blocked, one of the following messages is displayed together with the filter row (as $1): titleblacklist-forbidden-edit, titleblacklist-forbidden-move, titleblacklist-forbidden-new-account or titleblacklist-forbidden-upload. Generic filenames have their own custom error message, MediaWiki:Titleblacklist-custom-imagename.
There is also MediaWiki:Titlewhitelist and a global title blacklist.
Only administrators, page movers and template editors can override this list on all actions. When they override this list when creating or editing a page, MediaWiki:Titleblacklist-warning is displayed. Account creators can override this list on account creations only.
The username blacklist is handled at meta:Title blacklist by adding entries with the <newaccountonly> parameter.

Beaner[edit]
I have compiled a list of all the pages, existing or deleted, that contain the anti-Mexican ethnic slur beaner — specifically, matching the regex .*[Bb]eaner.*
— in the title at the Quarry, using code recycled from the Ronald Merkle request above. The results consist mostly of user talk pages, many for users blocked for vandalism or offensive usernames. Aside from Beaner itself, the only mainspace pages matching the word are:
- Barney's Beanery
- Redirects to Biggby Coffee: Beaner's, Beaner's Coffee, Beaner's Gourmet Coffee, Beaners
- Beaner Lake
- Coffee Beanery
- The Beanery
Any thoughts, particularly pertaining to beanery? –LaundryPizza03 (dc̄) 06:35, 1 September 2022 (UTC)
- Entries on the title blacklist are case-insensitive by default, which is my regex matches at Quarry always start (?i). They can be overridden to be case-sensitive, but that's usually counterproductive - most vandals determined to start a page like Draft:Why boss is a fat beaner would try Draft:WHY BOSS IS A FAT BEANER before things like Draft:Why boss is a fat b e a n e r or such. Case-sensitivity here misses BEANER'S Gourmet Coffee, User:BEANER, User talk:BEANER, User talk:BEANER101, User talk:BEANER666, User talk:BEanerWIThaBURRItOgun, and User talk:YOUNGBEANER (which we'd want it to match) and also User:Proud2BeaNerd, User talk:Proud2BeaNerd, User talk:CaribbeanErasmus, User talk:TheBeaNerd, File:BengeoBeaneRoad.jpg (which we wouldn't).Separately, that's enough false positives in mainspace compared to the number of true positives outside userspace that I wouldn't ever consider blacklisting this myself. —Cryptic 22:27, 4 September 2022 (UTC)

False positive match for title containing ayin ring[edit]
A title containing a modifier letter left half ring, used in some contexts for transliteration of Arabic, threw a false-positive match for a blacklist entry beginning with (?!(User
— it is unclear which one — when I attempted to move the article Abū al‐ʿUqūl to the same title with a hyphen-minus instead of the non-ASCII hyphen. –LaundryPizza03 (dc̄) 13:09, 29 December 2022 (UTC)
- My tests have shown that. For example, attempting to move User:LaundryPizza03/Happy 'Ayin, al-Iktibar (with an apostrophe) to User:LaundryPizza03/Happy ʿAyin, al-Iktibar (with an ayin) failed. In the meantime, the article has been moved by WP:RM/TR and then I moved it to Abu al-'Uqul using the basic romanization, per WP:TITLESPECIALCHARACTERS. –LaundryPizza03 (dc̄) 16:18, 29 December 2022 (UTC)

I believe this is an uncontroversial entry because the Special talk: namespace does not exist, and new users might be confused where to discuss special pages or report bugs for them. A new user might assume that "Special talk:ListUsers" is the talk page for "Special:ListUsers", given Wikipedia talk:About and Talk:About are talk pages. MediaWiki does not have special talk pages and showing a notice letting them know where the actual talk page is will be helpful for new users. Aasim - Herrscher of Wikis ❄️ 17:18, 10 April 2023 (UTC)
- I object. This is a solution in search of a problem. * Pppery * it has begun... 01:49, 17 April 2023 (UTC)
- @Awesome Aasim do you have any evidence that this is actually a problem? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 07:46, 17 April 2023 (UTC)
- Pages with this sort of title have been deleted about a dozen times. Once even in the last decade! And I suppose there might have been moves without redirects, but those aren't as easy to look for. —Cryptic 10:07, 17 April 2023 (UTC)
- No, wait, it's only the move target that's ridiculous to check. Still, the only move ever from this title pattern was this test in 2012. —Cryptic 10:13, 17 April 2023 (UTC)

Removing an entry?[edit]
I don't usually mess with the blacklist, but Ticket:2023040210003924 was requesting the removal of an entry, and it seemed reasonable enough. What's the usual procedure for removing items from the blacklist? CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n!⚓ 21:36, 20 April 2023 (UTC)
