Editorial Reviews

Review

"An indispensable guide to understanding and treating prenatal and postpartum depression. This book is a gift not only to healthcare providers but also to family and friends of mothers suffering from these devastating perinatal mood disorders."

--Cheryl Tatano Beck, DNSc, CNM, FAAN
Professor, University of Connecticut, School of Nursing
Coauthor of Postpartum Depression Screening Scale

"In Beyond the Blues, Bennett and Indman offer a compact yet surprisingly comprehensive manual on prenatal and postpartum depression. Readable and practical, they systematically address screening and assessment, finding a therapist, myths about nursing and bonding, and treatment. Interesting and helpful are suggestions for family and friends. For health professionals, there is detailed diagnostic and treatment information. Beyond the Blues is a quick read with an easy-to-handle format. Recommended for consumer health and health sciences collections."

This book is the perfect clinical guide with a client-centered, empathetic, lived experienced-based focus. Many of the stories and perspectives in the book are relatable and would be helpful shares directly to persons-served. The clinical information is up to date and includes some less-touched-upon areas such as onset/prevalence of paternal mental health challenges.

I absolutely love this book. What a phenomenal resource for providers and women alike. The book is informative, insightful and purposeful in the information provided. I found the sections with common questions and answers to be so spot on - these echo not only the things women ask me on a daily basis, but the also the answers I give. The section on what not to say is particularly important and I think too often not included in how-to books, and I applaud your inclusion of these topics. Furthermore, adding the topic of male PPD is another area where people too often fail to recognize what research readily shows us, that men suffer as well. I could go on and on, but I want to also add that the research and citations are excellent and I really appreciated that they were so prominently featured in the book - not only because it allows for immediate awareness of the source of your information, but also for the value you are placing on evidence based medicine by virtue of having such an emphasis. In summation, this book should be required reading in medical schools and definitely in psychiatry residencies. I have always suggested residents and fellows read it when they express interest in perinatal psychiatry, and with this updated version, the strength of my conviction that this is the book to read as a primer on how to treat and understand perinatal mood disorders is that much stronger. Bravo to you both - this is a really valuable book. Carly Snyder, MD Perinatal and Reproductive Psychiatrist

I was really sad this book turned out to not be what I was looking for. I was going through a lot of perinatal depression and there weren't many books about it, only for postpartum. There were some things in the book that were okay but mostly it feels like it's a book of them telling you to get on medication, which is fine for some people. But some people like me can't just go on medication and need other options or support and I thought this book was suppose to be more supportive than just telling you "you're depressed, there's meds for that". I read probably 3/4 of the book before giving up.
