Calculate & remove

Explore your carbon footprint, then take climate action by removing it, permanently.

A climate-positive world

Since the Industrial Revolution, the level of CO₂ in the air has increased drastically, and this excess carbon is the number one cause of climate change. With carbon dioxide removal, we can remove legacy CO₂ emissions from the air and put them back in the ground where they can no longer contribute to global warming.

Help us on our mission to a climate-positive world by reducing your carbon footprint, and removing unavoidable and historic emissions from the air. You can become a Climate Pioneer by removing CO₂ for yourself or by giving an eco-conscious gift to a loved one.

What we do

Climeworks uses a technology called 'direct air capture' to capture carbon dioxide directly from the air. When the removed CO₂ is combined with underground storage, it allows the permanent removal of excess and legacy CO₂ emissions, which can no longer contribute to climate change.

Machines

Our first direct air capture plant launched in 2017 and we now have 15 machines in operation, with the world’s first large-scale plant switched on in Iceland in September 2021.

Technology

Our machines consist of modular CO₂ collectors which selectively capture carbon dioxide in a two-step process. The CO₂ captured can either be stored or reused as a raw material.

Storage

Once the CO₂ is captured, it can be permanently and safely turned into stone through rapid mineralization which is a natural occurrence where the CO₂ reacts with basalt rock.

How you can make an impact

When you become a  Climate Pioneer, you enable us to operate and construct large-scale direct air capture and storage so we can permanently remove CO₂ from the air. Scaling CO₂ removal capacity is urgently needed to achieve net zero global emissions. With your contribution, we can keep working toward this goal, and you can have an individual impact on the climate by removing CO₂ from the air.

Frequently asked questions

How does the climate action plan work?
With the climate action plan, you choose to remove CO₂ on a regular basis, either monthly or yearly. You can set it up as follows:

  • Choose your CO₂ amount: you can either choose a preset amount of CO₂ that you’d like us to remove in your name or tell us your own custom amount.
  • Select a monthly or annual plan: you can decide how frequently you’d like to pay, either monthly or annually
  • Cancel any time: there are no strings attached. You can cancel your subscription any time.

Do I get some sort of certificate?

  • Yes, you do! You’ll find your CO₂ removal order confirmation in your account as a PDF document. Here we state the amount of carbon dioxide ordered in your name. No one else can stake a claim to that amount.

How long does it take you to remove the CO₂?

  • In line with our plants' operation schedules, CO₂ removal orders are carried out within 6 years. That means 6 years from your one-off order or 6 years from each monthly subscription order.

Can I deduct the subscription from tax?

  • Unfortunately, no. The purchase of Climeworks’ carbon dioxide removal services isn’t tax-deductible as a donation because Climeworks provides a service in return for payment and isn’t a charitable organization.
