@Ai-ml-enthusiast The draft looks much better but will, I think, fail to be accepted if/when you submit it to WP:AfC. The problem is that you haven't (in my opinion) got over the hurdle of showing that the company is notable as defined by Wikipedia. Most of the content is WP:RUNOFTHEMILL stuff that all companies do. The more promising parts, where you say they have won awards (e.g. refs #13, #14), lead to sponsored awards of dubious value that seem to be given out to a large number of entities. Gotcha. I was trying to do a total profiling of the Chargeback_insurance space because the companies operating in it were early adopters of AI/ML in their business. This was the only player that didn't already have a page; the others being Riskified, Forter, and ClearSale. You're right about the "best places to work" awards. I'll cut that. @多多123 Actually, I don't think so. Per [1] you made this with something called https://www.bing.com/create (I get to see a Swedish-language version). That page has a link to terms of agreement (again, Swedish for me), which states that you can use the creations outside their online services, for personal, non-commercial purposes. Swedish newspaper source access

I would like to access some Swedish language newspapers to expand and improve an article. The Ängelholm UFO memorial has several reliable sources that are behind paywalls or partial paywalls where only the introduction is visible. I'm familiar with Wikipedia access to newspapers.com and the Wikipedia library, but these Swedish newspapers do not appear to be included. I attempted to sign up for a trial month using machine translation, but this appears to be available only to residents of Sweden. The specific source links are:

Copying between projects

The draft has not been resubmitted for review, so it's not currently being considered. I agree that the level of English prose is poor, and the draft won't be accepted unless a volunteer editor does some extensive copyediting and rewording. Some sections like "Aug 7's in the 2006 before 100 km/h (60 mph) Bopha's 2006 Pacific typhoon season and removed on Aug 8. but Luzon. by Bopha and Aug 10 Floods more homes are removed. in Aug and 3 typhoon's as images the storm end Aug 10." are pretty much indecipherable. Uploading Image of a living person.

Hi

I found an article about a living person that can use his image for better understanding and originality. The person has provided his image for public display on his own private website. Can i source his image from there and use it on wikipedia article?

Hello, Jatin1219. You must assume that any photo you find on the internet is restricted by copyright laws, unless you find solid evidence to the contrary. Any photo of a living person must be either freely licensed or in the public domain to be used on Wikipediah. Anything you find on Wikimedia Commons is OK to use. Photos taken by employees of the U.S. federal government while performing their job duties are in the public domain. A small percentage of photos on Flickr are freely licenced. The vast majority of other photos of living people are copyright restricted and cannot be used on Wikipedia. Cullen328 (talk) 06:21, 27 March 2023 (UTC)

Also be aware that, in most cases, the photographer holds the copyright, not the subject of a portrait, unless there is a written legal agreement reassigning the copyright for money. I found pictures available on wikimedia either sourced from random website (example this pic is sourced from this random website) or even from youtube thumbnails(example ). The secound example says that picture available on youtube thumbnails are in common licence. Is it true?

@Jatin1219 On your first example, scroll down and read under "Licensing". The uploader has proved, via mailcontact, that the image is ok. There is a system for this in place, because sometimes copyrightholders think that "donating" pics is a good idea. In the YT case, check where it says "License" above the comments[5]. Uploaders on YT can publish their stuff under such licenses if they want. Not that Commons (or WP) is error free [6][7], but these examples seem fine. Your options: A) contact the photographer and convince that person to create a Wikipedia account and donate the photograph to Commons for free use everywhere; B) contact the subject of the Wikipedia article and convince that person to take a selfie, create an account and submit the photo; C) stalk the celebrity to take your own photo. Please read Wikipedia:Controlling search engine indexing. New articles are not indexed for search engines unless the page has either been reviewed by the Wikipedia:New pages patrol, or 90 days has gone by, whichever comes first. Definition of Alumnus?

Hello and good morning. Q: What is the accepted definition of "alumnus" here on Wikipedia? Merriam-Webster gives us: 1) a person who has attended or has graduated from a particular school, college, or university; 2) a person who is a former member, employee, contributor, or inmate. Do these correspond with WP:MOS and/or house style? (I'm specifically interested in knowing whether a person's attendance at a particular educational institution is sufficient to state that they are an alumnus/alumna.) Cl3phact0, WP:ALUMNI is part of Wikipedia:WikiProject Schools/Article advice, which isn't obviously about tertiary education. And the notion that somebody who's spent just a single day "on a school roll" thereby becomes an alumnus of the place is (for me) risible; it sounds like the kind of nonsense that's trotted out by a politician caught for having faked their CV. Wiktionary (of course not the only authority, if an authority at all) says of alumnus: "A male pupil or student. / A male graduate. / A student of any gender. / A graduate of any gender." This doesn't even cover people who went to a school for years but for one reason or another didn't graduate from it. -- Hoary (talk) 13:03, 27 March 2023 (UTC)

Thank you, Hoary. In truth, I would agree with you that mere matriculation and a casual stroll across the quad does not an alumnus make. In fact, I was a bit surprised by the definition (both Webster's and the above mentioned WP source). I had it in my mind that the term referred to a graduate of an institution. That said, I did doubt myself enough to look it up in the dictionary – and who am I to contradict either of the above sources, after all? This is the article and section that prompted my question, and in particular, whether (based on the parenthetical clause) the Iain Duncan Smith article should be included in Category:Università per Stranieri di Perugia alumni (which I created and populated in relation to Marva Griffin article). Cl3phact0, later this week I may have an opportunity to look in the OED for graduate. If I can, I'll let you know what it says. In the meantime, the iWeb corpus offers for example this from a University of Birmingham page: "Be an alumnus of the University, which includes any student who has undertaken an undergraduate degree or exchange programme (for no less than one semester) at Birmingham. It also includes current final-year undergraduate students." (That's from this page, which no longer exists; though I'd guess that it lives on c/o the Wayback Machine.) -- Hoary (talk) 22:39, 27 March 2023 (UTC)

Cl3phact0, unfortunately the OED isn't helpful. It has three definitions in its entry (revised in September 2022) for alumnus: the first (labelled "obsolete") is of "a pupil or student attending" a school. The third ("2.b", labelled "colloquial") is of people who've been through organizations other than schools. It's the second ("2.a") that's relevant here: "A former pupil or student (typically male) of a particular school, university, etc.; a graduate of a particular seat of learning. The singular alumnus almost always refers to a male, but the plural alumni is often used to refer to graduates of either sex." Which of course just raises the question of what a "pupil" or "student" is. I think it's worth mentioning that the definition at the top of this section is a very American one. Here in Australia we only ever speak of someone being an alumnus of a university, or what Americans call a college. ("College" has a very differnt meaning here.) It certainly doesn't inculde schools. The Birmingham example above seems a close match to Australian usage. While Wikipeida can choose to apply whatever defeinition it likes, editors need to be aware that it only makes sense in one part of the world. HiLo48 (talk) 02:16, 28 March 2023 (UTC)

And, Cl3phact0, I'll concede that alumn? can be vacuous. This page tells us: "The Scouting Alumni Association defines alumni as everyone positively and personally impacted by the Boy Scouts of America. That includes former Scouts, family members of Scouts past and present, community leaders and millions of Americans who benefit from Scouting in their communities every day." Yet context is important. The organization hosting the web page I've just quoted wants to get donations, and of course the larger the target group, the more donations they're likely to get. (A matter that's pointed out here -- another page that discusses a definition.) However, neither Wikipedia nor most of its readers would profit from an extraordinarily wide definition of alumnus. More mainstream: "An GRCC/JC alumnus is defined as an individual who has earned 30 credits or more from GRCC/JC" (source); "Alumnus is defined as a person who has obtained a degree, certificate or diploma from the College, or its immediate predecessor, Mitchell College" (source, an earlier version of this). -- Hoary (talk) 08:18, 28 March 2023 (UTC)

hi ip user! it's best not to cite Wikipedia directly for your work. it's instead best to cite (and before citing, check) the source/s attached to ensure that what the article is saying is accurate to what the source is saying. it's probably not acceptable to use Wikipedia directly in most cases when you're working with a publisher. however, if you're citing something about Wikipedia itself, such as articles in the Signpost. there's much more information in Citing Wikipedia regarding this. happy writing! 💜  melecie  talk - 08:03, 27 March 2023 (UTC)

@Blaze Wolf If I am wrong, I'll gracefully bow out, but I understood this to explicitly refer only to the actual copied material from Wikipedia, not say the entire book. So for example, if I write a book, and include one paragraph from Wikipedia, I must correctly attribute Wikipedia, and if I slightly rephrase, even that rephrasing must also be Share-Alike per your point, but entire book? This distinguishes "the Work", i.e. the Wikipedia bit, from "the Collection" which is the whole of the eBook incorporating the Work and says this does not require the Collection apart from the Work itself to be made subject to the terms of this License Mike Turnbull (talk) 11:54, 28 March 2023 (UTC)

Rules regarding reliable sources about Kickstarter projects

When the subject of an article has a Kickstarter campaign can the project's Kickstarter page be used as a source of information about the project or is an independent source required? If it can be used does it matter whether the campaign is ongoing or completed and whether it is successful or not? I would appreciate a general answer, but in case it matters: I am considering adding the title and the campaign goal of a film project and the fact that the campaign was successful. @Random person no 362478479 I would treat the Kickstarter page like we treat the subject's own webpage, since it is certainly not WP:INDEPENDENT. Hence the information can be used as in WP:ABOUTSELF but will not contribute to the notability. If you are creating a new article/draft we need about three sources meeting these golden rules. JXNLegacy, Taryll Jackson started as a redirect to 3T and has been restored to a redirect by both Taking Out The Trash and Onel5969. A glance at the former when it was an article doesn't suggest to me that it shows that Taryll Jackson is notable (as understood here). If you'd like to persuade editors that Jackson merits an article, the best place to do this would I think be Talk:3T. Clarify "supporter." Is "JXNLegacy" an organization, or just your personal choice for a User name. onel5969 suggested that because of a suspected personal or paid connection to the Jackson family, you should declare any such connection on your User page and then use WP:YFA to create a draft. Of the three brothers that make up 3T, Taj merits an article, you have been attempting to do same for Taryll, and I suppose that leaves TJ neglected. Given Taryll having a solo career, a split may be warranted. However, as noted above, Hoary was able to look at the article version of Taryll Jackson and doubted it was Wikipedia-notable. One alternative for you to consider is improving the Taryll Jackson's solo career in 3T. Right now, it is a list of song releases. None of that establishes notability. As for your question, it most likely is not notable enough for an article given that it only has 3 locations so it's most likely just a local store. I recently reverted an edit where someone was removing a brief mention of two teachers who had been arrested from a school districts article for privacy concerns. Hello, TheManInTheBlackHat. I guess this is related to Somerville Independent School District. In my view, it is not appropriate to mention arrests of teachers that took place five to six years ago, when no evidence of convictions has been provided. According to WP:BLPCRIME, which is part of a mandatory and non-negotiable policy, A living person accused of a crime is presumed innocent until convicted by a court of law. Accusations, investigations and arrests do not amount to a conviction. For individuals who are not public figures; that is, individuals not covered by Public figures, editors must seriously consider not including material—in any article—that suggests the person has committed, or is accused of having committed, a crime, unless a conviction has been secured. Before you submit it, you need to clean it up. Remove the bold song titles. Song titles in Wikipedia are written in plain text and with quotes like this: "Song Title". Album titles are written in italics like this Album Title. It looks like there is no way at Commons (using Vector 2010, which is apparently the default there) to see the "tools" menu, which has "Nominate for Deletion", unless you are in desktop mode. (I'm always in desktop mode at en:wp, since I have the handy script thingy. But it doesn't work at WM.) I'll try to report the missing "tools" menu somewhere at Commons... unless I missed something obvious.

If an article about him is published on Wikipedia that article won't belong to him, and anyone who can find reliable references on him can add to it, even if those changes contain information the professor might prefer not to be in the article. Wikipedia is not social media, so obtaining an "entry" is much more difficult than just telling an employee to add something to the online encyclopedia. Procedure with tagging a recently blocked account as part of long term abuse?

Hey Wikipedians; recently, while scrolling through the revision history of Hurricane Ian, I found reverted edits performed by the now-indefinitely blocked User:Josh Poore (contribs). Upon further inspection, I also found a case of long-term abuse involving CalebHughes involving many of the same kinds of edits, as the LTA case's description of Hughes' normal edits and the user's edit history highly mirror each other. When proceeding to open up an SPI, I received a few warnings on duplicated pages, and I didn't want to proceed further, electing to seek assistance here instead. In this case, the best thing to do would be to jsut leave it alone and if TPA, EMD, etc. needs to be done then let an admin know about it (preferably in a way that won't induce the streisand effect per WP:DENY). @Carver1889: I would say A7 is correct since it says "This applies to any article...that does not indicate why its subject is important or significant". They just seem to be your average HVAC retailer. Need help with my submission

Is this an appropriate article to create?

I am interested in creating an article about the subset of Taylor Swift fans (Gaylors) who believe Taylor Swift is queer. There are independent articles from well known publications on the topic that could be used for citation, and I believe there is more than enough information on the topic for it to have it's own article, however I am wondering if the reason it hasn't been created yet is because it is against the conventions of Wikipedia in some way. "Indian" vs. "Native American" vs. "Indigenous", etc.

Hi there!

In recent times, there has been a lot of discourse about how to refer to people who were or come from a lineage of the first inhabitants of the Americas. The use of "Indian" has been waning in favor of "Native American" or "Indigenous people/person," so I'm wondering if Wikipedia has set any ground rules on this. For example, I recently came across an article that almost exclusively uses "Indian," and I'm not sure whether I should be editing those instances.

Any guidance is much appreciated.

Hello, Nardster. When writing about the Indigenous peoples of what is now the United States, the coverage in Native Americans in the United States#Terminology differences may be useful. In Canada, such peoples are commonly called First Nations, but Inuit people in Alaska, Canada and Greenland are usually classified differently. Other terminology is used in Spanish and Portuguese speaking areas of the Americas. The bottom line is that you need to read the sources specific to the topic, and use the terminology used by the sources. Sometimes this will mean introducing and explaining several terms, in context. I am looking to patrol recent changes, and I am not finding it to update for me. Could it just be my internet connection? I have the following filter saved: Very likely have problems, very likely bad faith, Unregistered, Newcomers, Human (not bot), Page edits, Page creations, Logged actions, and New users.

DusFisher, perhaps you're asking about Draft:Yue Song. This has various problems, but the most important one is lack of evidence of notability. The draft currently has three sources. Two of them have no text (and the draft gives one of these two a wrong title). The third is IMDb, which is unusable for most purposes. So the draft currently has no substantive, reliable sources. It needs to show (and of course to use) three. Where are these three? You can:

• read the essay at Wikipedia:Writing Wikipedia articles backward (which is what you have tried to do);
• blank all of your current Draft's text (it will still be available through the Draft's 'View history' tab if you need to refer to it or re-use any of it;
• find three or more published, independent, Reliable sources that discuss your subject at some length;
• Write new text based solely on what is in those sources, and cite them. This will create an acceptable "core" for the article, which you can expand on.

If you cannot find three such sources, then there is almost no hope of demonstrating the subject's Notability and the Draft will not be accepted as an Article: perhaps in the future more will be published about the subject (see WP:Too soon), and you (or others) can try again. When a celebrity dies - How is their page edited so fast?

whenever there is a celebrity death, the moment it is announced I go to Wikipedia and someone has already changed their profile to say "was" and edited the article to be in the past tense.

MrBauer24, it is a well known fact going back hundreds of years that mass media interest surges after the death of a celebrity. Since Wikipedia is the encyclopedia that anyone can edit and there are many many millions of people constantly monitorig the internet news and social media ecosystem, it is not surprising that there would be countless people rushing to edit Wikipedia when a celebrity dies. Deaditor redirects to Death and Wikipedia, which starts Death and Wikipedia includes all discussions of how Wikipedia editors present death of public figures. Which is one of the more leaden of the opening sentences I've encountered. Incidentally, in the second sentence the article appears to change its mind: Wikipedia editors, plural, don't attend to this solemn task; the "Wikipedia community", singular, does. Removed Article Submitted for Review - Draft Name

Hello, I wrote an article which was published to Wikipedia and it was removed due to lack of resources. I have since fixed the article and submitted it for review, but wondered if I needed to recreate the article and publish again instead. You say you have submitted it for review, but you haven't. I can do that for you, if you'd like.

That being said, the draft would only be declined, as it is almost entirely unreferenced (which is especially a problem in articles on living people), and there is no evidence that the subject is notable in Wikipedia terms. @Manywords4u: What is needed is to demonstrate that this person is "notable" in Wikipedia’s meaning of the term. That requires references that are (1) independent of him, (2) reliable, and (3) deal with him in-depth. We do not need many references, but we need high-quality ones.

Of your three references, two are related to institutes/foundations that he is involved in, and the last is a journal piece they wrote. All of those fail part (1).

I'm surprised that you've linked each to a retailer, and I'm also surprised that Wikipedia hasn't yet put amzn.eu on its blacklist (for being a redirecting service). Other problems: Why is "Education" treated at more length than is any other section, and where are the sources for it? Draft:Hygord Amédée has two paragraphs about his education. Where did you get this information? It there a publication to cite? Information about a living person may be true, but unless it can be verified by citing a reliable source reference it cannot be in the article. Same for career information. If your source is from speaking with or corresponding with Hygord Amédée, that cannot be used. What people say or write about themselves is not a reliable source. That includes published interviews. Help (im)proving "notability" of articles

I've submitted 2 draft articles (Draft:The Foundation for Research on Information Technologies in Society, Draft:Schmid & Partner Engineering AG, originally published, then selected for deletion, then "drafitified").

The IT'IS article was declined for not having references clearly traceable to the main text for the purpose of meeting notability per WP:GNG, for having too many references, for having too many external links...

The references I cite include many peer-reviewed papers published in respected scientific journals. Are these discounted because some of the co-authors performed research in IT'IS laboratories?

The SPEAG article was moved to draft status; I submitted it for review today.

Full discolosure: I was employed by the IT'IS Foundation as a science writer from 2012 until my retirement in 2019; since then, I have continued to work for IT'IS as an editor on an hourly basis. In early 2015, I recommended to the foundation's director, Niels Kuster, to contribute articles to Wikipedia, but early drafts were shelved until recently.

I do not view my drafts as attempts at self-promotion -- both IT'IS and SPEAG have mechanisms in-house for this purpose, presentations at conferences and peer-reviewed scientific articles for IT'IS and a sales office for SPEAG. I honestly believe that the information in the articles is globally important and potentially of interest to many consulters of wilipedia.

I am consulting a US-based expert on telecommunications, the former corporate VP of MOTOROLA, on both of these drafts. He would like to draft an article on the history of portable device SAR testing in support of the 2 existing drafts, but there is a catch: he and Niels Kuster were main drivers in the develpment of precision instruments for wireless device testing and he fears that his contributions will be labeled as biased.

I will be drafting more articles about another partner organization -- Zurich MedTech (with a focus on MRI safety issues) -- and background information about wireless testing and exposure studies.

@PLBounds: Starting with three rather minor points:

1. Please avoid using section-break lines on talk pages, it makes it harder to scan the page. I have replaced them by a somewhat-similar graphical element (I considered removing them entirely but arguably that would have denaturated your post).
2. You fall under our definition of paid editor. The sentences you put on your userpage are adequate to disclose your relationship; I would encourage you to use the standard template {{paid}} (but that is not mandatory).
3. Whether you view your drafts as attempts at self-promotion, or whether others view it thusly, is irrelevant. What matters is if they verify Wikipedia's policies.

Now, onto the substantive points.

The first (and most important) thing to check is whether the subjects of the article verify Wikipedia’s definition of notability. This is a property of the subjects, not of the (draft) articles. If such sources do not exist, stop any work on the drafts, because such work will be wasted: no amount of editing can overcome a lack of notability.

To show a company is notable, you need to find multiple sources that are simultaneously (1) independent of the subject, (2) reliable, and (3) describe the subject at length. Anything written by the company, its founders, employees etc. is ruled out by (1); this includes interviews as well. Scientific articles written by unrelated people will usually meet (1) and (2), but are at risk of failing (3). A single sentence along the lines of "we used company X's foobar to cromulate the thing" does not describe company X or its products at length; on the other hand, a full-review article comparing company X's foobars with company Y's foobars might qualify.

The second thing is to make sure the drafts are written from a neutral point of view. (This is less important than notability, because it can always be fixed from within Wikipedia.) Wikipedia articles aim to provide a "facts-only" outlook on a subject ("dry and boring", one might say, although it is certainly possible to write less-boring articles while respecting the guidelines).

Consider for instance the following from your draft:

• with the mission to develop novel scientific methods. Unless it is a military squad, it does not have a "mission" - it has "goals", "aims", etc. Also, "novel - Are there many research institutes that have the mission to develop old scientific methods?
• Compare the draft’s wording of The research activities of the IT'IS Foundation are centered around computational life sciences to expand the scientific basis for safe and beneficial applications of EM energy in wireless information technologies, as well as to apply computational physics to advance the expansion of precision medicine. with the IT'IS Foundation uses methods from computational life sciences and computational physics to study the safety of wireless transmission and precision medicine. My quick and dirty rewording does lose a warm and fuzzy feeling of nice-people-doing-nice-things, but does it lose information?
• is heavily involved in - would you write that another institute is lightly involved in? Reversing the meaning of the sentences often allows to identify much peacocky wording (i.e. positively-loaded turns of phrase that contain no significant information)
• The IT'IS Foundation has participated in a variety of research consortiums Well, duh. It’s a research institute. That’s what they do. If you’re not going to tell us which right away, you might as well drop the sentence.

I haven’t looked very deep at the rest but I strongly suspect the paragraph "The REFLEX project controversy" is not using the best available sources, and as a result, is giving a rather slanted presentation. In particular, the about page of "Microwave News" is full of red flags to me (neither Science nor Nature feel the need to say their editor is a PhD, nor do they show reviews by the popular press). Once notability has been established via such sources, other, less independent sources can be used to add or verify information (though Wikipedia prefers unaffiliated sources).

Again: a) Since Thakur is not notable at this point, you will only be wasting your own time if you try to create an article about him. b) No reliable, independent sourcing has supported the claim that Thakur is a "parallel lead" in the TV series. As you know, the source you added is neither reliable nor independent, and it doesn't make that claim in any case. Hello and welcome to the Teahouse. Articles rarely have specific authors; articles are worked on by the community. Instead of using Wikipedia itself as a source, it would be better to use the sources of the information displayed in the Wikipedia article.

@Dyke Hendrickson: Yes, you can. The only condition is to cite both the fact it comes from Wikipedia, and the license it is available under. You could for instance have a notice at the end of the book that chapter 7 uses material from the Wikipedia article XXX, which is released under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share-Alike License 3.0. If it is an online book, you are supposed to link the Wikipedia article.

Whether you should is of course up to you and your editor - you would do well to verify that any substantive claims taken from the Wikipedia article are correct before reprinting them uncritically. Ideally, that claim would give a specific source that you could check, but many Wikipedia articles fall short of that ideal. The first three results I see when looking it up is their own website, an Instagram page, and a YouTube video. The fourth, Ko-Fi looks independent but questionable. You need to get it into standard format, with headers, and (most particularly) inline references - see Referencing for beginners.

Once you do submit it, note that there is no process or progress. It will sit in the pile for review until a volunteer reviewer chooses to pick it up and review it. SquarePeg89, you might have also read that if someone is involved with an organization, then we advise them not to write about the organization. This is considered to be a conflict of interest. How do I edit the capitalization in a draft title line after I have started the draft page?

I made a page. It is in draft from. I need to edit the capitalization of the title name in the draft, but when I click "edit" I am allowed to edit all of the page except the title line. Do I have to start over with a new title and new capitalization, or can I somehow change the capitalization in my existing draft without having to start all over again? Hello, and welcome to the Teahouse. The name of a page is not part of the page, but tells the software where to find it, so you change it by moving the page. I wouldn't worry too much about the name of Draft:Chu Tat-Shing, because when a reviewer accepts the draft they will move it to article space, and correct the name if necessary. Early life vs. career

I am not sure when, in a biographical article, to move from early life to career, given that the individual I am writing about (the singer Emei) started performing in a professional context as young as 15. Would these pre-adulthood professional endeavors be considered career or early life? I apologize if this question is to specific for here.

@Harjex10, the short answer is that you did get that you need top media pages right, but that's not exactly the definition of independent sources.

• Reliable sources mean ones from top media pages/news organizations (think Reuters, Ars Technica, Rolling Stone etc). blogs or youtube are not counted, as well as any social media site including YouTube (unless it already comes from a news organization that by itself counts as one).
• Independent sources mean ones that are not affiliated by any way to the subject orher than covering the subject. that means no press conferences, interviews, sponsored articles, or the subject's very own website.

Patrolling is done by volunteers who do what they can when they can; I know of no systemic reason why articles in certain topic areas would take longer to be patrolled. Patrollers choose what they patrol, it could be that a particlar topic area might seem controversial and as such they are more reluctant to patrol it. This is not entirely true, because almost everyone knows that they don't own articles. People don't demand ownership, but respect. This is the way in the academic world. And that's why real names are used in high-level texts with gentlemen and ladies. I don't want to imitate social media where people many times attack behind a pseudonym. I usually use my real name. But this time I used ip to learn how Wikipedia respects ip-users.

Help adding conflict of interest notification to my user page.

I built a page for Chu Tat-Shing and added a conflict of interest notice on my user page LaoHu777. Then the page was moved and the title updated to Chu Tat-shing, to conform with grammar standards for names like this. Now my conflict of interest notice does not link to the newly titled page and I want to add another conflict of interest notice that links to the new page. How do I do this? Norms1107 accout blocked

I have been having problems with my account being blocked. A student at our Career Technology Center (High School) has taken on this project. I do not know her. She was working on the account trying to answer some of the notability questions when all this happened. I created the above account for her to use and apparently that was not a good idea. I then suggested that she create her own account, which she did. My knowledge of Wikipedia is somewhere near zero and apparently she ran into some problems as well, but is better equipped to deal with them until the accounts were blocked. I would gladly delete my account if I knew how. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. User:Norms1107 created an unreferenced article about himself (Norm Schrein) that was Speedy Deleted, then went on to create the article again. It was cleaned up by others and moved to Draft:Norm Schrein. There, account User:Sydni62095 restored Norm's version, word-for-word (still unreferenced). Whether either the mysterious high school student or Norm using a second account, both now Indefinitely blocked. My advice: A cursory search found no evidence that Norm meets Wikipedia's criteria for notability. Abandon working on the draft (meh, you are blocked, anyway); in six months it will be deleted as an inactive draft. Don't bother appealing the blocks on the two accounts, as it appears that your only motivation to being a Wikipedia editor was to create an article about yourself. A search on Tropical Storm Bopha (2006) redirects to 2006 Pacific typhoon season#Severe Tropical Storm Bopha (Inday), where Bopha is one of many described storms. Hi, I'm asking this question because on the Wikipedia article for Bagel Bites, there's a part about them being pulled from Canadian shelves in 2022, but it says "citation needed". Hi, @Interstellarity:! I'm a new editor, but for what it's worth, I much prefer mobile view editing over the iOS app, but they have specific strengths and weaknesses. Quick citations, for example, are much easier with the Visual Editor citation tool, but last time I checked, the app just created empty ref tags that would then require parameters to be filled in manually. This is just one example inconsistency between mobile view vs. app. I jotted down some quick notes in my sandbox here, which may be somewhat out of date. (Talk pages for mobile view has been greatly improved recently for example.) You may be interested in seeking out @Clovermoss:, who recently wrote a Signpost article on the app front. I believe they are working with the development team on the app, whereas I'm honestly not sure what work (if any) is being done for mobile view editing. Don't know if I can be of much further help, given my lack of experience and the rather limited range of my edits (I'm almost entirely a copyeditor, on purpose.) I, like Cullen328, will also use the desktop site while editing on my phone. Both the app and the mobile browser site, IMHO, are hobbled versions of the desktop site, which is far more functional. I feel like the mobile site and the app are 1) optimized for readers over editors and 2) designed for an earlier generation of smartphones, before their functionality matched that of full desktop/laptop computers. I'm sure everyone has their own preferences, and mine are partially influenced by being a bit of an old-timer around here (been an active editor since 2005, had an account since 2006, and an admin since 2008) so some of it is being "set in my ways", but even when using my phone, I find I am still most comfortable editing the same way I do on a full sized computer. --Jayron32 17:37, 30 March 2023 (UTC)

Thanks for the ping, LumonRedacts! Interstellarity, I've gotten used to the app over time. I think it can be useful to get notifications about Wikipedia on the go (or in the certain situations stressful) and reading my watchlist to keep up with other changes is nice. Mobile view has way more features compared to the actual app and there's many differences that I can discuss if you're interested. If you do plan on trying the app, a key difference is whether you're using iOS or android. I use the latter and while it lacks some functionality, iOS lacks even more. In the article History of Wikipedia we find that Gnupedia had the same goals: "GNUpedia were nearly identical to Wikipedia: anyone can contribute, small contributions are welcome, plan on taking years, a narrow focus on encyclopedic content as the primary goal, anyone can read articles, anyone can mirror articles" and "Assuming attribution for articles (rather than anonymous by default), requiring attribution for quotations". The main idea was to allow people to write about sensitive things like Tiananmen Square without fear, but only a few articles are so sensitive. And you can then use IP address. But there is no mention of a lack of references.

Perhaps some people like to destroy history like in Tiananmen 1989, so one person deleted earlier part of this important discussion from Wikipedia. It first started having Notes and references in 2006. It reached >100 references in July 2010. It is currently at 482 refs. Clearly, in early years, references were not a requirement, and many articles dating that far back have been changed over time to comply with current standards. He then graduated with a B.E.E degree in 1952 from Cooper Union, where he was awarded the calculus medal and received honorable mention in the 1952 William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition." Where did you get that information from? Was if from a website? What website? Was it from a book? What book was it from? What page in that book can I find it? See, everything in Wikipedia needs to be verifiable, which means that someone else can follow up and find the source of the information; where it comes from. Everything written in Wikipedia should have been written about first in reliable sources, and we cite our sources for every bit of information. The most convenient way for readers to connect all of your information to the specific source it comes from is through footnotes; see Help:Footnotes for how to add those to your article. adding a note

I'm trying to add one of those notes that look like citations, but say "a" instead of a number. I am writing a page on the Islamic Armed Movement and there are 4 different dates for the same event from different sources so i'll just write night of August 26-27 as that is the most likely date. Is there a speedy delete criterion that can be cited for when an editor creates an article that was previously deleted only a few days prior based on an AfD? Hi @Cavero Official, welcome to the Teahouse. The very first problem here may be your username, since you seem to have used the name of your brand to create a role account, rather than one which reflects you as an individual. I'd recommend either abandoning this account and creating one with a different name, or requesting a change of username (instructions are here).

Next, you should read WP:PAID to see the disclosures you will need to make, and make them.

You should then start on the task of carefully reading WP:Your first article. You will need to demonstrate that your company is notable by Wikipedia's standards. This is done by finding several reliable, independent, published, secondary sources which talk about the company in some detail (see WP:42). You would then summarize what those sources say about your company, citing the sources themselves as you go (see WP:Referencing for beginners).

Wikipedia is not interested in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is only interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. If you cannot find such sources, it's best to just stop now. Also, be aware from the outset that statements like so remarkable and has never been done and explain the deep meaning of all are not very encyclopedic language. Last, if against all odds you do have an article accepted, afterwards, other people can edit and you cannot. Hi, Bchanda. There is no point in changing the name of Draft:Rai Bahadur Ramaprasad Chanda, because it is never going to be accepted as an article since there is already an article on the subject.

There may well be a point in developing parts of your draft into acceptable Wikipedia text (formatting headers, for example, and using inline citations - see WP:REFB). Then when you have done that, you can copy sections from your draft into the article. ColinFine (talk) 21:11, 30 March 2023 (UTC)

Issue with saving

Hello everyone. I have an issue with saving my edits. I proceed as usual, but after pressing "publish changes" nothing is happening. The window just stays where it is, it gives me the progress bar and that's it. I can't abandon neither. I did not change any settings and I did restart my computer. I also tried to use another computer but there I've got the same issue. Have I been blocked from editing? However, I havn't received any message letting me know about it. Any ideas? Thanks! Was Kisevalter Nash?: here's one way. On your user page (or somewhere else that it won't do any harm) create a link to the draft that you want to create, like this Draft:Xyzabc. Then click on that link. That'll take you to a page titled "Creating Draft:Xyzabc". Type something in the larfge edit box, and click "Publish page". You've created a draft. Trying to find vandalism quickly is not always a useful pursuit. All vandalism goes through recent changes, so you may need to fine tune what you're looking at. You may want to install WP:POPUPS to speed up what you're doing. New users are a frequent source; check out any blue links at Special:Log/newusers. You can also try Special:AbuseLog. There's a few extra tools listed at Wikipedia:Cleaning_up_vandalism/Tools. I'm not vouching for any of them as I don't use them. Uploading images

Hi, I am an experienced Wikipedian, but I don't know much about images and licensing. Am I allowed to upload the image from https://www.statista.com/chart/16959/share-of-the-internet-that-is-porn/ ? @Tgeorgescu no in short, because of the ND part which means No Derivatives, but all Wiki content expressly allows remixing. The only way you could upload an image to English Wikipedia where it wouldn't be allowed in Commons is if WP:FAIRUSE applied, but that doesn't here. Wiki page picture for author

I would like to update the picture of an Author on their Wiki Page.

The picture notes the copyright symbol and photographer's name.

@LisaPSinger: Only if you own the copyright or if the person who owns the copyright will donate it to Wikipedia. In that case you or them have to fill a nasty form for the Volunteer Response Team. I'd rephrase that as "You can upload it to Wikimedia Commons only if either (A) you own the copyright or (B) the person who owns the copyright will either (i) copyleft it in a way that's acceptable to Wikimedia Commons or (ii) will waive all their rights to it, donating it to the public domain. Citing sources from Wikipedia Library

When providing an inline source obtained via Wikipedia Library I'm not sure whether to provide the URL, so have just been stating via, for example - Gale OneFile and not providing a URL link.

Take this citation URL as an example. link.gale.com/apps/doc/A698855619/STND?u=wikipedia&sid=bookmark-STND&xid=33d78588

Should I:

a) include the URL as is?

b) amend part of the URL? If so, what.

c) include the link but don't change anything and let users who run Citation Bot make any necessary adjustment?

d) don't include the link at all?

Also, should I be acknowledging Wikipedia Library in the 'via' field along with Gale? Rupples (talk) 00:17, 31 March 2023 (UTC)

@Rupples Welcome to Teahouse! I would amend the url to be as simple and as succinct possible. Usually the ISSN, DOI and other core identifiers are the most important aspects. How to create subpage

I want to create a subpage from my user page, but, quite simply, how do I do it? Is there some sort of form I need to fill out or something? Something to do with the sandbox? Please help.

How do I find the draft I was still working on?

The best way is to log into your account (if you have one) and look at your contribution history. Otherwise, you need to remember what title you used. The title would be of the form "Draft:Title of draft". ~Anachronist (talk) 04:29, 31 March 2023 (UTC)
