Re-engineering chemical production for Carbon Dioxide Removal
Our proprietary electrochemical process permanently converts carbon dioxide into a mineral while simultaneously producing sulfuric acid–the world’s most produced chemical–for use in critical element extraction and fertilizer production.
A practical approach for climate-smart critical resources
Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) is an essential part of the solution to climate change. To make it work, CDR solutions must be scaleable to gigatons per year, energy efficient, and economical. Leveraging the scale of our largest industries offers a practical path to help heal the planet and protect human health.
Travertine was founded by UC Berkeley Professor Laura Lammers, a world expert in carbonate mineralization, to reduce the environmental impact of extracting elements that are needed for the renewable energy transition.
Technology
Our process enhances Earth’s natural weathering cycle to convert carbon dioxide into carbonate minerals.
Applications
We are partnering with industries to reduce their environmental footprint while pushing forward the renewable energy transition.
Our aim is to help mining and fertilizer companies meet their ambitious goals for reducing carbon emissions and waste.
Carbon Dioxide Removal
Every application of our technology combines Carbon Dioxide Removal with other environmental and industry benefits.
-
Mining
Travertine is partnering with mining companies to produce carbon-negative sulfuric acid for use in extracting critical elements such as lithium, nickel, and cobalt. Our process can recycle and reuse sulfate waste to reduce cost and potential water contamination.
-
Fertilizer
Travertine is partnering with fertilizer producers to recycle phosphogypsum (PG) waste and make salable products including sulfuric acid, hydrogen, oxygen and carbonate minerals. Our process can reduce the cost of managing PG while upcycling gypsum for beneficial reuse.
