📝 XMPP - Teil 1 - Messaging mal anders

Der erste Teil von unserer neuen Artikelserie zu #XMPP ist online. Wir stellen vor, wie XMPP als Messaging-Lösung im Überblick funktioniert. So wird das Ausprobieren ganz leicht, auch wenn XMPP zu Beginn dank der Unterschiede zu herkömmlichen Messengern wie WhatsApp kompliziert anmuten mag.

Mastodon has a verification mechanism, though it looks different from Twitter's. We do not ask for your documents. Instead, if you have a website that you are known by, you can verify that you are the owner of that website.

Link to your Mastodon profile from the website, either through a visible link, or through a <link> tag in the head of the document, with a rel=me attribute, and link back to that page from your Mastodon profile. It should then get a green checkmark, like @Mastodon.

Ein Nachtrag, da es sich ganz unten im Changelog versteckt und doch für einige relevant sein könnte :

Zwischenzeitlich war das Umziehen eines #Mastodon-Kontos auf eine andere Instanz mitsamt Followern nicht möglich, da sich ein Fehler eingeschlichen hatte. Dieser wurde auch in Version 3.5.2 behoben, mindestens wenn beide Instanzen auf dieser Version sind, sollte es also wieder möglich sein.

PSA: The "verified" symbol you see on Twitter etc means absolutely nothing on Mastodon or the Fediverse. On here, symbols like are just custom emoji that anyone can use and put after their name. Don't be fooled! 😁

There are ways to verify your identity on here, but the symbol is not one of them.

The easiest way to verify your identity is if you have a website that people already know is yours. You can paste a special code into your website which will verify your address and it will turn green on your Mastodon profile (see here for instructions: https://mstdn.social/@feditips/106274105538953001).

Alternatively, you can set up a server as a subdomain of your known website address. For example, the European union set up their own Mastodon server at https://social.network.europa.eu, and we know it really is the EU because the server address is part of the EU's well-known europa.eu domain.

Mal eine Frage an die Mastodon Moderator:innen und Administrator:innen da draußen:

Kann man die Benachrichtigungen über neue Registrierungen ausstellen, die in #Mastodon Version 3.5 dazukamen?

Aus gegebenen Gründen nervt das in letzter Zeit immens.

(Auch die leeren Zeilen in #Tusky/#Fedilab nehmen nur unschön Platz weg. Wobei ich da auf ein Update hoffe, damit diese Notifications ordentlich unterstützt -> angezeigt werden.)

Okay, it's time to tell new users a secret about Mastodon.

Mastodon is (whispers) part of a much bigger network 😮

Mastodon servers use an open standard called ActivityPub to talk to each other. That's how you interact with people on other Mastodon servers.

But, dozens of other federated networks also use ActivityPub, so (this is the good bit!) you can follow people on these other networks from your Mastodon account!

For example:

PixelFed (https://pixelfed.org) is a photo sharing network, here's a random example account @Iancylkowski

PeerTube (https://joinpeertube.org) is a video sharing network, with a p2p system that allows videos to go viral even on small servers, here's a random account @craftykat

BookWyrm (https://joinbookwyrm.com) is a social reading site, an open alternative to Amazon's Goodreads, here's a random account @mouse

Every server on Mastodon and the Fediverse has its own set of rules, written by the people who own and run that particular server

You can see the rules on your server by logging in through a web browser and clicking on "About this server". You can check the rules on other servers by going to their front page and cilcking "Learn more".

If you disagree with your server's rules, you can move your account to a different server with different rules (instructions for moving are at https://mstdn.social/@feditips/107939441820299376). You can even set up a server of your own, where you write the rules yourself (instructions are at https://mstdn.social/@feditips/108120327467587242)

This is one of the biggest differences between Mastodon and Twitter: On Twitter it's entirely Twitter's management that decides what is acceptable. On Mastodon, thousands of separate servers each have their own rulebook. While Twitter governs its users, on Mastodon the users can govern themselves.
