The Body Remembers: The Psychophysiology of Trauma and Trauma Treatment (Norton Professional Book) Hardcover – Illustrated, October 17, 2000
Purchase options and add-ons
For both clinicians and their clients there is tremendous value in understanding the psychophysiology of trauma and knowing what to do about its manifestations.
This book illuminates that physiology, shining a bright light on the impact of trauma on the body and the phenomenon of somatic memory. It is now thought that people who have been traumatized hold an implicit memory of traumatic events in their brains and bodies. That memory is often expressed in the symptomatology of posttraumatic stress disorder-nightmares, flashbacks, startle responses, and dissociative behaviors. In essence, the body of the traumatized individual refuses to be ignored.
While reducing the chasm between scientific theory and clinical practice and bridging the gap between talk therapy and body therapy, Rothschild presents principles and non-touch techniques for giving the body its due. With an eye to its relevance for clinicians, she consolidates current knowledge about the psychobiology of the stress response both in normally challenging situations and during extreme and prolonged trauma. This gives clinicians from all disciplines a foundation for speculating about the origins of their clients' symptoms and incorporating regard for the body into their practice. The somatic techniques are chosen with an eye to making trauma therapy safer while increasing mind-body integration.
Packed with engaging case studies, The Body Remembers integrates body and mind in the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder. It will appeal to clinicians, researchers, students, and general readers.

"Babette Rothschild has produced a masterful book! This text should be required reading for all therapists, particularly those engaged in trauma work. . . . [A] clear pacesetter in integrating the physiological and psychological dimensions of emotions and the use of such knowledge in the therapeutic process. I hope this pioneer author continues her excellent work. "

Before reading, my only exposure to body awareness had been through meditative practices. It has been an illuminating experience to learn about the mind and body from this trauma therapeutic perspective. It has given me a stronger western theoretical foundation and vocabulary in understanding myself and my close friends and relatives who have experienced traumas.
I particularly appreciated Ch 3 on somatic memory. It surveys the history or mind-body studies and sets up a framework for understanding emotions as bodily sensations (affect), conscious experience (feeling), and memories. This framework is used to understand how trauma can be remembered in the physical body.
I also appreciated Ch 6: The Body as Resource. It offered practices to bring awareness into the body that I found myself doing as I read the book.
Rothschild does a fantastic job at presenting this material with enough background for a general audience. It was a pleasure to read, yet also had the academic rigor and pragmatic advice of a practitioner in the field.
I gained so much information and so many valuable tools through this text, it is written in, dog-eared and well used! I would recommend this book to anyone working with clients that experience PTSD, body image issues or a history of trauma.
1) the writing is clear, concise and easy to understand.
2) this book is a fantastic intro to a very complex field of study and once you have the basics down, reading other more complex material is easier.
3) I found the techniques to be very useful with clients who have PTSD( tried and tested them)
Overall, I have read this book easily and quickly and found the techniques easy to apply and useful. I would def. buy this and give it a read.

Babette Rothschild uses accessible language to explain really complex terms; her writing is really easy to understand and she enriches the text with case studies and examples from her own professional experience of helping people to overcome the debilitating effects of trauma and PTSD.
I would only caution those readers who find it very difficult to grasp neuroscience concepts- I am inclined towards neuroscience and therefore found it quite easy to follow the text. It is made easier by diagrams and explanatory notes; however if you are really struggling with these terms, you might find the book slightly more challenging than you expected.
Either way however, I would still recommend it, whether you are a professional working with traumatised people, or if a loved one has survived trauma. It will give you a great insight into their experience and how to best support them.
