Ohio () is a state in the Midwestern United States . Of the fifty U.S. states , it is the 34th-largest by area . With a population of nearly 11.8 million, Ohio is the seventh-most populous and tenth-most densely populated state . Its capital and largest city is Columbus , with the Columbus metro area , Greater Cincinnati , and Greater Cleveland being the largest metropolitan areas . Ohio is bordered by Lake Erie to the north, Pennsylvania to the east, West Virginia to the southeast, Kentucky to the southwest, Indiana to the west, and Michigan to the northwest. Ohio is nicknamed the "Buckeye State" after its Ohio buckeye trees , and Ohioans are also known as "Buckeyes". Its state flag is the only non-rectangular flag of all the U.S. states.
Ohio takes its name from the Ohio River , which, in turn, originated from the Seneca word ohiːyo' , meaning "good river", "great river", or "large creek". The state arose from the lands west of the Appalachian Mountains that were contested from colonial times through the Northwest Indian Wars of the late 18th century. It was partitioned from the resulting Northwest Territory , which was the first frontier of the new United States, becoming the 17th state admitted to the Union on March 1, 1803, and the first under the Northwest Ordinance . Ohio was the first post-colonial free state admitted to the union and became one of the earliest and most influential industrial powerhouses during the 20th century. Although it has transitioned to a more information- and service-based economy in the 21st century, it remains an industrial state, ranking seventh in GDP , with the third-largest manufacturing sector and second-largest automobile production.
The government of Ohio is composed of the executive branch, led by the governor ; the legislative branch, consisting of the bicameral Ohio General Assembly ; and the judicial branch, led by the state Supreme Court . Ohio occupies 16 seats in the United States House of Representatives . The state is known for its status as both a swing state and a bellwether in national elections. Seven presidents of the United States have come from Ohio . This has led to it receiving the moniker "the Mother of Presidents". (Full article... )

The McKinley Birthplace Memorial gold dollar was a commemorative coin struck by the United States Bureau of the Mint in 1916 and 1917, depicting the 25th President of the United States , William McKinley . The coin's obverse was designed by Charles E. Barber , Chief Engraver of the Mint, and the reverse by his assistant, George T. Morgan . As McKinley had appeared on a version of the 1903-dated Louisiana Purchase Exposition dollar , the 1916 release made him the first person to appear on two issues of U.S. coins.
The coins were to be sold at a premium to finance the
National McKinley Birthplace Memorial at
Niles, Ohio , and were vended by the group constructing it. The issue was originally proposed as a silver dollar; this was changed when it was realized it would not be appropriate to honor a president who had supported the
gold standard with such a piece. The coins were poorly promoted, and did not sell well. Despite an authorized mintage of 100,000, only about 30,000 were minted. Of these, 20,000 were sold, many of these at a reduced price to Texas coin dealer
B. Max Mehl . The remaining 10,000 pieces were returned to the Mint for melting. (

This is a Good article , an article that meets a core set of high editorial standards.
The Ohio Burgee is the official flag of the U.S. state of Ohio . It is a triangular swallowtail flag, the only non-rectangular U.S. state flag . Its red, white, and blue elements symbolize the state's natural features and order of admission into the Union. A prominent disc in the flag's triangular canton is suggestive of the state's name. This flag was adopted in 1945.
The flag was designed in 1901 by John Eisenmann for the Pan-American Exposition and adopted in 1902. Before that, for nearly a century after statehood, Ohio did not have a legally authorized state flag. One unsuccessful proposal had called for a design based on the state seal .
Ohio has adopted an official salute to the flag and the official folding procedure gives it 17 folds. The Ohio flag has influenced a number of logos and municipal flags within the state. A scarlet-colored
gubernatorial flag is based on the state seal. (
