Help renaming a draft[edit]

I just did my first page, but I messed up the name. It's called Draft:Initial. How do I fix it? Ai-ml-enthusiast (talk) 23:26, 24 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello, @Ai-ml-enthusiast, and Welcome to the Teahouse. The only way to fix it is by moving the page, but you don’t have the permissions to do so. I can move the draft for you. What do you want the new title to be? - 🔥𝑰𝒍𝒍𝒖𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝑭𝒍𝒂𝒎𝒆 (𝒕𝒂𝒍𝒌)🔥 23:58, 24 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I have moved the page to Draft:Signifyd. If this is the wrong title let me know, and I can move it somewhere else. Welcome to Wikipedia! - 🔥𝑰𝒍𝒍𝒖𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝑭𝒍𝒂𝒎𝒆 (𝒕𝒂𝒍𝒌)🔥 00:05, 25 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Perfect! Thanks so much! Ai-ml-enthusiast (talk) 05:20, 25 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Ai-ml-enthusiast Your draft would be much better if the citations used the {{cite web}} template: see that link and WP:REFB. The current use of "retrieved from..." is not how we usually do things and makes the URL visible as a distraction to readers. Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:00, 25 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Converted! Thanks for the tip! Ai-ml-enthusiast (talk) 01:19, 26 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Ai-ml-enthusiast The draft looks much better but will, I think, fail to be accepted if/when you submit it to WP:AfC. The problem is that you haven't (in my opinion) got over the hurdle of showing that the company is notable as defined by Wikipedia. Most of the content is WP:RUNOFTHEMILL stuff that all companies do. The more promising parts, where you say they have won awards (e.g. refs #13, #14), lead to sponsored awards of dubious value that seem to be given out to a large number of entities. Mike Turnbull (talk) 11:52, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Gotcha. I was trying to do a total profiling of the Chargeback_insurance space because the companies operating in it were early adopters of AI/ML in their business. This was the only player that didn't already have a page; the others being Riskified, Forter, and ClearSale. You're right about the "best places to work" awards. I'll cut that. I think the fast company one is more exclusive. There's also the Four-day workweek element which I thought was interesting. Ai-ml-enthusiast (talk) 14:57, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Copyright Image [?][edit]

I am asking because supposedly AI-Generated images have no copyright infringement, I uploaded https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/28/Cat_on_Skateboard_AI.png is this okay? 多多123 () 15:42, 25 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@多多123 Actually, I don't think so. Per [1] you made this with something called https://www.bing.com/create (I get to see a Swedish-language version). That page has a link to terms of agreement (again, Swedish for me), which states that you can use the creations outside their online services, for personal, non-commercial purposes. "Non-commercial" kills it, Commons-wise, and perhaps "personal" kills it even more. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 16:01, 25 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Swedish newspaper source access[edit]

I would like to access some Swedish language newspapers to expand and improve an article. The Ängelholm UFO memorial has several reliable sources that are behind paywalls or partial paywalls where only the introduction is visible. I'm familiar with Wikipedia access to newspapers.com and the Wikipedia library, but these Swedish newspapers do not appear to be included. I attempted to sign up for a trial month using machine translation, but this appears to be available only to residents of Sweden. The specific source links are:

Any guidance is appreciated, Rjjiii (talk) 05:23, 26 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Rjjiii, welcome to the Teahouse. Like you said, the hd is paywall, and the kb says "Copyright protected material, can only be read digitally at the Royal Library and at a few other libraries." You can try WP:RX or asking at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Sweden. @Bonadea, perhaps you know something helpful? Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 07:52, 26 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Copying between projects[edit]

Hi, can I create an article by copying all the information from another Wikipedia that has the page, then translating it to English ? I'm wondering if it's possible to copy/transfer the whole article to the English Wikipedia. Dancing Dollar (let's talk) 15:16, 26 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Dancing Dollar: Welcome to the Teahouse! The answer is yes - see WP:Translation. However, the translated article still needs to meet the English Wikipedia's criteria for notability. Hope this helps, and happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 15:53, 26 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Dancing Dollar:, indeed it is possible. Please make sure you observe the Wikimedia's wmf:Terms of use, which require translation attribution along with a link to the foreign Wikipedia article you translated from to be placed into the edit summary of the edit where you added the translated content. See WP:TFOLWP for how to word this. Mathglot (talk) 08:41, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Your draft is very, very poor English. It will not be accepted. Compare how information about this storm is conveyed in complete sentences as a section at 2006 Pacific typhoon season versus everything you have written. Also, please consider if an effort to create an article about a storm that occurred 17 years ago is a good use of your time. David notMD (talk) 11:33, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I added the link you provided in a new External links section using {{cite conference}}. Feel free to move it to the appropriate place within the draft. I tried correcting your English, but there are many sentences I don't understand. GoingBatty (talk) 13:04, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The draft has not been resubmitted for review, so it's not currently being considered. I agree that the level of English prose is poor, and the draft won't be accepted unless a volunteer editor does some extensive copyediting and rewording. Some sections like "Aug 7's in the 2006 before 100 km/h (60 mph) Bopha's 2006 Pacific typhoon season and removed on Aug 8. but Luzon. by Bopha and Aug 10 Floods more homes are removed. in Aug and 3 typhoon's as images the storm end Aug 10." are pretty much indecipherable. You might have more success contributing articles in your native language, which, I'm guessing, is not English. Hope this helps. David10244 (talk) 08:36, 28 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I histmerged the two drafts and left a link on the talk page to the last best of the other draft. That may help with some of the indecipherable English. - UtherSRG (talk) 13:32, 28 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Uploading Image of a living person.[edit]

Hi

I found an article about a living person that can use his image for better understanding and originality. The person has provided his image for public display on his own private website. Can i source his image from there and use it on wikipedia article?

Do i need a written permission from him for doing so? Jatin1219 (talk) 05:55, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello, Jatin1219. You must assume that any photo you find on the internet is restricted by copyright laws, unless you find solid evidence to the contrary. Any photo of a living person must be either freely licensed or in the public domain to be used on Wikipediah. Anything you find on Wikimedia Commons is OK to use. Photos taken by employees of the U.S. federal government while performing their job duties are in the public domain. A small percentage of photos on Flickr are freely licenced. The vast majority of other photos of living people are copyright restricted and cannot be used on Wikipedia. Cullen328 (talk) 06:21, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Also be aware that, in most cases, the photographer holds the copyright, not the subject of a portrait, unless there is a written legal agreement reassigning the copyright for money. People are rarely willing to give away for free rights that they paid money for. Cullen328 (talk) 06:24, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks for reply
I found pictures available on wikimedia either sourced from random website (example this pic is sourced from this random website) or even from youtube thumbnails(example ). The secound example says that picture available on youtube thumbnails are in common licence. Is it true?
If not then how did they survives without legal agreement? Jatin1219 (talk) 07:30, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Jatin1219 On your first example, scroll down and read under "Licensing". The uploader has proved, via mailcontact, that the image is ok. There is a system for this in place, because sometimes copyrightholders think that "donating" pics is a good idea. In the YT case, check where it says "License" above the comments[5]. Uploaders on YT can publish their stuff under such licenses if they want. Not that Commons (or WP) is error free [6][7], but these examples seem fine. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:30, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
So I can not upload the picture of a living person on wikipedia or wikimedia without contacting him personally even if his page is on wikipedia and pictures are available online? Jatin1219 (talk) 09:16, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
As was mentioned above. The subject of the photo is not the important person. The owner of the copyright of the photo is the most important person. - X201 (talk) 09:41, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Your options: A) contact the photographer and convince that person to create a Wikipedia account and donate the photograph to Commons for free use everywhere; B) contact the subject of the Wikipedia article and convince that person to take a selfie, create an account and submit the photo; C) stalk the celebrity to take your own photo. Best of luck. David notMD (talk) 11:28, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thanks. I will opt for option 3 :) Jatin1219 (talk) 11:32, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
3 people with WP-articles in one picture, score!
Conventions are good for stalking. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 11:34, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
What is the procedure of secound option. If i can convince the subject to click a selfie then what steps he need to do to upload his picture on commons? Jatin1219 (talk) 12:43, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Jatin1219, point them to [8]. I have on occasion successfully asked a subject or WP:COI-person who turned up at WP themselves to provide a pic, but never initiated an off-WP contact myself. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 18:08, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

When my new article be available on Google search[edit]

Which article are you asking about? We may be able to answer the question then. Regards, Ariconte (talk) 06:22, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Please read Wikipedia:Controlling search engine indexing. New articles are not indexed for search engines unless the page has either been reviewed by the Wikipedia:New pages patrol, or 90 days has gone by, whichever comes first. This is a basic quality control measure to prevent complete junk on Wikipedia showing up in Google or Bing searches. Cullen328 (talk) 06:34, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
How did you "create" the article? Was it a draft that you submitted for review, and it was accepted, or did you create an article directly in mainspace? (I forget if IP users can even do this. The IP address has no other contributions.) David10244 (talk) 08:28, 28 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Definition of Alumnus?[edit]

Hello and good morning. Q: What is the accepted definition of "alumnus" here on Wikipedia? Merriam-Webster gives us: 1) a person who has attended or has graduated from a particular school, college, or university; 2) a person who is a former member, employee, contributor, or inmate. Do these correspond with WP:MOS and/or house style? (I'm specifically interested in knowing whether a person's attendance at a particular educational institution is sufficient to state that they are an alumnus/alumna.) Cheers, Cl3phact0 (talk) 07:10, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Yes, the definition seems to be perfectly clear, but please also see WP:ALUMNI. Shantavira|feed me 08:08, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you. This is what I was looking for: "... regardless of how much time they have spent on a school roll, from one day to several years, and whether or not they graduated." All clear. -- Cl3phact0 (talk) 11:06, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Cl3phact0, WP:ALUMNI is part of Wikipedia:WikiProject Schools/Article advice, which isn't obviously about tertiary education. And the notion that somebody who's spent just a single day "on a school roll" thereby becomes an alumnus of the place is (for me) risible; it sounds like the kind of nonsense that's trotted out by a politician caught for having faked their CV. Wiktionary (of course not the only authority, if an authority at all) says of alumnus: "A male pupil or student. / A male graduate. / A student of any gender. / A graduate of any gender." This doesn't even cover people who went to a school for years but for one reason or another didn't graduate from it. -- Hoary (talk) 13:03, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you, Hoary. In truth, I would agree with you that mere matriculation and a casual stroll across the quad does not an alumnus make. In fact, I was a bit surprised by the definition (both Webster's and the above mentioned WP source). I had it in my mind that the term referred to a graduate of an institution. That said, I did doubt myself enough to look it up in the dictionary – and who am I to contradict either of the above sources, after all? This is the article and section that prompted my question, and in particular, whether (based on the parenthetical clause) the Iain Duncan Smith article should be included in Category:Università per Stranieri di Perugia alumni (which I created and populated in relation to Marva Griffin article). How would you define alumnus in this case? Cheers, Cl3phact0 (talk) 16:29, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Cl3phact0, later this week I may have an opportunity to look in the OED for graduate. If I can, I'll let you know what it says. In the meantime, the iWeb corpus offers for example this from a University of Birmingham page: "Be an alumnus of the University, which includes any student who has undertaken an undergraduate degree or exchange programme (for no less than one semester) at Birmingham. It also includes current final-year undergraduate students." (That's from this page, which no longer exists; though I'd guess that it lives on c/o the Wayback Machine.) -- Hoary (talk) 22:39, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Cl3phact0, unfortunately the OED isn't helpful. It has three definitions in its entry (revised in September 2022) for alumnus: the first (labelled "obsolete") is of "a pupil or student attending" a school. The third ("2.b", labelled "colloquial") is of people who've been through organizations other than schools. It's the second ("2.a") that's relevant here: "A former pupil or student (typically male) of a particular school, university, etc.; a graduate of a particular seat of learning. The singular alumnus almost always refers to a male, but the plural alumni is often used to refer to graduates of either sex." Which of course just raises the question of what a "pupil" or "student" is. I'll just say that if I were at a university only to study something for a few days, I'd never call myself a student of that university; and after those few days were over, I'd never call myself an alumnus of that university. -- Hoary (talk) 12:35, 30 March 2023 (UTC) slightly tweaked Hoary (talk) 00:52, 31 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I think it's worth mentioning that the definition at the top of this section is a very American one. Here in Australia we only ever speak of someone being an alumnus of a university, or what Americans call a college. ("College" has a very differnt meaning here.) It certainly doesn't inculde schools. The Birmingham example above seems a close match to Australian usage. While Wikipeida can choose to apply whatever defeinition it likes, editors need to be aware that it only makes sense in one part of the world. HiLo48 (talk) 02:16, 28 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
And, Cl3phact0, I'll concede that alumn? can be vacuous. This page tells us: "The Scouting Alumni Association defines alumni as everyone positively and personally impacted by the Boy Scouts of America. That includes former Scouts, family members of Scouts past and present, community leaders and millions of Americans who benefit from Scouting in their communities every day." Yet context is important. The organization hosting the web page I've just quoted wants to get donations, and of course the larger the target group, the more donations they're likely to get. (A matter that's pointed out here -- another page that discusses a definition.) However, neither Wikipedia nor most of its readers would profit from an extraordinarily wide definition of alumnus. More mainstream: "An GRCC/JC alumnus is defined as an individual who has earned 30 credits or more from GRCC/JC" (source); "Alumnus is defined as a person who has obtained a degree, certificate or diploma from the College, or its immediate predecessor, Mitchell College" (source, an earlier version of this). -- Hoary (talk) 08:18, 28 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Cl3phact0 Inmate? I'm a bit surprised by that use, but I accept it. David10244 (talk) 08:23, 28 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@David10244: "Inmate" surprised me too (but I do like "Big-house alumnus" as far as turn of phrase goes).-- Cl3phact0 (talk) 10:12, 28 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Cl3phact0 "Big-house alumnus". Good phrase! David10244 (talk) 03:05, 31 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

citing wikipedia when writing my eBook[edit]

is it legal and legitimate to cite wikipedia when writing my eBook 103.245.219.133 (talk) 07:35, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

hi ip user! it's best not to cite Wikipedia directly for your work. it's instead best to cite (and before citing, check) the source/s attached to ensure that what the article is saying is accurate to what the source is saying. it's probably not acceptable to use Wikipedia directly in most cases when you're working with a publisher. however, if you're citing something about Wikipedia itself, such as articles in the Signpost. there's much more information in Citing Wikipedia regarding this. happy writing! 💜  melecie  talk - 08:03, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Also bear in mind that Wikipedia is in a constant state of flux. What it says one day it might not say the next, so any citation should include a date and time stamp. Shantavira|feed me 08:11, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
You can link/cite a specific version of a WP-article, like so:[9] Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:45, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Full guidance is at WP:REUSE. You would be allowed to include verbatim bits of Wikipedia content provided you acknowledge their source (which you can do for example with a permalink to the version you used) and license your eBook as CC-BY-SA. Mike Turnbull (talk) 11:25, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Michael D. Turnbull I would clarify though, the book itself can have ANY license or even no license. Only the Wikipedia sources text must be attributed. ~ 🦝 Shushugah (he/him • talk) 19:22, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Shushugah: Unless I'm misunderstanding, the "SA" in CC-BY-SA means that the derivative work must be released under the same license as the original work, so wouldn't the book not being licensed under CC-BY-SA be a copyright violation? ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 19:28, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Blaze Wolf If I am wrong, I'll gracefully bow out, but I understood this to explicitly refer only to the actual copied material from Wikipedia, not say the entire book. So for example, if I write a book, and include one paragraph from Wikipedia, I must correctly attribute Wikipedia, and if I slightly rephrase, even that rephrasing must also be Share-Alike per your point, but entire book? I don't believe so. ~ 🦝 Shushugah (he/him • talk) 20:04, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Shushugah, @Blaze Wolf On delving deeper into this, I think that Shushugah is correct based on section 4 of the legal code. This distinguishes "the Work", i.e. the Wikipedia bit, from "the Collection" which is the whole of the eBook incorporating the Work and says this does not require the Collection apart from the Work itself to be made subject to the terms of this License Mike Turnbull (talk) 11:54, 28 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Rules regarding reliable sources about Kickstarter projects[edit]

When the subject of an article has a Kickstarter campaign can the project's Kickstarter page be used as a source of information about the project or is an independent source required? If it can be used does it matter whether the campaign is ongoing or completed and whether it is successful or not? I would appreciate a general answer, but in case it matters: I am considering adding the title and the campaign goal of a film project and the fact that the campaign was successful. Random person no 362478479 (talk) 11:01, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Random person no 362478479 I would treat the Kickstarter page like we treat the subject's own webpage, since it is certainly not WP:INDEPENDENT. Hence the information can be used as in WP:ABOUTSELF but will not contribute to the notability. If you are creating a new article/draft we need about three sources meeting these golden rules. Mike Turnbull (talk) 11:18, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Michael D. Turnbull Thank you. That matches with what I expected. Random person no 362478479 (talk) 14:24, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Michael D. Turnbull Turns out that kickstarter.com is on a spam blacklist. Oh well, the information I wanted to add is not that important and I expect that sooner or later there will be other sources to document it. Random person no 362478479 (talk) 15:55, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thanks for your response, can you please go through it an check if it confirms with all the wikipedia rules? Toniventure (talk) 11:39, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Toniventure The article definitely needs more references, especially in the Career section. I would also recommend some (not insignificant) restructuring and rewriting. Do you mind if I do some editing (I don't want to mess with someone's draft without their explicit permission). Random person no 362478479 (talk) 11:53, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Although five references have been added since this was last declined, there are still chunks of text not supported by any references. There may be time to fix this before the next review..David notMD (talk) 11:50, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Page being removed twice by same user[edit]

Hi there, I've been trying to create a new Wikipedia page. Used references but it has been removed for the second time. I'm not understanding what I'm not doing correctly. And how can I see which user is removing the page and how can I talk to that user directly? This is the page Taryll Jackson JXNLegacy (talk) 12:00, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello. It looks like you have figured out how to contact the user directly. 331dot (talk) 12:21, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yes, I think so. I saw two users so contacted them both. JXNLegacy (talk) 12:40, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
JXNLegacy, Taryll Jackson started as a redirect to 3T and has been restored to a redirect by both Taking Out The Trash and Onel5969. A glance at the former when it was an article doesn't suggest to me that it shows that Taryll Jackson is notable (as understood here). If you'd like to persuade editors that Jackson merits an article, the best place to do this would I think be Talk:3T. Incidentally, your username rather makes me think of "Jackson legacy"; do you perhaps have some relation to Taryll Jackson? -- Hoary (talk) 12:26, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Aside from the username, there are some pretty clear indications this person is related to Taryll in some way. Onel5969 TT me 12:29, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you for the clear answer. I am a supporter of the family but I did not think I was being "promotional". I used references and sources and thought the information was neutral. So other users should create the page? But those are probably also Jackson family supporters right? JXNLegacy (talk) 12:37, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Clarify "supporter." Is "JXNLegacy" an organization, or just your personal choice for a User name. onel5969 suggested that because of a suspected personal or paid connection to the Jackson family, you should declare any such connection on your User page and then use WP:YFA to create a draft. Of the three brothers that make up 3T, Taj merits an article, you have been attempting to do same for Taryll, and I suppose that leaves TJ neglected. Given Taryll having a solo career, a split may be warranted. However, as noted above, Hoary was able to look at the article version of Taryll Jackson and doubted it was Wikipedia-notable. One alternative for you to consider is improving the Taryll Jackson's solo career in 3T. Right now, it is a list of song releases. None of that establishes notability. What is needed is references to what people have written ABOUT Taryll. Improve the section first, and then make a case for a split. David notMD (talk) 12:51, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Personal choice of a user name, maybe not the right one in retrospect? Thank you for the advise David notMD Kind regards, JXNLegacy (talk) 13:03, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
If no paid or personal connection (see WP:COI for what that is about), then declare such on your own Talk page. Still means - per Hoary - that there may not be enough published about Taryll to justify an article. Do look at Taj Jackson as an example of what works. How to make a created template appear[edit]

I just created this - Template:Miss Polonia winners. What code do I use to make it appear in an article?

Thanks KatoKungLee (talk) 18:06, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

to add a template, just put {{}} around the name.
So {{Miss Polonia winners}}, returns

PalauanReich (talk) 18:16, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

PalauanReich - Thanks, that worked.KatoKungLee (talk) 18:21, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@KatoKungLee note I changed the |name = parameter to match the casing of the Template itself. Happy editing! In the future if you have technical/template related questions, WP:Village Pump (Technical) is also a suitable place to ask. ~ 🦝 Shushugah (he/him • talk) 21:57, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

fair use image[edit]

There is an image on the Arabic Wikipedia that is fair use, do I have to reupload it on the English wikipedia or can I use it across wiki. Here is the image PalauanReich (talk) 18:15, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi again @PalauanReich. Only images on Commons are shared across the various versions of Wikipedia. You'll need to upload the image locally to English Wikipedia, with an appropriate non-free rationale per our own non-free content guideline (which may or may not be different from Arabic Wikipedia's rules). 199.208.172.35 (talk) 18:45, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Good to know, thanks PalauanReich (talk) 19:13, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Looking at the image, it's being used on the New Qena article on arWiki, and as we also have the same article here you could theoretically upload it here as well for that use, however I'd suggest expanding the article here first as it's basically a one or two sentence stub which is completely useless to an encyclopedia. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 19:08, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Grocery store - notable for Wikipedia[edit]

Hello, I'm wondering if a family-owned grocery store that has 3 locations is notable enough to have a Wikipedia page. And how would I know if it's notable? Healthylivinggrocery (talk) 19:42, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Healthylivinggrocery: Hello Grocery! If the grocery store you are referring to is your username i suggest you change it as it is currently a violation of the username policy. As for your question, it most likely is not notable enough for an article given that it only has 3 locations so it's most likely just a local store. However if it passes WP:GNG then it is indeed notable. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 19:46, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@EliLG Can you find published sources where others have written about the store, not including interviews with the principals or employees? If so, then you might have enough on which to base an article. David10244 (talk) 08:18, 28 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Distinguished Flying Cross US WWII[edit]

Hello,

My father, William Lewis Tarver, was a recipient of the DFC from both the US and Australia during World War II. I'm sure he would be very grateful if his name was included in the list on the related Wikipedia page. He earned the award for his heroism during the Battle of the Coral Sea. Is it possible to have his name included on the list? If so, what documentation might I provide to confirm his receipt of the reward? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distinguished_Flying_Cross_(United_States) Thank you, Billie (Tarver) Nordmeyer (VisualEditor please.) B1234gn (talk) 00:59, 28 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Good day, B1234gn.
Firstly, if you want to proceed with making or supporting the creation of an article for your father, you want to declare that you have a conflict of interest.
Secondly, are there independent sources that mention him. All the recipients listed have their own articles as far as I can tell. The guidelines for notability can be found here. ✶Mitch199811✶ 02:02, 28 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hello, B1234gn. In order for your father to be listed in Distinguished Flying Cross (United States)#Notable recipients of the DFC, it is necessary that he be the subject of a Wikipedia biography. That is the significance of the word "notable". It seems that the U.S. government awarded over 20,000 DFCs in World War II, and so we cannot list every recipient, but only the notable ones. Cullen328 (talk) 02:17, 28 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@B1234gn Side note on "Visual Editor please". If you are asking other editors to use the Visual Editor when they reply to you, please note that there will be no difference in the actual reply that you see, whether the person replying used one editor or another. You won't even be able to tell. On the other hand, if you are asking that any reply that involves editing instructions should be geared toward the Visual Editor, then your request might make sense. (Personally, I would reword it slightly to say something like "I use the Visual Editor".) I hope this info makes sense; I was a bit wordy. David10244 (talk) 08:15, 28 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

COI editor is directly editing the page, am I addressing this properly?[edit]

Hello! I've been having trouble with a declared COI editor on Behgjet Pacolli's page. I've asked them to submit edit requests via Talk instead of how they've previously edited the page directly. I've posted on WP:COIN twice (here and here) with no response. Is there another avenue I can take this through? Thanks! 30Four (talk) 01:21, 28 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello, 30Four. I have pageblocked that editor from the Behgjet Pacolli biography, although they are still free to make formal edit requests on the article talk page. Cullen328 (talk) 01:58, 28 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Crime and Privacy[edit]

I recently reverted an edit where someone was removing a brief mention of two teachers who had been arrested from a school districts article for privacy concerns. The arrests were both cited with a credible source. Is it valid for the editor to have removed this information? TheManInTheBlackHat (Talk) 02:17, 28 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello, TheManInTheBlackHat. I guess this is related to Somerville Independent School District. In my view, it is not appropriate to mention arrests of teachers that took place five to six years ago, when no evidence of convictions has been provided. According to WP:BLPCRIME, which is part of a mandatory and non-negotiable policy, A living person accused of a crime is presumed innocent until convicted by a court of law. Accusations, investigations and arrests do not amount to a conviction. For individuals who are not public figures; that is, individuals not covered by Public figures, editors must seriously consider not including material—in any article—that suggests the person has committed, or is accused of having committed, a crime, unless a conviction has been secured. I recommend that you follow that policy carefully. Cullen328 (talk) 02:25, 28 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

hi ip user! firstly, please do not canvass others to vote a particular side in an AfD. that aside, while I do not participate in AfD and will not vote either way, I'd like to note that saying that Shree Venkatesh Films is famous is not a reason to not delete an article, it's whether there are reliable sources like news articles that are independent from the subject itself that matters. perhaps there are valid sources (I haven't looked at the sources in the article or what sources are available), but the heavy amount of primary sources used is what drags it down. happy editing! 💜  melecie  talk - 06:23, 28 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

how do i publish or submit an article i have written as a draft?[edit]

I am new to wikipedia an just recently did a draft for a n artist article. I belive it was saved a published. However it is unclear to me how to proceed with getting this article submitted or actually published on wikipedia and seen online.

Below is the link to the draft i created

Draft:CLEMZY (Music Producer)

Please Help! Kennyod (talk) 10:59, 28 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Before you submit it, you need to clean it up. Remove the bold song titles. Song titles in Wikipedia are written in plain text and with quotes like this: "Song Title". Album titles are written in italics like this Album Title. Also (the main issue) you're going to need more reliable sources than the few you have in the article at the moment. - X201 (talk) 11:18, 28 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you. This is helpful Kennyod (talk) 13:52, 28 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Also. read WP:BIO. Wikipedia has notability standards and the subject of the article will need to meet them. - X201 (talk) 11:19, 28 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Kennyod: After reviewing Help:Your first article, ensuring that the artist meets Wikipedia's notability guidelines, and you have addressed the other suggestions here, you can add {{subst:submit}} to the top of your draft to submit it for review. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 13:50, 28 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I actually got the photo off of instagram. Kennyod (talk) 09:31, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Photos from instagram are copyright by the original creator of the photo. You can not use that. - UtherSRG (talk) 15:14, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Okay. what sort of photo can i use Kennyod (talk) 10:54, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Kennyod, you uploaded it as "own work". If it is, in fact, someone else's work, please remove it from the draft and delete it from Commons, since you have likely committed a copyright violation. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 15:21, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
can you tell me how to do that please? Kennyod (talk) 10:19, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I tried to nominate the file for deletion. After clicking on the image, and then clicking "more info", there used to be a link labeled "nominate this file for deletion". I don't see that link in this most recent skin. David10244 (talk) 03:21, 31 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It looks like there is no way at Commons (using Vector 2010, which is apparently the default there) to see the "tools" menu, which has "Nominate for Deletion", unless you are in desktop mode. (I'm always in desktop mode at en:wp, since I have the handy script thingy. But it doesn't work at WM.) I'll try to report the missing "tools" menu somewhere at Commons... unless I missed something obvious.
I have nominated the image for deletion as "not own work". David10244 (talk) 05:17, 31 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

professor dr. Sievers[edit]

Hello, i am the secretary of professor dr. Sievers and he asked me to create a wikipedia entry for him in english. but unfortunately i don't know how to do that. I have entered a contribution but it is not recognized. can you help me with this? Melissa özuzun (talk) 11:57, 28 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

this is the link to the page I created: Draft:Burkhard_Sievers Melissa özuzun (talk) 12:05, 28 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Melissa özuzun, you're asking about Draft:Burkhard Sievers. Well, start by reading and digesting Help:Your first article. Note in particular: "If you or someone or something you are personally involved with is worthy of inclusion in the encyclopedia, let someone else add that article." So the best thing to do is to tell Sievers that no, you're not going to create a Wikipedia article about him. -- Hoary (talk) 12:10, 28 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Good day, Melissa. You must declare a conflict of interest as you personally know the subject and are being asked to make the article. He also needs to pass notability requirements. The article itself looks quite messy and you might want to switch to the visual editor, especially for the citations and headings. You may want to look at WP:REF. ✶Mitch199811✶ 12:10, 28 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
(edit conflict)You have been given hints as to why the draft hasn't been accepted on your talk-page. Also, you must declare your conflict of interest. The draft lacks reliable sources at the moment, amongst other problems like the external links you used. Lectonar (talk) 12:12, 28 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hello Melissa özuzun. You might suggest that Professor Dr. Sievers read Wikipedia:An article about yourself isn't necessarily a good thing. If an article about him is published on Wikipedia that article won't belong to him, and anyone who can find reliable references on him can add to it, even if those changes contain information the professor might prefer not to be in the article. Wikipedia is not social media, so obtaining an "entry" is much more difficult than just telling an employee to add something to the online encyclopedia. Karenthewriter (talk) 13:10, 28 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Melissa özuzun, if I were in your position, I would explain politely to the professor that you have tried, but learned that Wikipedia strongly discourages people from creating articles about their employers and anyone else that they know personally. Maproom (talk) 13:38, 28 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Can i add a photo?[edit]

@Bijou1995: If this is a photo you personally took, you can use the Wikipedia:File Upload Wizard (after ensuring you understand copyright and the image use policy). Then you can discuss the photo at Talk:Meerkat with other interested editors to discuss where (or if) it would be an appropriate addition to the article. Hope this helps, and happy editing! Hello IP user, additionally, WP:tertiary sources (like Wikipedia) are generally discouraged in favor of secondary sourcing, because a tertiary source like Britannica does not specify where it got its information, and while most content there is accurate, if it exists in Britannica, there is usually better sourcing elsewhere. ~ 🦝 Shushugah (he/him • talk) 19:40, 28 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Procedure with tagging a recently blocked account as part of long term abuse?[edit]

Hey Wikipedians; recently, while scrolling through the revision history of Hurricane Ian, I found reverted edits performed by the now-indefinitely blocked User:Josh Poore (contribs). Upon further inspection, I also found a case of long-term abuse involving CalebHughes involving many of the same kinds of edits, as the LTA case's description of Hughes' normal edits and the user's edit history highly mirror each other. When proceeding to open up an SPI, I received a few warnings on duplicated pages, and I didn't want to proceed further, electing to seek assistance here instead. Could y'all help me with what the procedure to tag this account as one of the long-term abuser's sockpuppets? InvadingInvader (userpage, talk) 18:14, 28 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@InvadingInvader: Hello Invader! In this case, the best thing to do would be to jsut leave it alone and if TPA, EMD, etc. needs to be done then let an admin know about it (preferably in a way that won't induce the streisand effect per WP:DENY). Since it's an LTA tagging the sock wouldn't be a good idea as it would just encourage them to continue as most of the time this is essentially a game to them. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 19:34, 28 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

On the fence for CSD/PROD/AfD[edit]

Hi, Can someone take a look at SupplyHouse.com please? As the title says I'm unsure where to send this article. It looks to struggle with the independent coverage required to pass wp:org but may also be a potential A7 target as I can't see a claim to notability.

I would appreciate the opinion of another editor. Feel free to action your opinion.

Thanks Carver1889 (talk) 19:08, 28 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Carver1889: I would say A7 is correct since it says "This applies to any article...that does not indicate why its subject is important or significant". They just seem to be your average HVAC retailer. If an admin thinks A7 is not appropriate then PROD might be your next best bet, and if someone removes that then if you still believe it's not notable take it to AFD. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 19:31, 28 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Carver1889, WP:A7 doesn't ask for a claim to notability, it just requires a claim to significance or importance. If that article makes that, it's not eligible. I'd say that the material at SupplyHouse.com#Leadership constitutes a (weak) claim to significance. Cordless Larry (talk) 20:35, 28 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you, between what you wrote and the declining admin I think I now have an improved understanding of A7. Carver1889 (talk) 10:08, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

merging languages[edit]

hi! i just made a new wikipedia page, which was originally in German, but when you try and switch languages German isn't there. How do I connect them? Hello! I have been working on Draft:Matthew Simpson Davage and I came across an issue with the "infobox officeholder" template. Is there a way to add more office titles, beyond the three offered in the template? The subject was president of five universities. PigeonChickenFish (talk) 22:20, 28 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Alan Turing site - I'd like to make an addition please[edit]

I'd like to make an addition to the Turing page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Turing - at the end of the "Awards, honours, and tributes" section:

Turing was the subject of an opera by composer Justine F. Chen and librettist David Simpatico, which had its world premiere in Chicago, Illinois on March 23, 2023. The opera was commissioned by American Lyric Theater and performed by Chicago Opera Theater[footnote].

What to do about a disruptive young editor?[edit]

This one is beyond my pay grade. Could someone look at user:Ericnex13 please? I didn't realise he is only 13 until looking at his home page – after I've given him heavy-weight warnings for disruptive editing. And make no mistake, this is not silly tagging but fairly well crafted fiction. Presumably you have a canned "advice for minor editors" that you can deploy? Need help with my submission[edit]

Thank you in advance for taking the time to look at my plight. My submission is this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Max_and_the_Invaders I've looked at a number of bands who have been less published and well known in their local areas, but I can't seem to get any traction unless I find a book, or can prove the band went on tour. I personally think I included it under some tags that give it extra scrutiny. Could someone please advise me what to do next? Many thanks, Major Major Detail (talk) 23:02, 28 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Major Detail, User:M4V3R1CK32 has given you extensive advice, which you should consider before resubmitting. There is a lack of good sources. Non-independent sources, including interviews do not count for notability. You appear to have one source, but we need a couple more. Hello, Lamano2023. An acceptable Wikipedia article summarizes the significant coverage that reliable, independent sources devote to the topic, which are presented as references. Your draft completely lacks references to such sources, and therefore cannot be accepted without major revisions. Please familiarize yourself with the Notability guideline for polticians. What is your relationship with Velez? Cullen328 (talk) 02:19, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Election to a town ward or board of education is not sufficiently notable to warrant an article. Rather than trying to improve the draft, I recommend putting Db-author inside of double curly brackets {{ }} at the top, so that an Administrator can delete the draft. Is this an appropriate article to create?[edit]

I am interested in creating an article about the subset of Taylor Swift fans (Gaylors) who believe Taylor Swift is queer. There are independent articles from well known publications on the topic that could be used for citation, and I believe there is more than enough information on the topic for it to have it's own article, however I am wondering if the reason it hasn't been created yet is because it is against the conventions of Wikipedia in some way. Derekeaaron1 (talk) 01:27, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello @Derekeaaron1 and Welcome to the Teahouse! As long as the article is properly (reliable, not just blogs) sourced, I see no reason it wouldn’t be created because Wikipedia is not censored. I would recommend creating a draft using the Wikipedia:Article wizard. - 🔥𝑰𝒍𝒍𝒖𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝑭𝒍𝒂𝒎𝒆 (𝒕𝒂𝒍𝒌)🔥 01:48, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Derekeaaron1: You might wish to discuss this topic at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Taylor Swift. GoingBatty (talk) 02:43, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Derekeaaron1, assuming the sources exist, and since I started Larries myself I think they may very well do (try to get books and scholarly articles if you can), there's no reason why you shouldn't. Johnlock probably meets WP:GNG too. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 06:45, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you! do you have any insight onto how reliable sources need to be in order to claim "some people think X" as opposed to "X is true?" there are a number of articles about specific gaylor theories that are typically not from reliable sources, but I'm not sure what the standards are to just say a theory exists. "Indian" vs. "Native American" vs. "Indigenous", etc.[edit]

Hi there!

In recent times, there has been a lot of discourse about how to refer to people who were or come from a lineage of the first inhabitants of the Americas. The use of "Indian" has been waning in favor of "Native American" or "Indigenous people/person," so I'm wondering if Wikipedia has set any ground rules on this. For example, I recently came across an article that almost exclusively uses "Indian," and I'm not sure whether I should be editing those instances.

Any guidance is much appreciated.

Thanks!

Daniel Nardster (talk) 02:04, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello, Nardster. When writing about the Indigenous peoples of what is now the United States, the coverage in Native Americans in the United States#Terminology differences may be useful. In Canada, such peoples are commonly called First Nations, but Inuit people in Alaska, Canada and Greenland are usually classified differently. Other terminology is used in Spanish and Portuguese speaking areas of the Americas. The bottom line is that you need to read the sources specific to the topic, and use the terminology used by the sources. Sometimes this will mean introducing and explaining several terms, in context. Recent changes[edit]

I am looking to patrol recent changes, and I am not finding it to update for me. Could it just be my internet connection? I have the following filter saved: Very likely have problems, very likely bad faith, Unregistered, Newcomers, Human (not bot), Page edits, Page creations, Logged actions, and New users.

Could any of those be triggering some kind of non-responsive feed? I find it hard to believe that there simply is no vandalism at all happening on Wikipedia. TriskySeskel (talk) 02:31, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi, I never see any results if I select "very likely". I assume these get mopped up by ClueBot or edit filters. "Likely bad faith" and "Likely have problems" are giving me results at the moment (and always do). Tacyarg (talk) 03:27, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Submitting of draft[edit]

please how can I make my draft to become an article or how can I submit my draft to be accepted among articles when I am worry.DusFisher (talk) 04:17, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

DusFisher, perhaps you're asking about Draft:Yue Song. This has various problems, but the most important one is lack of evidence of notability. The draft currently has three sources. Two of them have no text (and the draft gives one of these two a wrong title). The third is IMDb, which is unusable for most purposes. So the draft currently has no substantive, reliable sources. It needs to show (and of course to use) three. Where are these three? If you don't cite them (perhaps because they don't exist), then no article can be created. -- Hoary (talk) 05:02, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
so now how can I fix the problems to be accepted and what are the problems that I need to correct.DusFisher (talk) 05:33, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
You can:
  • read the essay at Wikipedia:Writing Wikipedia articles backward (which is what you have tried to do);
  • blank all of your current Draft's text (it will still be available through the Draft's 'View history' tab if you need to refer to it or re-use any of it;
  • find three or more published, independent, Reliable sources that discuss your subject at some length;
  • Write new text based solely on what is in those sources, and cite them. This will create an acceptable "core" for the article, which you can expand on.
If you cannot find three such sources, then there is almost no hope of demonstrating the subject's Notability and the Draft will not be accepted as an Article: perhaps in the future more will be published about the subject (see WP:Too soon), and you (or others) can try again. When a celebrity dies - How is their page edited so fast?[edit]

whenever there is a celebrity death, the moment it is announced I go to Wikipedia and someone has already changed their profile to say "was" and edited the article to be in the past tense.

I remember when Michael Jackson died. I heard the first news report about it and already it had been changed. It's bizzare. MrBauer24 (talk) 05:45, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@MrBauer24, here's an article about that from 2018:[10]. And, of course, there's Deaditor. There are a lot more people than the regular editors who knows that they can edit, and it seems that when people see this particular error, it makes sense to them to correct it. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 06:11, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
MrBauer24, it is a well known fact going back hundreds of years that mass media interest surges after the death of a celebrity. Since Wikipedia is the encyclopedia that anyone can edit and there are many many millions of people constantly monitorig the internet news and social media ecosystem, it is not surprising that there would be countless people rushing to edit Wikipedia when a celebrity dies. A problem is that false death reports are frequent, and we have the obligation to get it right. Cullen328 (talk) 07:30, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Deaditor redirects to Death and Wikipedia, which starts Death and Wikipedia includes all discussions of how Wikipedia editors present death of public figures. Which is one of the more leaden of the opening sentences I've encountered. Incidentally, in the second sentence the article appears to change its mind: Wikipedia editors, plural, don't attend to this solemn task; the "Wikipedia community", singular, does. So fix it would be a reasonable response; but I plead laziness. -- Hoary (talk) 09:03, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Hoary, based on your "leaden" comment, I boldly changed this to say "Death and Wikipedia discusses how Wikipedia editors present the death of public figures." The first part definitely needed changing, and "the" was sorely lacking. David10244 (talk) 03:34, 31 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I just signed up as a Wikipedia writer[edit]

I just signed up as a Wikipedia writer, and I noticed that the page for Debonair Magazine includes a name, Ratnakar Mavilach, that does not have an existing page. Would it be appropriate for me to create a page for Ratnakar Mavilach, and if so, what are the guidelines I should follow to ensure that the page meets Wikipedia's notability criteria? Wikimanvir (talk) 06:20, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Wikimanvir welcome to Wikipedia! Based on [11], it seems that the sources demanded by WP:N isn't there. Of course google doesn't know all, but if you're goal is to make an article that can "stick", you need to find those sources first.
Take a look at WP:BACKWARD, it has good guidance. And you need to know how to add references correctly, this is essential, WP:TUTORIAL can help with that. Good luck! Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 06:37, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Wikipedians, help?[edit]

Hello wikipedians, I uploaded the Wordpad icon file on Commons (as I've seen many Windows built-in program icons gets uploaded to Commons) and it's being said that it meets the criteria for speedy deletion. Is that the case for this icon?, as many windows built-in program icons didn't get flagged. Click here for the icon. Paowee (talk) 10:48, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Paowee welcome to Teahouse. See WP:OTHERSTUFF for why that is not a good argument in general. Also note that Wikimedia Commons is a separate project. I am inclined to agree that the logo is not "simple", but perhaps it is a candidate for WP:NFCC fair use on English Wikipedia as a logo for an article. ~ 🦝 Shushugah (he/him • talk) 11:11, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Oh, alright. Now I get it. Thanks! Edit: I have now reuploaded it to comply with NFCC (Eng. Wikipedia only), so if it indeed violates it, it can be removed, no harm done. (I'm still not sure if it violates it or not though.) Paowee (talk) 11:12, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Paowee In my opinion, you have complied with the WP:NONFREE criteria for the upload to en;Wikipedia and use in the article WordPad. Note, however, that the icon cannot be used on any other articles here. Mike Turnbull (talk) 11:49, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Removed Article Submitted for Review - Draft Name[edit]

Hello, I wrote an article which was published to Wikipedia and it was removed due to lack of resources. I have since fixed the article and submitted it for review, but wondered if I needed to recreate the article and publish again instead. Also, i noticed that my title has the word "draft", will that disappear once the article is approved/published? Sorry for the questions, but I am a newbie. :) Here is my article: Draft:Hygord Amédée Manywords4u (talk) 11:19, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi @Manywords4u: the draft has the 'Draft:' prefix as long as it remains unpublished, in the draft space.
You say you have submitted it for review, but you haven't. I can do that for you, if you'd like.
That being said, the draft would only be declined, as it is almost entirely unreferenced (which is especially a problem in articles on living people), and there is no evidence that the subject is notable in Wikipedia terms. For that reason, I would suggest that you continue working on it before submitting it. Best, -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 11:26, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank You for the quick response. So my references section at the bottom will not suffice? Manywords4u (talk) 11:45, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Manywords4u: What is needed is to demonstrate that this person is "notable" in Wikipedia’s meaning of the term. That requires references that are (1) independent of him, (2) reliable, and (3) deal with him in-depth. We do not need many references, but we need high-quality ones.
Of your three references, two are related to institutes/foundations that he is involved in, and the last is a journal piece they wrote. All of those fail part (1).
If you cannot find adequate references, the article will not be accepted, no matter how much you work on it. TigraanClick here for my talk page ("private" contact) 11:58, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Manywords4u Along with the rest of the great advice, note that the sources that you want to use, as references, are from published material that talks about him. We don't need to know (only) what he has done, but what others have said about him. Good luck. David10244 (talk) 03:40, 31 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
You've linked each of his books to amazon.fr via amzn.eu. I'm surprised that you've linked each to a retailer, and I'm also surprised that Wikipedia hasn't yet put amzn.eu on its blacklist (for being a redirecting service). Incidentally, if the books are "translated into several languages (English, French, Creole)", then which language(s) are they translated from? Other problems: Why is "Education" treated at more length than is any other section, and where are the sources for it? And most importantly (and as raised above), where are three in-depth, reliable sources about the man? -- Hoary (talk) 12:06, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Remove the hyperlinks for the books. Career needs dates (years) and refs. Education needs refs. Everything needs refs. Listing his books is OK but contributes zero to confirming notability because self-published. David notMD (talk) 12:42, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank You. I removed the amazon links. How would I reference Education? I will add the dates (years) for the career events. Manywords4u (talk) 13:28, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Draft:Hygord Amédée has two paragraphs about his education. Where did you get this information? It there a publication to cite? Information about a living person may be true, but unless it can be verified by citing a reliable source reference it cannot be in the article. Same for career information. If your source is from speaking with or corresponding with Hygord Amédée, that cannot be used. What people say or write about themselves is not a reliable source. That includes published interviews. David notMD (talk) 14:47, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Manywords4u, you've uploaded a photo of the subject as "own work". Are you indeed in contact with them? 199.208.172.35 (talk) 14:54, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Help (im)proving "notability" of articles[edit]

I've submitted 2 draft articles (Draft:The Foundation for Research on Information Technologies in Society, Draft:Schmid & Partner Engineering AG, originally published, then selected for deletion, then "drafitified").

The IT'IS article was declined for not having references clearly traceable to the main text for the purpose of meeting notability per WP:GNG, for having too many references, for having too many external links...

The references I cite include many peer-reviewed papers published in respected scientific journals. Are these discounted because some of the co-authors performed research in IT'IS laboratories?

The SPEAG article was moved to draft status; I submitted it for review today.

Full discolosure: I was employed by the IT'IS Foundation as a science writer from 2012 until my retirement in 2019; since then, I have continued to work for IT'IS as an editor on an hourly basis. In early 2015, I recommended to the foundation's director, Niels Kuster, to contribute articles to Wikipedia, but early drafts were shelved until recently.

I do not view my drafts as attempts at self-promotion -- both IT'IS and SPEAG have mechanisms in-house for this purpose, presentations at conferences and peer-reviewed scientific articles for IT'IS and a sales office for SPEAG. I honestly believe that the information in the articles is globally important and potentially of interest to many consulters of wilipedia.

I am consulting a US-based expert on telecommunications, the former corporate VP of MOTOROLA, on both of these drafts. He would like to draft an article on the history of portable device SAR testing in support of the 2 existing drafts, but there is a catch: he and Niels Kuster were main drivers in the develpment of precision instruments for wireless device testing and he fears that his contributions will be labeled as biased.

I will be drafting more articles about another partner organization -- Zurich MedTech (with a focus on MRI safety issues) -- and background information about wireless testing and exposure studies.

Any tips are greatly appreciated. PLBounds (talk) 14:18, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@PLBounds: Starting with three rather minor points:
  1. Please avoid using section-break lines on talk pages, it makes it harder to scan the page. I have replaced them by a somewhat-similar graphical element (I considered removing them entirely but arguably that would have denaturated your post).
  2. You fall under our definition of paid editor. The sentences you put on your userpage are adequate to disclose your relationship; I would encourage you to use the standard template {{paid}} (but that is not mandatory).
  3. Whether you view your drafts as attempts at self-promotion, or whether others view it thusly, is irrelevant. What matters is if they verify Wikipedia's policies.
Now, onto the substantive points.
The first (and most important) thing to check is whether the subjects of the article verify Wikipedia’s definition of notability. This is a property of the subjects, not of the (draft) articles. If such sources do not exist, stop any work on the drafts, because such work will be wasted: no amount of editing can overcome a lack of notability.
To show a company is notable, you need to find multiple sources that are simultaneously (1) independent of the subject, (2) reliable, and (3) describe the subject at length. Anything written by the company, its founders, employees etc. is ruled out by (1); this includes interviews as well. Scientific articles written by unrelated people will usually meet (1) and (2), but are at risk of failing (3). A single sentence along the lines of "we used company X's foobar to cromulate the thing" does not describe company X or its products at length; on the other hand, a full-review article comparing company X's foobars with company Y's foobars might qualify.
The second thing is to make sure the drafts are written from a neutral point of view. (This is less important than notability, because it can always be fixed from within Wikipedia.) Wikipedia articles aim to provide a "facts-only" outlook on a subject ("dry and boring", one might say, although it is certainly possible to write less-boring articles while respecting the guidelines).
Consider for instance the following from your draft:
  • with the mission to develop novel scientific methods. Unless it is a military squad, it does not have a "mission" - it has "goals", "aims", etc. Also, "novel - Are there many research institutes that have the mission to develop old scientific methods?
  • Compare the draft’s wording of The research activities of the IT'IS Foundation are centered around computational life sciences to expand the scientific basis for safe and beneficial applications of EM energy in wireless information technologies, as well as to apply computational physics to advance the expansion of precision medicine. with the IT'IS Foundation uses methods from computational life sciences and computational physics to study the safety of wireless transmission and precision medicine. My quick and dirty rewording does lose a warm and fuzzy feeling of nice-people-doing-nice-things, but does it lose information?
  • is heavily involved in - would you write that another institute is lightly involved in? Reversing the meaning of the sentences often allows to identify much peacocky wording (i.e. positively-loaded turns of phrase that contain no significant information)
  • The IT'IS Foundation has participated in a variety of research consortiums Well, duh. It’s a research institute. That’s what they do. If you’re not going to tell us which right away, you might as well drop the sentence.
I haven’t looked very deep at the rest but I strongly suspect the paragraph "The REFLEX project controversy" is not using the best available sources, and as a result, is giving a rather slanted presentation. In particular, the about page of "Microwave News" is full of red flags to me (neither Science nor Nature feel the need to say their editor is a PhD, nor do they show reviews by the popular press). TigraanClick here for my talk page ("private" contact) 16:09, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi @PLBounds, welcome to the Teahouse. Any source you are using to demonstrate a subject's notability must be entirely independent of the subject. Once notability has been established via such sources, other, less independent sources can be used to add or verify information (though Wikipedia prefers unaffiliated sources).
The person you are in contact with would have a COI which they should declare. Their ability to contribute would, indeed, probably be more limited than an uninvolved editor. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 15:29, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Draft Decline[edit]

Hello Teahouse members, I created Draft:Sangramsingh Thakur and it was rejected by User:Akevsharma which is Sockpuppet after that User:Bonadea rejected my draft for reasons the draft do not show significant coverage but according to Wikipedia WP:PUBLISHED WP:RS I'm citing all sources with Draft there have also significant projects available on Wikipedia with name and also some WP:REF available. So please help me about it. Rajmama (talk) 14:51, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Rajmama Articles about this person were deleted three times backin 2018-19. Because of the repeats, "This page has been protected so only extended confirmed users can create it." You do not qualify. For your draft, it has been Declined (not Rejected) twice for insufficient referencing. I agree. Your refs mention Thakur by name, but do not have at-length content about him. The other reason also exists, as you are not extended confirmed yet. David notMD (talk) 15:01, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Rajmama: WP:SIGCOV states that "Significant coverage is more than a trivial mention". In order to demonstrate notability for inclusion in Wikipedia, you would need to find multiple published reliable sources that discuss Thakur's work in detail, not just a mention that he appears in a particular film. I also added a few {{citation needed}} tags to point out unreferenced information in your draft. GoingBatty (talk) 16:24, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@GoingBatty thank you for your suggestion. I have one more doubt, as I'm started working on thakur's Draft I have read all articles and sources related to Indian Predator: Murder In A Courtroom and I saw thakur is one of the pararal lead actor of the series and I'm added his name in that series in starring section but user:bonadea removed his name for a reason he is not a actor of this series and said attached sources.after that I'm added his name with sources but he again removed his name and this time he give me reason for that I'm promoting him. So I'm asking all wikipedians that Is creating articles of specific topic on Wikipedia or contributing on Wikipedia it that means you promoting them? Rajmama (talk) 12:25, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Rajmama: I don't know what "pararal" is supposed to mean. Some (but not all) people use Wikipedia for promotion, which is not what Wikipedia is for. Per the Wikipedia:BOLD, revert, discuss cycle, you may post at Talk:Indian Predator: Murder In A Courtroom to discuss your suggestions and concerns with Bonadea and other interested editors and come to a consensus. GoingBatty (talk) 13:23, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@GoingBatty it's an typical mistake its Parallel not pararal. And I'm also concerned with Bonadea but according to him I'm promoting thakur but I'm just contributing. so what can I do now? should i leave it in the middle? Rajmama (talk) 14:06, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Again: a) Since Thakur is not notable at this point, you will only be wasting your own time if you try to create an article about him. b) No reliable, independent sourcing has supported the claim that Thakur is a "parallel lead" in the TV series. As you know, the source you added is neither reliable nor independent, and it doesn't make that claim in any case. It's rather odd to keep adding that one name, and not either of the narrators or any of the rest of the cast... c) This guideline (which you have also been asked to read) discusses how to list cast members, including non-starring cast that are worth mentioning, in an article. --bonadea contributions talk 20:07, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I am writing a book. I want to use a chapter from Wikipedia, and I will reference it. OK[edit]

I am writing a book about the Merrimack River in N.H. and Mass. I want to use Wikipedia as a source. In short, I want to use its chapter on "Tributaries" of the Merrimack.

Can I use it word for word? I can't find the author of every sentence.

Again, I will reference it. Thank you. Dyke Hendrickson (talk) 15:40, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello and welcome to the Teahouse. Articles rarely have specific authors; articles are worked on by the community. Instead of using Wikipedia itself as a source, it would be better to use the sources of the information displayed in the Wikipedia article.
That said, you can reuse content from Wikipedia as long as you provide attribution. 331dot (talk) 15:50, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Dyke Hendrickson, see Wikipedia:Reusing Wikipedia content and Wikipedia:Citing Wikipedia. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 15:52, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Dyke Hendrickson: Yes, you can. The only condition is to cite both the fact it comes from Wikipedia, and the license it is available under. You could for instance have a notice at the end of the book that chapter 7 uses material from the Wikipedia article XXX, which is released under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share-Alike License 3.0. If it is an online book, you are supposed to link the Wikipedia article.
Whether you should is of course up to you and your editor - you would do well to verify that any substantive claims taken from the Wikipedia article are correct before reprinting them uncritically. Ideally, that claim would give a specific source that you could check, but many Wikipedia articles fall short of that ideal. Creating a subcategory[edit]

Hi all, I recently created the category Assault rifles of Israel, but am not able to see how I can add it as a subcategory to the pre-existing Rifles of Israel category. Could someone tell me what I'm meant to do here? Cheers. Loafiewa (talk) 16:04, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Tag it as being in the category, just as you would an article. - UtherSRG (talk) 16:06, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Is this a notable subject?[edit]

Hi! I'm wondering if the topic I'd like to write about is notable or not. I'd like to write about an online publication called "Astrovitae Magazine" which seems to be the first community-based magazine in its speculative evolution genre. Could anyone verify if this topic has enough notability before I draft an article? Thank you! 72.240.47.82 (talk) 16:41, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Good day, IP
After a quick look up and scroll, I only found one decent source without going deeper. If you can find three independent and reliable sources, in general that means an article is worthy of inclusion. The first three results I see when looking it up is their own website, an Instagram page, and a YouTube video. The fourth, Ko-Fi looks independent but questionable. However, there may be more sources. ✶Mitch199811✶ 18:12, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you! Do blog posts count as notable sources? I found the magazine talked about by Gert van Dijk's blog (a prominent spec evo artist), as well as a few other less prominent artists in the genre. Would these sources be considered unreliable despite coming directly from artists in this particular genre? 72.240.47.82 (talk) 18:33, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Please read WP:BLOGS. In short, the vast majority of blogs are not accepted as reliable sources. The few exceptions do not seem to apply here. Gert van Dijk's blog is neither an independent source nor a reliable source. Cullen328 (talk) 18:52, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you for this link! Very helpful. I think it might be best for me to hold off on authoring an article about this magazine as there is not enough notoriety. 72.240.47.82 (talk) 18:58, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Checking on progress of an update[edit]

I have submitted a Wikipedia page for publication. It is available on Wikipedia as a draft. I understand that it is being evaluated for publication but I have no notion of the progress that is being made. What steps can I take to find out how the evaluation is going? Bchanda (talk) 18:19, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi @Bchanda, welcome to the Teahouse. You have indeed created a draft, but it has not been submitted for review. More importantly, we already have Ramaprasad Chanda. If you want to add additional sourced content to that article, you are free to do so - creating and submitting a separate draft is not necessary. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 18:33, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hello, Bchanda, and welcome to the Teahouse. Assuming you mean Draft:Rai Bahadur Ramaprasad Chanda, you have not submitted it for review. I have added a header that will allow you to do so, but if you submit it in its present form, I have no doubt that it will be quickly declined.
You need to get it into standard format, with headers, and (most particularly) inline references - see Referencing for beginners.
Once you do submit it, note that there is no process or progress. It will sit in the pile for review until a volunteer reviewer chooses to pick it up and review it. In my opinion, great blocks of text without visible heading will make reviewers less keen to look at it. ColinFine (talk) 18:33, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@ColinFine The article already exists, see above. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 18:50, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Bchanda Consider adding to Ramaprasad Chanda, which is currently a short and under-referenced article, but PLEASE FIRST learn more about Wikipedia writing style (Wikipedia:Manual of Style) and how to reference (Help:Referencing for beginners). As written, none of the content of your very lengthy draft would be acceptable. Much of it fails neutral point of view (WP:NPOV). David notMD (talk) 06:12, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Organizations[edit]

I thought I read somewhere that you're not supposed to create a page about an organization. But there are in fact many on wikipedia already and I find them very useful. So what are the criteria for an organization to be included? SquarePeg89 (talk) 19:20, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello, SquarePeg89. Please read Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies). Cullen328 (talk) 19:26, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
SquarePeg89, you might have also read that if someone is involved with an organization, then we advise them not to write about the organization. This is considered to be a conflict of interest. Involved editors have a much harder time judging their organization's notability, writing from the required neutral point of view, and not using unpublished personal knowledge or firsthand information from the organization itself. --Drm310 🍁 (talk) 22:00, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Notability[edit]

Is the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography a Notable source in its own right? Mormoironier (talk) 20:10, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi @Mormoironier, welcome to the Teahouse. At a brief glance, the notability of the Dictionary of National Biography seems to be adequately demonstrated by the sources in the article. The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography doesn't seem to have enough coverage to warrant its own separate article from that one. If you're asking whether it's a reliable source, yes, but as a reference work it is tertiary - secondary sources are preferred. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 20:18, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

How do I edit the capitalization in a draft title line after I have started the draft page?[edit]

I made a page. It is in draft from. I need to edit the capitalization of the title name in the draft, but when I click "edit" I am allowed to edit all of the page except the title line. Do I have to start over with a new title and new capitalization, or can I somehow change the capitalization in my existing draft without having to start all over again? LaoHu777 (talk) 20:34, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello, and welcome to the Teahouse. The name of a page is not part of the page, but tells the software where to find it, so you change it by moving the page. I wouldn't worry too much about the name of Draft:Chu Tat-Shing, because when a reviewer accepts the draft they will move it to article space, and correct the name if necessary. But you can move it if you wish. ColinFine (talk) 20:41, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Primary and secondary sources?[edit]

Is there an illustrative list of notable primary and secondary sources? Mormoironier (talk) 20:40, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi again @Mormoironier. I believe you're looking for reliable sources, not notable ones. Those are very different things. A useful list is at WP:RS/PS - each source there has been discussed and the conclusion about its reliability is indicated. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 20:44, 29 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Though it's worth noting that the list at WP:RS/PS is by no means exhaustive – most of the sources which get used on Wikipedia are not on that list, and as you get experienced with Wikipedia you will need to learn how to evaluate for yourself whether or not a source is reliable; WP:RS (particularly the section on types of sources) provides guidance on evaluating this. Early life vs. career[edit]

I am not sure when, in a biographical article, to move from early life to career, given that the individual I am writing about (the singer Emei) started performing in a professional context as young as 15. Would these pre-adulthood professional endeavors be considered career or early life? I apologize if this question is to specific for here.

Cheers,

I would recommend that you should make a new section, Early Career, or Career beginnings. Look at Taylor Swift for an example. Emeen (talk) 01:40, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That's a great idea, thank you! I will probably make use of that combined early/career style section as seen in the Taylor Swift article.

Issues with first & New Article[edit]

Hello Guys,. I have opened my account for 4 years but I just created my first article. it a DJ article which I created, But now I can see on my article saying "This article is being considered for deletion in accordance with Wikipedia's deletion policy" and I don't know what to do. Please I need everyone help.

The article name is Harjex The DJ Harjex10 (talk) 01:21, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Harjex10: Welcome to the Teahouse! If you are Harjex the DJ, then you have a conflict of interest that you need to disclose on your user page. The article needs more independent sources that provide significant coverage of Harjex's career, per Wikipedia's notability requirements. YouTube, Spotify, Apple Music and other locations where Harjex's music is published are not independent. Interviews are also not independent. Hope this helps! Symbol redirect vote2.svg Courtesy link: Harjex the dj
@Harjex10, the short answer is that you did get that you need top media pages right, but that's not exactly the definition of independent sources.
  • Reliable sources mean ones from top media pages/news organizations (think Reuters, Ars Technica, Rolling Stone etc). blogs or youtube are not counted, as well as any social media site including YouTube (unless it already comes from a news organization that by itself counts as one).
  • Independent sources mean ones that are not affiliated by any way to the subject orher than covering the subject. that means no press conferences, interviews, sponsored articles, or the subject's very own website.
basically, to prove notability, you need sources that are both reliable and independent. (i.e. from top media pages and not controlled by the subject). happy editing! 💜  melecie  talk - 04:24, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hello, Harjex, and welcome to the Teahouse. What you need to understand is that Wikipedia is not interested in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is only interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. Why petrolling process takes more time for political pages?[edit]

Can anyone explain why new political pages experience a huge delay in petrolling process? 117.203.14.218 (talk) 08:18, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello and welcome to the Teahouse. It would help to know what articles(the preferred term, not "pages") you created; your IP has no edits logged other than this one. Patrolling is done by volunteers who do what they can when they can; I know of no systemic reason why articles in certain topic areas would take longer to be patrolled. Patrollers choose what they patrol, it could be that a particlar topic area might seem controversial and as such they are more reluctant to patrol it. Do you have a particular need for a speedy patrol? 331dot (talk) 08:43, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

You wrote in 27.3.2023: "This is the teahouse, a place where basic questions are answered about Wikipedia." Hello and welcome. I don't think this is as basic a question as you seem to think it is. I can say that anonymity("pseudonyms") is important to the functioning of Wikipedia for people who choose to do it. They may fear government persecution, or shunning by families/colleagues if it was known they edited about a particular topic. I don't know much about Wikipedia from before 2010 but you seem to be basing this question on a statement of some kind. 331dot (talk) 10:38, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

For a long time, Wikipedia's dissemination of information was based on no sources. You tried to invalidate this basic fact by your ignorance. Shame on you! Anonymity is idiocy, it is not recognized or accepted in intellectual texts. Have you something against scientific world? Please, can I get here someone to answer who knows the basics of Wikipedia? 2001:2003:F647:5800:F040:57B4:1E4D:F2E (talk) 10:54, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I don't believe "Wikipedia's dissemination of information was based on no sources" is an accurate statement, but as I said, I'm not an expert on early Wikipedia history. Interesting that you are criticizing anonymity while editing via IP address. Wikipedia is not an "intellectual text" or scholarly work, it is (mostly) written by lay people for lay people, summarizing what independent reliable sources say about a topic. It shouldn't be used for scholarly or academic purposes. I am starting to think that you have an ax to grind here and unless you care to share the basis of your questions I really have no more to say. I again say that this is probably not as basic a question as you claim and you may be better off discussing this in the Village Pump. 331dot (talk) 11:00, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Don't threaten me with an axe when I ask for Wikipedia's basics for 2002-2010, which I have also spent dozens of hours correcting this year. Should I reveal my name to those who threaten me with an axe? Shame! Wikipedia quotes a lot from academic sources, but quotes were despised for a long time in the beginning. Don't answer if you don't know, axe-wielder. May I have a responder with a more civilised manners? 2001:2003:F647:5800:F040:57B4:1E4D:F2E (talk) 11:21, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I did not "threaten you with an axe", I said that you have an axe to grind(please google that expression if you are unfamiliar with it). 331dot (talk) 11:23, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
You don't have to reveal your name if you don't wish to- but then you shouldn't criticize the very anonymity that you are hiding behind. I'm also not sure what you mean when you say you corrected edits from 2010- most articles have been edited since then. I want to help you, but you must help us to help you. 331dot (talk) 11:26, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Pseudonyms: A conscious decision was to allow all editors to edit either unregistered (as you are doing here), under their own name (although Wikipedia had and has no means of confirming true names), and as a User name. The great majority choose the last. Given that with certain 'locked' exceptions, any editor can edit any article, insisting on true names would convey a false sense of ownership of articles to editors who either created or extensively added to articles. A second reason is to prevent harassment of editors, here and in the real world. Wikipedia is against 'outing' (see Wikipedia:Outing (essay)). Requiring editors to use their true names is contrary to the protection of anonimity. The use of User names ("pseudonyms") is broadly accepted at forums and blogs and social media. I was adding the above between the time that this was an open Teahouse discussion and it being closed. David notMD (talk) 12:00, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@David notMD: thank you. You had a better answer in subject Basics: "insisting on true names would convey a false sense of ownership of articles to editors who either created or extensively added to articles." This is not entirely true, because almost everyone knows that they don't own articles. People don't demand ownership, but respect. This is the way in the academic world. And that's why real names are used in high-level texts with gentlemen and ladies. I don't want to imitate social media where people many times attack behind a pseudonym. I usually use my real name. But this time I used ip to learn how Wikipedia respects ip-users.

But this was not the main question. I wonder why Wikipedia articles were written a long time without references. It is easy to understand why Wikipedia abandoned this practice. 2001:2003:F647:5800:F040:57B4:1E4D:F2E (talk) 13:31, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Help adding conflict of interest notification to my user page.[edit]

I built a page for Chu Tat-Shing and added a conflict of interest notice on my user page LaoHu777. Then the page was moved and the title updated to Chu Tat-shing, to conform with grammar standards for names like this. Now my conflict of interest notice does not link to the newly titled page and I want to add another conflict of interest notice that links to the new page. How do I do this? I made the first notice when I set up the page before it was moved. I don't know yet how to add one to a newly titled page. LaoHu777 (talk) 11:44, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Norms1107 accout blocked[edit]

I have been having problems with my account being blocked. A student at our Career Technology Center (High School) has taken on this project. I do not know her. She was working on the account trying to answer some of the notability questions when all this happened. I created the above account for her to use and apparently that was not a good idea. I then suggested that she create her own account, which she did. My knowledge of Wikipedia is somewhere near zero and apparently she ran into some problems as well, but is better equipped to deal with them until the accounts were blocked. I would gladly delete my account if I knew how. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. I am sure she is getting frustrated. 2600:1700:A620:E08F:64B8:24E7:22CB:AB33 (talk) 12:52, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

User:Norms1107 created an unreferenced article about himself (Norm Schrein) that was Speedy Deleted, then went on to create the article again. It was cleaned up by others and moved to Draft:Norm Schrein. There, account User:Sydni62095 restored Norm's version, word-for-word (still unreferenced). Whether either the mysterious high school student or Norm using a second account, both now Indefinitely blocked. My advice: A cursory search found no evidence that Norm meets Wikipedia's criteria for notability. Abandon working on the draft (meh, you are blocked, anyway); in six months it will be deleted as an inactive draft. Don't bother appealing the blocks on the two accounts, as it appears that your only motivation to being a Wikipedia editor was to create an article about yourself. The draft is still a draft. There is no evidence it has been moved to mainspace. A search on Tropical Storm Bopha (2006) redirects to 2006 Pacific typhoon season#Severe Tropical Storm Bopha (Inday), where Bopha is one of many described storms. I strongly advise against any attempt to move the draft to mainspace, as the quality of English is very poor (sentence fragments and nonsequiters). Is Daily Hive a reliable source?[edit]

Hi, I'm asking this question because on the Wikipedia article for Bagel Bites, there's a part about them being pulled from Canadian shelves in 2022, but it says "citation needed". So I just searched up "bagel bites canada 2022" and found this Daily Hive article. Would this be a reliable enough source to cite on that Wikipedia article? this is probably not the right place to ask this lol IdfbAn (talk) 13:57, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I would reccomend you ask this on the Reference Desk. Emeen (talk) 15:06, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Emeen, the Reference Desks do not deal with reliability of sources. We have a noticeboard for that, @IdfbAn, WP:RSN. According to part of this discussion, which I found in the archives, the Daily Hive is not very reliable. You can start a new discussion there if you wish more opinions. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 15:11, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Editing Wikipedia on mobile[edit]

Hi, I understand that you can edit Wikipedia either on a mobile browser or the Wikipedia app. I would like to know your opinion on what’s better to use when editing on mobile and the differences between the two. Interstellarity (talk) 13:57, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Cullen328:, who I believe is the resident expert on mobile editing. Deor (talk) 14:12, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi, @Interstellarity:! I'm a new editor, but for what it's worth, I much prefer mobile view editing over the iOS app, but they have specific strengths and weaknesses. Quick citations, for example, are much easier with the Visual Editor citation tool, but last time I checked, the app just created empty ref tags that would then require parameters to be filled in manually. This is just one example inconsistency between mobile view vs. app. I jotted down some quick notes in my sandbox here, which may be somewhat out of date. (Talk pages for mobile view has been greatly improved recently for example.) You may be interested in seeking out @Clovermoss:, who recently wrote a Signpost article on the app front. I believe they are working with the development team on the app, whereas I'm honestly not sure what work (if any) is being done for mobile view editing. Don't know if I can be of much further help, given my lack of experience and the rather limited range of my edits (I'm almost entirely a copyeditor, on purpose.) Ultimately, I'm a mobile view editor for reasons that are probably pretty "esoteric" and may not translate well to other editors. Cheers. — LumonRedacts 14:52, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hello, Interstellarity. My personal preference as described in my essay is to use the fully functional desktop site on my phone. But anyone who prefers the mobile site or the mobile app is welcome to do so. Cullen328 (talk) 15:39, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I, like Cullen328, will also use the desktop site while editing on my phone. Both the app and the mobile browser site, IMHO, are hobbled versions of the desktop site, which is far more functional. I feel like the mobile site and the app are 1) optimized for readers over editors and 2) designed for an earlier generation of smartphones, before their functionality matched that of full desktop/laptop computers. I'm sure everyone has their own preferences, and mine are partially influenced by being a bit of an old-timer around here (been an active editor since 2005, had an account since 2006, and an admin since 2008) so some of it is being "set in my ways", but even when using my phone, I find I am still most comfortable editing the same way I do on a full sized computer. --Jayron32 17:37, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks for the ping, LumonRedacts! Interstellarity, I've gotten used to the app over time. I think it can be useful to get notifications about Wikipedia on the go (or in the certain situations stressful) and reading my watchlist to keep up with other changes is nice. Mobile view has way more features compared to the actual app and there's many differences that I can discuss if you're interested. If you do plan on trying the app, a key difference is whether you're using iOS or android. I use the latter and while it lacks some functionality, iOS lacks even more. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 18:58, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I’m on iOS and I’m sure a lot of editors prefer the desktop site over the mobile site or app. I would’ve expected the app to provide more features than the mobile site, but it doesn’t unlike other apps. I think as a reader I prefer the mobile site or app, but while editing the desktop site works best. Interstellarity (talk) 21:52, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Lettherebedarklight:. Yes. this is interesting: to test something new. In the article History of Wikipedia we find that Gnupedia had the same goals: "GNUpedia were nearly identical to Wikipedia: anyone can contribute, small contributions are welcome, plan on taking years, a narrow focus on encyclopedic content as the primary goal, anyone can read articles, anyone can mirror articles" and "Assuming attribution for articles (rather than anonymous by default), requiring attribution for quotations". The main idea was to allow people to write about sensitive things like Tiananmen Square without fear, but only a few articles are so sensitive. And you can then use IP address. But there is no mention of a lack of references.

Perhaps some people like to destroy history like in Tiananmen 1989, so one person deleted earlier part of this important discussion from Wikipedia. Lettherehebedarklight, here is an example what I mean about references: France#References 2001:2003:F647:5800:F040:57B4:1E4D:F2E (talk) 14:27, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Although I agree this is too general to be a Teahouse topic, I will comment on France as your references example. The article was created in 2001. It first started having Notes and references in 2006. It reached >100 references in July 2010. It is currently at 482 refs. Clearly, in early years, references were not a requirement, and many articles dating that far back have been changed over time to comply with current standards. Ditto for what are now the requirements for reliable source references. David notMD (talk) 15:38, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

english translation[edit]

hey guys, i did an English translation of a Dutch poet, Mia Gerhardt, as part of the effort to end the gender gap. However, I haven't made enough changes to translate pages...? So.. what happens to the page I translated? Sees a bit silly to leave it as a draft... Is there a way someone can look at it and say: okay, that's fine, publish? Since you are autoconfirmed, you could publish it yourself by simply moving the page to Mia Gerhardt. However, right now that draft does not cite any sources. ■ ∃ Madeline ⇔ ∃ Part of me ; 15:45, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Espanaporfavor You now find yourself in the position of writing the article backwards. See that link for why that's a bad position to be in and the reason you should have probably chosen a different starting article in Dutch. For English Wikipedia, full sourcing is required. Yolande of Dampierre, the other article you created in English Wikipedia, is not properly referenced. See Help:Referencing for beginners on how to create proper inline references. footnotes[edit]

I got this message declining my submission:

Draft:Jerrold Franklin

"Submission declined on 24 March 2023 by Dan arndt (talk). The content of this submission includes material that does not meet Wikipedia's minimum standard for inline citations. Please cite your sources using footnotes."

I don't know of any needed footnotes for my submission. Can someone look at my draft and tel me about one or two more citations I need, so I can learn how to identify them? Thank you. Alfa137 (talk) 17:24, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Alfa137:. Lets look at the first part of your draft article: "Jerrold Franklin graduated in 1948 from Stuyvesant High School, where he was awarded the algebra award. He then graduated with a B.E.E degree in 1952 from Cooper Union, where he was awarded the calculus medal and received honorable mention in the 1952 William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition." Where did you get that information from? Was if from a website? What website? Was it from a book? What book was it from? What page in that book can I find it? See, everything in Wikipedia needs to be verifiable, which means that someone else can follow up and find the source of the information; where it comes from. Everything written in Wikipedia should have been written about first in reliable sources, and we cite our sources for every bit of information. The most convenient way for readers to connect all of your information to the specific source it comes from is through footnotes; see Help:Footnotes for how to add those to your article. Help:Referencing for beginners is also a really good guide. --Jayron32 17:29, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

adding a note[edit]

I'm trying to add one of those notes that look like citations, but say "a" instead of a number. I am writing a page on the Islamic Armed Movement and there are 4 different dates for the same event from different sources so i'll just write night of August 26-27 as that is the most likely date. The sentence is the 9 lines down in the 3rd paragraph. Thanks PalauanReich (talk) 17:35, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@PalauanReich See IBM worker organization for an example. In the Note section I added {{Reflist|group=note}} and for the citation

. Hope that helps! ~ 🦝 Shushugah (he/him • talk) 17:41, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Speedy delete criterion[edit]

Is there a speedy delete criterion that can be cited for when an editor creates an article that was previously deleted only a few days prior based on an AfD? The AfD I am looking at is here: [14] and the article created today at Ponniyin Selvan: II appears to be a cut-and-paste copy from Draft:Ponniyin Selvan: II. Note that the draft was declined at AfC and this is the second time, at least, that editors have gone around the process to create a cut-and-paste copy.  — Archer1234 (t·c) 18:11, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Yes, I believe you are looking for WP:CSD#G4, and from that link you can see all of the criteria. - UtherSRG (talk) 18:36, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks for that. I am not sure how I missed it. The film is due to be released near the end of April, so I suspect between now and then we are going to have to deal with editors recreating the article. Would it make sense to salt the article to channel all that motivation towards improving the draft?  — Archer1234 (t·c) 18:51, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Making a page for a luxury jewelry brand[edit]

Hello, i want to create a Wikipedia page for my luxury jewelry brand. I am the founder and want to share with the world the history of the brand because what we managed to express with Cavero is so remarkable and has never been done. I want people to know the story behind everything and explain the deep meaning of all. How can i do that? Will i get rejected? Do i need to make corrections to other articles because Wikipedia lets me create mine?

Thank you in advance Cavero Official (talk) 20:16, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi @Cavero Official, welcome to the Teahouse. The very first problem here may be your username, since you seem to have used the name of your brand to create a role account, rather than one which reflects you as an individual. I'd recommend either abandoning this account and creating one with a different name, or requesting a change of username (instructions are here).
Next, you should read WP:PAID to see the disclosures you will need to make, and make them.
You should then start on the task of carefully reading WP:Your first article. You will need to demonstrate that your company is notable by Wikipedia's standards. This is done by finding several reliable, independent, published, secondary sources which talk about the company in some detail (see WP:42). You would then summarize what those sources say about your company, citing the sources themselves as you go (see WP:Referencing for beginners).
Wikipedia is not interested in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is only interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. If you cannot find such sources, it's best to just stop now. Also, be aware from the outset that statements like so remarkable and has never been done and explain the deep meaning of all are not very encyclopedic language. You'll need to learn to write much more neutrally. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 20:30, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Well, thank you so much i understand better now. How can i change my username? Is it a difficult procedure? Can you share me the link?
Thank you Cavero Official (talk) 20:37, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Cavero Official: please see Wikipedia:Changing username. Victor Schmidt (talk) 20:42, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Cavero Official:, you don't need to change your username. Just abandon it, and create a new account, not associated with the brand you own. The username "Cavero Official" shouldn't be used by anyone, so nothing will be lost. Maproom (talk) 21:05, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The guide at WP:YFA explains how to create and submit a draft, for review. WP:BACKWARD advises get your references in order first, before attempting a draft. As above, writing about "the story, deep meaning, etc." is forbidden. Only what people with no connection to Cavero have published about the company is suitable as content verification and references. Last, if against all odds you do have an article accepted, afterwards, other people can edit and you cannot. You would be limited to submitting edit requests on the Talk page of the article, for others to impement or not. David notMD (talk) 21:24, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Cavero Official, you may also want to read Wikipedia:An article about yourself isn't necessarily a good thing. Best wishes. Karenthewriter (talk) 22:23, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

You are free to improve that article; please be sure to only add information from reliable sources, summarizing and citing them. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 21:01, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I want to change the draft to Ramaprasad Chanda Bchanda (talk) 21:08, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi, Bchanda. There is no point in changing the name of Draft:Rai Bahadur Ramaprasad Chanda, because it is never going to be accepted as an article since there is already an article on the subject.
There may well be a point in developing parts of your draft into acceptable Wikipedia text (formatting headers, for example, and using inline citations - see WP:REFB). Then when you have done that, you can copy sections from your draft into the article. ColinFine (talk) 21:11, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Issue with saving[edit]

Hello everyone. I have an issue with saving my edits. I proceed as usual, but after pressing "publish changes" nothing is happening. The window just stays where it is, it gives me the progress bar and that's it. I can't abandon neither. I did not change any settings and I did restart my computer. I also tried to use another computer but there I've got the same issue. Have I been blocked from editing? However, I havn't received any message letting me know about it. Any ideas? Thanks! Zamekrizeni (talk) 20:56, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi @Zamekrizeni, welcome to the Teahouse. That sounds very like the issue which was reported here, over at VPT. Are you using the Visual Editor? Does switching to source editor allow you to make the edit? 199.208.172.35 (talk) 20:59, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you! Yes indeed, it seems to be the same issue. I used the source editor and was able to save there. Zamekrizeni (talk) 21:06, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Creating a New Article[edit]

What page or section do I click on to start composing a draft article?

Fwiw, I went into "edit" mode on an existing article (but didn't do any editing) just to get an idea of what good formatting looks like.

Thanks. Was Kisevalter Nash? (talk) 21:47, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Was Kisevalter Nash?: here's one way. On your user page (or somewhere else that it won't do any harm) create a link to the draft that you want to create, like this Draft:Xyzabc. Then click on that link. That'll take you to a page titled "Creating Draft:Xyzabc". Type something in the larfge edit box, and click "Publish page". You've created a draft. Now you can delete the link to it if you like, the draft'll still be there. Maproom (talk) 22:13, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Was Kisevalter Nash? specifically for you I would start creating a draft by clicking Was Kisevalter Nash/sandbox and publishing your content there. When you think your article is ready for review, you can follow the instructions at Wikipedia:So you made a userspace draft ~ 🦝 Shushugah (he/him • talk) 00:14, 31 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

How to find vandalism quickly[edit]

I'm trying to find vandalism quickly, and recent changes isn't really helping, is there another way? Vamsi20 (talk) 21:52, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Vamsi20 I think there is a vandalism bot that helps moderate vandalism. Wolfquack (talk) 22:02, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
what's the name of it? Vamsi20 (talk) 22:03, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

:::@Vamsi20 I don’t actually know unfortunately, but I know it’s kind of like cluebot. Sorry ):, maybe a more experienced editor can help with this. Wolfquack (talk) 22:07, 30 March 2023 (UTC) Reply[reply]

@Vamsi20 Actually it is User:ClueBot NG. The bot helps revert edits. Wolfquack (talk) 22:08, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
(As in vandals of course) Wolfquack (talk) 22:09, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
ClueBot NG is an anti-vandalism bot that tries to detect and revert vandalism quickly and automatically. Wolfquack (talk) 22:11, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Trying to find vandalism quickly is not always a useful pursuit. All vandalism goes through recent changes, so you may need to fine tune what you're looking at. You may want to install WP:POPUPS to speed up what you're doing. New users are a frequent source; check out any blue links at Special:Log/newusers. You can also try Special:AbuseLog. There's a few extra tools listed at Wikipedia:Cleaning_up_vandalism/Tools. I'm not vouching for any of them as I don't use them. But just follow some vandals around for a while and you'll probably find more vandalism. -- zzuuzz (talk) 22:18, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Way to view most recent articles?[edit]

Does anybody know if there is a way to see the most recently created articles? Or maybe some shortcut to said page? Thanks. 🍻 Wolfquack (talk) 22:01, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Special:NewPages and/or Special:NewPagesFeed. -- zzuuzz (talk) 22:21, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Zzuuzz Thank you *tips hat* Wolfquack (talk) 22:25, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Uploading images[edit]

Hi, I am an experienced Wikipedian, but I don't know much about images and licensing. Am I allowed to upload the image from https://www.statista.com/chart/16959/share-of-the-internet-that-is-porn/ ? It is CC BY-ND (c) 2019 StatistaCharts. Wikimedia Commons does not allow such images. tgeorgescu (talk) 22:27, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Tgeorgescu no in short, because of the ND part which means No Derivatives, but all Wiki content expressly allows remixing. The only way you could upload an image to English Wikipedia where it wouldn't be allowed in Commons is if WP:FAIRUSE applied, but that doesn't here. Happy licensing! ~ 🦝 Shushugah (he/him • talk) 23:00, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Wiki page picture for author[edit]

I would like to update the picture of an Author on their Wiki Page.

The picture notes the copyright symbol and photographer's name.

Am I allowed to upload it to the page and use it? LisaPSinger (talk) 22:27, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@LisaPSinger: Only if you own the copyright or if the person who owns the copyright will donate it to Wikipedia. In that case you or them have to fill a nasty form for the Volunteer Response Team. Almost nobody can fill the form right, so their pictures get deleted. tgeorgescu (talk) 22:54, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'd rephrase that as "You can upload it to Wikimedia Commons only if either (A) you own the copyright or (B) the person who owns the copyright will either (i) copyleft it in a way that's acceptable to Wikimedia Commons or (ii) will waive all their rights to it, donating it to the public domain. In case (B), the copyright owner has to contact the Volunteer Response Team." (Although perhaps somebody else here will correct me.) -- Hoary (talk) 22:54, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Account not signing in[edit]

Hello Im LegoFanXtreme. My accounts not letting me sign in 2601:5CB:C002:87B0:ACA2:681F:8488:36E (talk) 22:40, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Your account is not blocked. Try to recover its password or begin to use another account, e.g. LegoFanXtreme2. But do not use two accounts in combination, that leads to both accounts getting blocked. tgeorgescu (talk) 22:50, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Creating my user page[edit]

Hello everyone at the teahouse, need a little on my user page Leoosi777 (talk) 23:02, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Leoosi777 welcome to Teahouse! See Wikipedia:User pages for guidelines on what your User page can have. I would recommend making constructive edits first before worrying about your user page. You can always responsibly copy snippets from other people's userpages and tinker with them. Happy editing! ~ 🦝 Shushugah (he/him • talk) 23:08, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Okay great, thanks Shushugah Leoosi777 (talk) 23:16, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Citing sources from Wikipedia Library[edit]

When providing an inline source obtained via Wikipedia Library I'm not sure whether to provide the URL, so have just been stating via, for example - Gale OneFile and not providing a URL link.

Take this citation URL as an example. link.gale.com/apps/doc/A698855619/STND?u=wikipedia&sid=bookmark-STND&xid=33d78588

Should I:

a) include the URL as is?

b) amend part of the URL? If so, what.

c) include the link but don't change anything and let users who run Citation Bot make any necessary adjustment?

d) don't include the link at all?

Also, should I be acknowledging Wikipedia Library in the 'via' field along with Gale? Rupples (talk) 00:17, 31 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Rupples Welcome to Teahouse! I would amend the url to be as simple and as succinct possible. Usually the ISSN, DOI and other core identifiers are the most important aspects. If it has a Journal/Newspaper name, then the publisher is not that important. No need to reference WP:WMF at all. ~ 🦝 Shushugah (he/him • talk) 00:28, 31 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
You can remove the part including and after ?u= and the URL should still be fine for those who have access. 0xDeadbeef→∞ (talk to me) 00:29, 31 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That's great! Thanks to both. Rupples (talk) 00:44, 31 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

How to create subpage[edit]

I want to create a subpage from my user page, but, quite simply, how do I do it? Is there some sort of form I need to fill out or something? Something to do with the sandbox? Please help.

AugustusAudax (talk) 01:12, 31 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi AugustusAudax. User subpages can be created in the same ways as other pages. See Wikipedia:How to create a page for several methods. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:26, 31 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

How do I find the draft I was still working on?[edit]

I published the draft I was still working on about Tennent H. "Pete" Bagley and then, having gotten a little "burnt out," I logged out of Wikipedia. Is that draft gone forever, now, or can I still access it and continue working on it? Thanks. Was Kisevalter Nash? (talk) 01:15, 31 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I just found it. Draft:Tennent H. "Pete" Bagley I think you need to put a second closing curly bracket at the end of what I guess is supposed to be an Infobox. Uporządnicki (talk) 01:37, 31 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
And I'd rephrase the bit about how his nickname "suck" (sic) with him. Uporządnicki (talk) 01:45, 31 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks!
Will do (LOL).
Speaking of the "Inbox," I keep getting a big red error message that I haven't formatted his birth date correctly.
Any suggestions? Was Kisevalter Nash? (talk) 02:07, 31 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Also, how do I get back to my draft where it's displayed in its formatting and editing mode so I can add that curly bracket, etc, etc.?
Thanks. Was Kisevalter Nash? (talk) 02:16, 31 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Was Kisevalter Nash?: If you're in visual editing mode, you can click on the OOjs UI icon edit-ltr.svg icon in the top toolbar to open a dropdown menu, then click Source editing. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 02:43, 31 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Article Drafts[edit]

How do I access my draft articles? 2600:1700:BAD0:A30:8976:5D2D:91E3:D69C (talk) 04:22, 31 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The best way is to log into your account (if you have one) and look at your contribution history. Otherwise, you need to remember what title you used. The title would be of the form "Draft:Title of draft". ~Anachronist (talk) 04:29, 31 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
