NVUSD Wellness Program

The NVUSD Wellness Program  is an initiative focused on the health, well-being and academic success of Napa's students and families at 5 school campuses: American Canyon Middle School, Harvest Middle School, Redwood Middle School, and Silverado Middle School and American Canyon High School. Each school site has a Wellness Team comprised of school counselors, school social worker, school psychologist, school nurse & health aid, parent liaison who help students and their families navigate the complex issues in middle school such as stress, trauma, suicide, bullying, depression, self-esteem, and relationships.

The Wellness Center Initiative is made possible through a federal Elementary and Secondary Counseling Grant and LCAP Supplemental funding from the state. The RtI4 Middle School Counseling Grant is a 3 year grant (2015 - 2018) which will provide increased mental health services to students at our four comprehensive middle schools: American Canyon, Harvest, Redwood, and Silverado. In 2018, we were able to leverage additional grant funding through California Office of Emergency Services and Napa County Department of Mental Health to continue our Wellness at the 4 middle schools as well as start programs at American Canyon High School.

The grant provides $400,000 each year to hire a half-time social worker at each school and a part-time social worker "Wellness Center Coach," who will work with the most at-risk students at all four schools, as well as a part-time director. The staff will focus on school climate and culture, truancy, students’ mental health, and teaching social and emotional skills. The grant also provides teacher training and support in Restorative Practices.

Collaborative partnerships are formed with Napa County Health and Human Services, Napa County Office of Education, Aldea, Mentis, Teens Connect, and other community based organizations.  By leveraging the resources of each agency, student health and mental health will be addressed with a countywide perspective.
