Board of Education

The Trustees of the Napa County Board of Education provide leadership to support the success of public education. They collaborate with the Superintendent to govern the County Office. Their responsibilities include assuring appropriate educational environments and curricula for students, approving the office’s budget and acquisitions of real property, and determining the salary of the County Superintendent of Schools. Trustees serve as an appellate panel in areas such as denials of student inter-district transfers, expulsions, and denials of charter school petitions. They also serve as the County Committee on School District Reorganization with approval authority in respect to all proposed changes of school district boundaries.

Regular board meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month in the Conference Room of the Napa County Office of Education. Occasionally meetings are held at school sites around Napa County, so please call to verify time and location. 707.253.6810.

Every ten years, public agencies use new data from the United States Census to redraw the district lines of elected representatives to reflect how local populations have changed. The Napa County Board of Education will be participating in this process in 2021 along with other local public agencies.

District lines must be adjusted to make sure each district has as equal a population as possible. Other criteria for consideration include the cohesiveness, contiguity, and compactness of the district territory, and addressing communities of interest. The Napa County Board of Trustees is working with the County and other Napa agencies to provide maximum opportunity for public engagement in this decennial process.

Workshops allowing for community participation in this process will be scheduled and posted on this web page. We will be utilizing an online mapping tool, DistricR, which will allow interested members of the public to suggest possible district boundaries.

January 4, 2022, 3:30 p.m. Napa County Board of Education public hearing on proposed district maps. Completed.

February 1, 2022, 3:30 p.m. Napa County Board of Education public hearing on proposed final district maps, followed by action to adopt new district maps. Completed.

TBD before March 30, 2022, Napa County Committee on School District Organization action to approve new district maps for the Napa County Board of Education, the Napa Valley College Board, and the Napa Valley Unified School District Board.

NOTE: The Fair Maps Act does not create new requirements for County Office of Education redistricting, however it does provide some best practices for public outreach and a process for ensuring an open and transparent redistricting.
