Few authors are better prepared to write about fatherhood than John C. Carr, a social worker and psychotherapist who understands the psychological development of both infants and men. And, as a dad of three, he's on the front lines of fathering.
Carr covers not only practical “how-tos,” but also the more elusive, emotional side of being a father. Plus, he discusses the crucial impact a father's presence has on his child-and why he should be present right from the start.
Men will find reassurance, as well as the insights and skills needed to manage work, family expectations, and their own needs as they adapt to their new role.

Once again John Carr provides an outstanding, collaborative and personal first-hand guide to Becoming a New Dad. John's observations, his advice, and his stories are inspirational at every turn. He has a wonderful, down to earth way of conveying the importance and responsibilities Dad's can play in their child's life. John's book is must for Dads 'to-be' and families looking to uncover all the possibilities involved in early parenting. I found his approach and guidance to be exceptionally reassuring to me. My guess is that John's experience in writing this book, and his own courage and desire to work at being the Dad he's wanted to become, has proved a mutually fulfilling journey for John; and now for his readers. I look forward to John's next book and his next journey into the years that follow.

What I appreciate about this book is that it is comprehensive. It doesn't approach fatherhood as a "Do what your wife tells you to" while still talking about your role in helping your expectant partner. It presents different sides and thoughts without judgement.

So much out there seems to tell fathers that they need to be this way or do this a certain way. This book does not. It asks some good questions and presents great information. Having looked through a lot of other expectant dad books as well as parenting books this one has proven to be the best so far. It gives you the information you need in a way that helps prepare you to be the father you want to be and not the one someone else thinks you should be.

Father of child is in boot camp and thoroughly enjoys this book. He says they provide lots of detail and he isn’t even bored while reading it either during this covid-19 crisis mess that’s out a hault in routine for the country/everyone everywhere universally. He feels like he is putting in his part at home with me preparing for the baby while reading this book that leaves him well informed and confident.

I purchased this book for my husband and so far he seems to not mind it. Its pretty straight forward and from the sections I've read, as well as what my husband has said, the book offers some fairly reasonable suggestions on "becoming a dad", or parent in general. I like how simple many of the sections are, compared to many of the "for mom" books out there. I would recommend this book to other readers.

My husband has read almost the entire book already and actually enjoys reading it! After sharing with me a few of the things he has read, I wanted to read it too! As a Psych major I really appreciate that the author is an LCSW. The author focuses on developmental stages and how to appropriately and lovingly respond to these different stages and behaviors. I also appreciate how the author speaks to soon-to-be-fathers in a realistic and non-judgmental tone. Many other books that I looked into spoke as though being a father was a chore and that men have to "deal" with their wives as they go through pregnancy. However, this book approaches pregnancy and fatherhood as a loving partnership between two parents raising their child.

The main reason I am writing this review is because I think people should know that throughout this book the author has the person reflect on their own fathers child-raising practices. This is fine for most people; however, my husband's father died when his mother was pregnant and didn' remarry until he was much older. Therefore, it is not relevant for him and just keeps reminding him that he doesn't have any memories to reflect back on. I just think that this should be mentioned in case there are other people with similar situations through death or divorce or maybe someone who really dislikes their father. Otherwise, I think the book provides an overview that is just a little too general, but okay for a very basic introductory to different subjects.

I bought this book for my son-in-law as my daughter is going to have a baby in a couple weeks. I haven't asked him how he liked it, but I paged through it before I gave it to him and thought it was quite informative!

This book has it all -- answers to all the practical, financial, relationship and even emotional challenges that a man faces when he becomes a Dad. It gives lots of helpful information in bite sized chunks, with comments and insights from lots of real life Dads. Talks about how to play with your infant, discipline, anger, and other important topics. Written by a trained psychotherapist -- who's also a Little League coach, Dad of three and uncle of 27 -- the book helps Dads navigate the sometimes choppy waters of identity and purpose in this life-changing transition from "guy" to "daddy."
