Life in a global pandemic: Helping patients cope
By: Todd Archbold, LSW, MBA

On Feb. 11, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced the name of COVID-19, the novel coronavirus that had spread terror throughout Asia and Europe, and by then had already claimed the lives of thousands. Efforts to slow the spread to the United States was a topic of alarm and uncertainty. We knew little about COVID-19, which seemed shrouded in mystery, so far untreatable, and highly discriminatory to the elderly and those with weakened immune systems…

Minnesota’s Leading Edge: Creativity and collaboration
By: Todd Archbold, LSW, MBA

Our nation is amidst a mental health crisis. For the last decade we have seen an increase in the prevalence of psychiatric conditions, deaths from opioid overdoses, and suicide rates, coupled with a drastic increase in people with mental illness who are homeless or incarcerated. All too often, barriers to accessing care result in individuals and families enduring crisis and experiencing traumatic events that could have been prevented. We are also facing a substantial shortage of psychiatrists as well as access to inpatient beds and specialized psychiatric care. Studies demonstrate a public perception that mental illnesses are linked to dangerousness or violence. Funding strategies are constantly shifting at the federal and state levels, and the insurance reimbursement for psychiatrists is, on average, 21% less than for primary care physicians…

Change Management: Anticipation vs. Reaction
By: Todd Archbold, LSW, MBA
It was the Greek philosopher Heraclitus who was known for his doctrine that change is central to the universe. Among his many writings, he stated that nothing remains the same and everything changes. Now, nearly 2,500 years later, managers in all aspects of business continue to philosophize about the best ways to understand and manage change. We could say that one thing has in fact remained unchanged, and that is our constant struggle to understand and manage change. Managing change has traditionally been characterized by using psychological and behavioral tactics to manipulate processes or systems, such as using the “carrot and stick” method of motivation. However, change is more successfully managed through thoughtful multi-dimensional assessments and using tactics deployed through understanding and engineering technical measures…

Psychiatric Assistance Line: One Solution to the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Crisis
By: Todd Archbold, LSW, MBA
Having timely access to mental health care is critical for children with psychiatric disorders. Because there is an extreme shortage of child and adolescent psychiatrists in the United States, initial assessment and treatment of children with psychaitric disorders often occurs in primary care settings. To increase the likelihood of positive health outcomes for these children, primary care physicians need to be better equipped to meet children’s mental health needs. One way is to offer them easier access to child and adolescent psychiatrists…

Integrative Mental Health Strategies for Kids
By: Tim Culbert, MD
Rates of neurodevelopmental/behavioral/emotional disorders in kids, including ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, anxiety, learning disorders, and depression, continue to rise in the United States. In fact, a 2014 study in Pediatrics that reviewed data from 2001 to 2011 concluded that childhood disability increased from 6.9 percent in 2001 to 7.9 percent in 2011…

Psychiatric consultations for children: Practical, convenient, and free resources for primary care
By Todd Archbold, LSW, MBA, and Linda Vukelich
For decades, the shortage of child and adolescent psychiatrists (CAPs) and other specialized mental health practitioners has resulted in the challenge of meeting the overwhelming mental health needs in communities all over the country. These needs include managing chronic illnesses like depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders; to triaging and treating acute disorders, like suicidality, that rise to the level of a psychiatric…
