Editing[edit]

I am trying to edit the article on Frederick R. Lehlbach. His spouse should be listed as Frances Marten but is incorrectly listed as Anna Adele Doremus. Anna Adele Doremus is my grandmother and was married to Frederick A. Lehlbach, cousin of Frederick R. Lehlbach. The two men are often confused, including in published materials and on the internet. I cannot simply make the change without disrupting references cited in the article. The cited reference is incorrect. Potterj08551 (talk) 00:17, 5 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

hi @Potterj08551 and welcome to Wikipedia! upon reviewing the source attached to it, this edit is clock In progress. 💜  melecie  talk - 01:44, 5 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
yellow tickY Partly done. Anna is no longer referred to as Frederick R's spouse since the source stated that she married Frederick A. you can bring up Frances being his spouse in an edit request in the talk page of the article, in this case Talk:Frederick R. Lehlbach, as long as you have reliable sources like historical articles to back up this claim. you may also edit the article directly, but due to your situation being related to them this may be discouraged. happy editing! 💜  melecie  talk - 01:54, 5 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Looking for most verifiable citations[edit]

I was using IMDb links, but it sounds like those aren't acceptable, but I also tried direct links to the film festival websites where it documents the awards for the film, but it appears those might not be acceptable, either. What is the best way to show verification of the festivals and awards? Thank you for any help you can provide. I greatly appreciate it. Bequebmemory (talk) 02:52, 5 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Bequebmemory: It seems to me that the festival websites are primary sources, which means that they can be used, but must be used with care: see WP:PRIMARY. In particular, they can ordinarily be used to verify non-contriversial facts about themselves, and they cannot be used to establish notability. I'm not sure about our community consensus here, so I suggest you ask at Wikipedia:WikiProject Film. -Arch dude (talk) 03:18, 5 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Bequebmemory: As IMDb can be edited by anyone the information there isn't reliable to be used here, however the websites themselves should be able to be used as a source, as above ask at the WikiProject Film as there'll be editors who can potentially help you with your query. StarryNightSky11  03:21, 5 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you so much for your response. I tried linking directly to the film's site, but maybe I can put several citations there (to the festivals that list the awards)? I will do more research. Thank you for your help Bequebmemory (talk) 03:23, 5 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Upload pic[edit]

I have not been able to upload a picture on an article. Every time I try it gives me an error. This is a normal JPEG pic of a person. Help! Philosophymaybe (talk) 14:12, 5 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Philosophymaybe The pictures used in articles are stored in Wikimedia Commons or, if WP:NONFREE, here on the English Wikipedia. Where did your image come from? If it was taken by you using your own camera, then you should have no issues uploading it at commons:Special:UploadWizard, taking the defaults to license it for everyone to use. Note that you must not upload images you happen to have found somewhere, for example on the Internet, as you do not own the copyright. If you run into further difficulties and have read WP:PIC for advice, come back here to the Help desk, giving full details. Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:27, 5 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Philosophymaybe Incidentally, if the photo is to be used in your draft Draft:Carlo Alvaro, I would wait until the article is accepted before adding it. As it stands, there is zero chance of the draft passing review, since every one of its sources is authored by Alvaro or his university, so not acceptable to show he is notable in the sense Wikipedia uses that word. Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:34, 5 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I am not sure what you are talking about. I reviewed other Wikipedia entries and they are exactly the same. They talk about a person and all the citations are of those persons' own work or from their respective universities. I am confused. Philosophymaybe (talk) 15:08, 5 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Philosophymaybe I am talking about a core principle of Wikipedia, stated at WP:42. Biographies may certainly mention the work someone has done and the publications they have produced but they cannot be based solely on that material. If you have found another article that is restricted like that, then please link it here as it should almost certainly be deleted. Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:20, 5 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Michael D. Turnbull @Philosophymaybe there are some exceptions to the independent/secondary requirement, for example WP:NPROF, because in order to be a Professor, your work must be peer reviewed by others. I am not sure Draft:Carlo Alvaro qualified under that, but worth mentioning. Agreed not to focus on images until article is approved. Primarily sources can be used, but in most cases are not sufficient for establishing notability. ~ 🦝 Shushugah (he/him • talk) 17:47, 5 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Definitely an improvement, Thelisteninghand. I moved it again to get the dash style right. You may want to read over that guideline if you're going to move more pages with year ranges in the titles. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 21:07, 5 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

International Democrat Union[edit]

Hello me and another user has been changing each other's edits. On this page. They presume the US member party is the Democratic Party due to the name of the organization being the International Democrat Union. The article until they changed it has always had the Republican Party as the member of party which is backed up by the official website of the organization. www.idu.org/members and you have to click on the United States, and you will see the Republican party as the member. Also, the user fool language in the conversation. 216.198.191.242 (talk) 21:23, 5 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

How many games for a franchise[edit]

I'm playing a video game sires, I expect you to die. Currently it has 2 games with one smaller free game. They confirmed they would come out with a 3rd game so how many games would they have to make for a page to be made about the franchise? LuxembourgLover (talk) 22:56, 5 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

There appears to be articles already about some of the games, the one you have linked to and a sequel StarryNightSky11  01:40, 6 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
As far as Wikipedia is concerned, it doesn't make any difference whether they have one game or a thousand. What matters is whether people unconnected with them have written about them in reliable sources. See notability. ColinFine (talk) 11:33, 6 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The general rule of thumb for video games is at least three things eg three titles or two games and a film spin-off. But above that, good quality reliable sourcing is the main thing and don't make it just an edited highlights version of the other articles, it needs to stand on its own. WT:VG is the best place to seek advice.- X201 (talk) 12:34, 6 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Passing of time[edit]

Does time ever factor into COIs and the Independence of a source? For instance, if I worked somewhere ten years ago do I still have a COI? Similarly, if someone worked for a newspaper ten years ago and now the newspaper wrote an article about that person would the source be independent? I don't feel like WP:COI or WP:INDEPENDENT really address this, but maybe I'm missing it. If someone could cite a policy or guideline that clearly indicates one way or the other I'd appreciate it. Personally, I would assume that once a COI, always a COI. However, that very well could be wrong. TipsyElephant (talk) 23:58, 5 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@TipsyElephant: My personal opinion, not policy. First, COI is a continuum, not a yes/no. For example, we don't consider US residents to have a COI with respect to the US. Second, actual COI is a state of mind of the editor and is only loosely correlated with formal associations to the subject. You have a COI if you think or know that you might not be objective about a subject. So, If you have a long-ago association with a subject or only a tenuous association, then state this on your talk page and make a declaration that you do not feel that you are a biased editor on that subject. Others can decide. -Arch dude (talk) 00:52, 6 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Write an Article on Felix (singer)[edit]

I would like to request someone to write an article for Lee Felix, a member of Stray Kids. I am new to Wikipedia, so I need to practice editing before I publish any pages. I have worked on something, but I do not think it can be viewed publicly yet. I started with en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Felix_(singer) and I will need someone to do their research to fulfill this new page. Flame, not lame (talk) 23:59, 5 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Flame, not lame, there is no article titled Felix (singer) and it doesn't appear that there has ever been one. Ditto for Lee Felix (singer). You have written about this fellow in User:Flame, not lame/sandbox. This has a long way to go before it has a chance of becoming an article. Do reliable sources discuss him in depth? If so, please provide links to what you consider the three best among these. (Do it here, in this Help Desk thread.) Then others here will be able to evaluate them for you. If such sources don't exist, no article can be written by anyone. If you hope that others will find the sources for you, that's probably not going to happen: Other people tend to be occupied by whatever happen to be their own interests. -- Hoary (talk) 00:19, 6 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yes, there are reliable sources for this person. I cited two sources so far. I am not sure how many people who are familiar with Stray Kids are active on Wikipedia.
I used these two resources, as cited in the article I have been working on:
https://stray-kids.fandom.com/wiki/Felix
https://www.thefamouspeople.com/profiles/lee-felix-43052.php
I have considered fandom websites are not always accurate. Lee Felix, Lee Felix (singer), and Felix Lee would also be acceptable titles for his Wikipedia page. This person's Korean alias is Lee Yong-bok.
Here is a third website I came across but have not used or sited for my practice page yet:
https://biographyline.com/lee-felix-biography-age-profession-affair-wealth/
Basic information about Felix:
Lee Felix, commonly referred to mononymously as Felix, is an Australia singer, dancer, and rapper from the K-pop boy band Stray Kids. He was born on September 15th, 2000 in Sydney, Australia. He is popularly recognized for his uncommonly low voice. Flame, not lame (talk) 23:35, 6 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@User:Flame, not lame:
  • ☒N Stray Kids FANDOM wiki: Wikis are user-generated and do not make for reliable sources.
  • ☒N Thefamouspeople.com: Taking a look at their "About us" page:

We consider that the wisdom of the crowd is better than the wisdom of few experts. Our lists are based on a wide spectrum of opinion—including the insights given by our audience and the latest social media trends. This data is then filtered by our intelligent technology which helps churn out the most definitive and credible rankings.

Appears to be user-dependent, so most likely user-generated.
  • Question? Biography Line: An earlier RSN discussion has called it a junk scraper [site] (biographyline.com, celebsblurb.com), so it leans toward being unreliable.

Question[edit]

When a page has been moved on Wikipedia, is there anyway to change the redirect that 100 articles will now have on their pages, to the new page. is there a tool to do this rather than attempting to do it manually. (which I won't try manually) Aaron106 (talk) 00:16, 6 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Question about first-person plural pronouns[edit]

Let's say there's a sentence with a phrase like "the film changed how we view cinematic narratives". Could anyone please tell me how one would change "we" to something in the third person? Maybe "society" or "much of society"? Thylacine24 (talk) 03:53, 6 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello, Thylacine24. You need to read the reliable source that supports that statement, and re-write the content to summarize it in a neutral, encyclopedic fashion. Writing from the first person plural is not acceptable. Cullen328 (talk) 05:06, 6 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Cullen328: I've checked what I think is the source (the footnote isn't until later in the paragraph, though) and it seemed to mostly refer to "academics and feminists" as the people to whom "we" refers.--Thylacine24 (talk) 05:27, 6 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thylacine24, I am unfamiliar with the specific content issue, but as a general principle, we summarize the sources using neutral language. So, if the source devotes significant coverage to the topic, we summarize and cite that source. If reliable, independent sources do not mention the topic at all, then there is no good reason to mention it anywhere on Wikipedia. Cullen328 (talk) 07:11, 6 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The issue seems to be that the source uses "we" in a sort of broad group that the author is a part of, presumably something like (western) feminist film scholars or something like that but this isn’t explicitly stated. They're looking for the best way to summarize a source. @Thylacine24: what’s the source (and page) in question? Umimmak (talk) 07:21, 6 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Umimmak: It's not actually a film at all, but a reference to a scholarly article by Linda Nochlin, in this section of her page.--Thylacine24 (talk) 13:29, 6 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Thylacine24 Just invert it: the film changed how cinematic narratives are viewed. Bazza (talk) 09:32, 6 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Bazza 7, your proposed change seems to indicate that "how cinematic narratives are viewed" has (have?) been changed for everyone, which seems to be different than what the source says.
How about making the source explicit: "According to (whomever), the film changed how cinematic narratives are viewed by [some?] feminist film scholars" or something similar. Then the inline citation. David10244 (talk) 10:11, 6 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@David10244 Strictly, I was considering only the original question (getting rid of "we"). My suggestion is accurate, though, even if less precise: regardless of whose view has been changed, there has been a change. @Thylacine24 didn't specify whether it was important to retain the specificity of the source, and even hinted that a wide interpretation ("much of society") could be required although, unless the sources suggest that, I'd steer clear of such an explicit widening and stay ambiguous. Bazza (talk) 10:38, 6 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Bazza 7 Thst makes sense. David10244 (talk) 03:55, 8 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Remove "thank" button from watchlist?[edit]

The "thank" button appears on my watchlist after every edit made by a logged-in user. Is it possible to remove the button from items on my watchlist? I don't mind seeing it after individual diffs but I would rather not see it on my watchlist. I read Help:Notifications/Thanks and [1] but they were no help. --Viennese Waltz 11:07, 6 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Viennese Waltz, if you post over at WP:VPT, someone there might be willing and able to create a custom css hack which will remove the button from your personal watchlist. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 16:29, 6 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Oh, so it's not something straightforward that would just involve me tweaking my preferences? That's, uh, a little disappointing. Thanks anyway. --Viennese Waltz 16:54, 6 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Viennese Waltz: You can add this to your CSS:
.mw-special-Watchlist .mw-thanks-thank-link {display: none;}
It doesn't remove parentheses around the link. If you want to remove them then you have to remove everything inside the parentheses
.mw-special-Watchlist .mw-pager-tools {display: none;}
There may be other links there. I have rollback links. PrimeHunter (talk) 17:31, 6 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

changing citation and date formats?[edit]

@Jindam vani, there were no bare web addresses displayed in the article when you made those changes. It is not necessary to use citation templates for sources, and changing to templates in an article that was not written using them is an example of violating WP:CITEVAR, "Editors should not attempt to change an article's established citation style". Creating Profile[edit]

How do you go about creating a profile of yourself or does someone else have to create that? Valachu (talk) 16:48, 6 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Valachu Wikipedia does not have profiles, not a single one; Wikipedia has articles about topics that meet the special Wikipedia definition of notability(such as a notable person) as shown with significant coverage in independent reliable sources. Autobiographical articles, while not forbidden, are highly discouraged, in part because people naturally write favorably about themselves, and have difficulty summarizing what others say about them while setting aside what they know about themselves. Please read the autobiography policy. If you truly feel you meet the definition of a notable person, and can write as required, you may create a draft at Articles for Creation.
You could also be referring to your user page, which is a place you can tell about yourself as a Wikipedia user only(not anything and everything about yourself). Your user page is as User:Valachu. 331dot (talk) 16:52, 6 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Twinkle "follow site preferences" option for watchlist time[edit]

I recently started using WP:TW for features that aren't in WP:RW. When changing the settings, I noticed the titular option. What does this mean? How do I change this site preference? Aaron Liu (talk) 02:14, 7 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

You can visit [2] to adjust your preferences for Twinkle which apply to your account only. StarryNightSky11  03:03, 7 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I know that, that’s where I saw the option Aaron Liu (talk) 13:54, 7 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Aaron Liu: I think "follow site preferences" tells Twinkle to look at the Watchlist section of your preferences, where there are some checkboxes starting with "Add pages and files I edit to my watchlist" -- John of Reading (talk) 07:59, 7 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
There aren’t any options related to duration though.Aaron Liu (talk) 13:54, 7 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I understand it to mean that Twinkle will use whatever preference the wiki has allowed you to set or if the wiki doesn't offer you such an option in its preferences, whatever default the wiki has. In the case of watchlist durations, I think en.wiki defaults to perpetual. NebY (talk) 20:36, 7 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Adarsh rai[edit]

Adarsh rai was borned in (1923) he was the biggest businessman in INDIA in the British rule. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Adarsh rai bhumihar (talkcontribs) 04:20, 7 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

hi @Adarsh rai bhumihar and welcome to Wikipedia! do you have a question regarding it? if you are trying to make an article for yourself, we heavily do not recommend it, more information about this can be found at Autobiography but the short of that is we don't recommend it as it's hard to make one that is also neutral and verifiable by independent sources, which are required here. happy editing! 💜  melecie  talk - 04:31, 7 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I doubt that Adarsh rai bhumihar is claiming to be 99 years old. He is claiming that the biggest businessman in India in 1947 was aged only 24, which I find hard to believe. Maproom (talk) 08:13, 7 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Wrong age. Under Kurt Miller (baseball)[edit]

Wrong age. Under Kurt Miller (baseball) the age listed is 15. Should be 50. Can someone fix it? Foxygagnon (talk) 13:33, 7 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Posr articles[edit]

Hi I am zaidi and I want to know how can I post my articles in this site? Zaidi7600 (talk) 16:37, 7 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Zaidi7600: you may create an article on any notable subject, as we define notability: see WP:N. If your subject is not notable, your article cannot remain on Wikipedia and you will have wasted your effort and ours, so establishing notability is the very first thing you must do. We delete about 200 non-notable articles every day. After that, please see WP:YFA. -Arch dude (talk) 16:49, 7 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Zaidi7600, if your purpose is promoting (= "telling people about") soundtheropy.com, please choose a different site, as promotion is forbidden on Wikipedia. An article on soundtheropy is possible only if it meets Wikipedia's criteria for notability, which basically means that several people unconnected with the site have published significant coverage about it in reliable sources. If that is the case, then the article will be based on what those sources say about it (good or bad) not on what the proprietors say or want to say. Guideline on self-referencing links' section[edit]

I cannot find any guideline explicitly saying where to put related links to non-article pages (for articles that relate to a Wikipedia page itself, like United States congressional staff edits to Wikipedia and WP:Congressional staffer edits). WP:WAWI suggests that "if you link from an article to a specific Wikipedia page, use external link style, so the link will make sense in any context" in relation to link styling. Does this include the See also section, so it would go into External links/Further reading? If so, where is the guideline for this? I can't find it and I wanted to check before I added it into WP:WAWI and moved a link in the aforementioned article. Thanks. – Mullafacation {◌͜◌ talk} 17:16, 7 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

WP:WAWI covers discussions of Wikipedia articles within the prose of other Wikipedia articles. If I read you correctly, you're looking for the sort of guidance given in MOS:APPENDIX instead. XAM2175 (T) 02:08, 8 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks, that's it! It doesn't have anything about what I'm looking for, but that seems to be where the guidance should be, yes. – Mullafacation {◌͜◌ talk} 16:24, 8 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

My page Sulumbek of Sagopshi and Akhmed Khuchbarov[edit]

Hello, I don't really know how to explain but I would like to know how can I connect my pages "Sulumbek of Sagopshi" and "Akhmed Khuchbarov" with already existing russian pages "Сулумбек Сагопшинский" and "Хучбаров, Ахмед"? — Preceding unsigned comment added by WikiEditor1234567123 (talkcontribs) 17:21, 7 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I have merged the two Wikidata identities in each case. --David Biddulph (talk) 17:32, 7 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thanks alot David Biddulph. By the way if I have similar situation in future, do I always have to ask admin or is there a way that I can do it myself? — Preceding unsigned comment added by WikiEditor1234567123 (talkcontribs) 17:44, 7 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I'm not an admin, & see answer to your question below. - David Biddulph (talk) 18:09, 7 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Oh I also forgot, there's french page "Sulumbek Sagopshinsky", I would be glad if you could connect that one too with the "Sulumbek of Sagopshi" and "Сулумбек Сагопшинский". — Preceding unsigned comment added by WikiEditor1234567123 (talkcontribs) 17:47, 7 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Go to the Russian article, click on Wikidata item on the left hand menu to find the Wikidata ident (Q number), then go to the frwiki article, click on Wikidata item there, & from top "More" dropdown select "Merge with". - David Biddulph (talk) 18:13, 7 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

"This template has no documented parameters and may be intended for use without them."[edit]

Working on this infobox. This is my first time making an infobox, and when implementing it into an article, received this message when adding in parameters. CROIX (talk) 19:17, 7 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

It is because you did not define any parameters. Ruslik_Zero 20:12, 7 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
How do I define parameters? I did some looking around and could not find an answer. I'm assuming this is how you do it: {{Parameter names example|coordinates|population|established|area|timezone|location|
island|parish|dependency|majordivision|town|ed|
ethnicities|zone|districtcouncil|villagecouncil|localgovernment|
airport|heliport|elevation}}
CROIX (talk) 20:25, 7 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
You broke this Help page, by using that {{Parameter names example| template on it, so I fixed. If you want to refer to a template, either use the Template:parameter names example syntax, or wrap it in <nowiki> and </nowiki>, or (easiest in my view) use the template {{tl}} or {{tlx}}.
But if you look at {{Parameter names example}}, you'll see that that is about presenting parameter names in the documentation, not about programming the template. I've never done this, and I may be wrong, but my impression is that you need to go into editing the template, and then pick "Edit Template Data" and specify them there.
Alternatively, you could read WP:TDOC. ColinFine (talk) 20:43, 7 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@ColinFine, This page was still broken for me (the line did not wrap, so everything was tiny) so I added "br" tags. I hope that's OK. David10244 (talk) 06:33, 8 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@ColinFine While I was able to add the parameters, when I insert it into my sandbox page, the template now does not show up. For example, when I type in information into the "elevation" parameter, the elevation section does not show up on the infobox. CROIX (talk) 18:39, 8 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

About submit for draft[edit]

{{AfC submission|||ts=20230107195221|u=100.2.114.167|ns=4}} What does it do? How do you do it? How do use like submit about that draft before I have it transferred into a new person as Retired Lieutenant General Georgios Dritsakos of the Hellenic Air Force? Could you help me out in the details and I will create biography as a Greek Military person? 100.2.114.167 (talk) 19:52, 7 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

If you are asking how to create an article, you may do that via Articles for Creation. 331dot (talk) 20:00, 7 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Do not copy that template. It was generated for you when you added {{subst:submit}} to your original draft. You should therefore add {{subst:submit}} to your new draft. The "subst" operation does a lot of stuff like adding your submittal to the queue. -Arch dude (talk) 20:55, 7 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Editing[edit]

I attempted to edit the entry on my late brother John Kastner (film-maker, Toronto)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Kastner_(filmmaker) - but the edits were refused, possibly because I didn't enter the citations correctly. However, one edit was to try to remove a false link to an "official website" that actually links to a foreign porn site. Advice, please and thanks.Susiep00p00 (talk) 21:37, 7 January 2023 (UTC)susankastner:Reply[reply]

Template Assistance (Copy/Paste isn't working)[edit]

I'm having some difficulties getting Template:Infobox storm IF to work properly. I created it as a duplicate to Template:Infobox storm, except all the "EF" or "enhanced" (for the Enhanced Fujita scale) was replaced with "IF" or "international" for the International Fujita scale. Straight duplicate on every other factor. I then tried to use the template on 2021 South Moravia tornado, since that specific tornado was rated on the International Fujita scale (rather than the Fujita scale). I need assistance trying to make this work, because apparently, duplicating the original template and replacing the necessary links don't work. In the end, the infobox on 2021 South Moravia tornado should say IF4 at the top instead of F4 and it should wikilink to International Fujita scale, rather than the Fujita scale. Thanks in advance. Search on page belonging to two categories?[edit]

Is there a way to search for pages that belong to two categories? For example, the page belongs both to (random example) "Category:West Hmongic languages" and "Category:Languages of Laos". I'd expect that search to return a list of results which includes the page Hmong language, which belongs to both categories, but instead it returns "There were no results matching the query." Thisisnotatest (talk) 00:49, 8 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

incategory:"Languages of Laos" incategory:"West Hmongic languages" is the correct query. * Pppery * it has begun... 00:53, 8 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Thisisnotatest: The rendered page is searched by default so "Category:Languages of Laos" also gives no results. insource: searches the source text so insource:"Category:Languages of Laos" has results. It would have missed any cases where the category is added by templates or other special code, and it could give false positives if the text appeared for other reasons. incategory:"Languages of Laos" is the best method. It finds all cases and is efficient. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:20, 8 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

What the heck is this symbol?[edit]

I've been going through and copyediting / improving the quality of some random articles lately, one little issue I have stumbled upon along the way is this mysterious symbol, which only appears when you are editing the page, particularly in visual editor mode (?), and is not visible when in read mode.

The symbol looks like a "return arrow" or something you'd find on the enter key of a keyboard. Line goes down then left, arrowhead points to the left.

The symbol looks like this nevermind I can't even copy and paste it here.

So what does this symbol / "new line" arrow do? I guess it's safe to remove and replace with a normal line break that you type with enter key? AP 499D25 (talk) 08:19, 8 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Please link to the page so we can see what you are discussing. Meters (talk) 08:23, 8 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I think I may have figured out what it is -- if I find such symbol on a page while in visual editor mode and then switch to source editing, the place where that symbol was has a single line break. Indeed, if I put more single line breaks on the page and switch to visual editor again, wherever I put those new line breaks, have this "new line" character.
For an example of what the symbol looks like, take a look at this page revision, switch to visual editor mode, and look for "Quad-core APU – Kyoto (X2150)". Next to the four equal signs on the right but before the word "released", there's a strange looking 'down then left' arrow symbol. AP 499D25 (talk) 08:34, 8 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
If it's something that shows up on just one (or a few) pages then gives us an example. :If it's something that shows up in all the pages you edit then it probably is just the way Visual Editor displays a linefeed (I don't know because I don't use it) and you should leave it alone. Meters (talk) 08:29, 8 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@AP 499D25, @Meters: It's a new line character, often introduced when an editor copies text from elsewhere and pastes it in the article. Browsers usually convert it to a white space when articles are displayed for reading. If it annoys you, feel free to replace with a space. Bazza (talk) 10:11, 8 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Editing txt and sending photographs for inclusion where they don't exist.[edit]

Sirs I have been looking at Grade 2 listed building in the Lymington, New Forest area. There are several buildings which are either wrongly title with numbering, or do not have a photograph at all. I am in Lymington every day. I could take the4e pictures and send them to you with no trouble, and amend descriptors for some of the articles using memory. I have lived here for 60 years, and know every building in the High Street. I would be happy to contribute,BUT I AM NOT A COMPUTER WIZARD. THE EXISTING SYSTEM YOU HAVE IN PLACE IS A NIGHTMARE. IT IS EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE OF WHAT IT SHOULD BE. THE VAST MAJORITY OF PEOPLE WHO COULD CONTRIBUTE, LIKE ME, ARE COMPLETELY OUT OF OUR DEPTH AND FRIGHTENING. WE OLDIES HAVE POTENTIALLY A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT TO CONTRIBUTE TO WIKIPEDIA, BUT ARE THWARTED AT EVERY TURN. PLEASE CONSULT AND FIND AN EASIER WAY. 2A00:23C7:EB8D:DE01:B1FD:7741:867F:6EBB (talk) 13:50, 8 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello, IP user. I symphathise; but you are shouting your concerns (typing in CAPS is regarded as SHOUTING) to people who, for the most part, have no part in determining how th software works, and no more influence than anybody else on the procedures adopted.
If you have corrections to an article, you are very welcome to edit the article directly - provided you have a reliable published source for any information you want to add. Alternatively, you can make a suggestion on the article's talk page.
Adding pictures that you took yourself is reasonably easy: please see Help:Upload.
If you have suggestions about how things could be made easier, you are welcome to open a discussion at WP:VPP.
I too am an "oldie" who has taken photos of listed buildings, and have added them to Wikipedia. ColinFine (talk) 14:02, 8 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
