7 signs your child loves you

1. Your baby stares into your eyes

Your newborn's actually working hard to memorise your face. She is naturally drawn to your face. At this age, the world is pretty blurry to her. However, she can see most clearly at the distance between your face and hers when you hold her in your arms.

Your baby's attachment to you will be strengthened by your mutual gaze. She doesn't understand anything else about the world, but she knows you're important.

2. Your baby thinks about you even when you're not around

Between eight and 12 months old, your baby will start to experience separation anxiety and look around when you leave the room. And he'll smile when you return. Your baby is beginning to see you as a safe base. He can move away from you and explore the world, but will then return for support and comfort.

3. Your toddler throws tantrums

Nope, those screaming fits don't mean she's stopped loving you. In fact, they show she feels secure with you. She feels able to show her true feelings with you when she's hurt or angry. She wouldn't do this if she didn't trust you deeply.

4. Your toddler runs to you for comfort

Your child will come running to you when she feels shy, falls down, is scared or sad. Children this age may not truly understand the meaning of "I love you," but their actions speak louder than words.

5. Your child gives you a gift

It could be a flower picked in the park, a finger-painted card, a shiny stone, a piece of paper, a tiny bug or another gift. It’s his way of showing how special you are. Children learn to give, as well as to receive, by observing us. They copy our behaviour, both good and bad. If he sees you expressing your love through the care you show him, he'll find small ways to show you he cares and loves you too.

6. Your preschooler wants your approval.

He'll start to be more cooperative around the house and he'll look for chances to impress. He’ll pick up his toys or plate and expect praise too. "Look at me!" will become a catch phrase.

7. Your school-age child trusts you with secrets

You’ll find your child reaches out to you during difficult times, such as when she’s shy to talk to her peers or at an embarrassing moment. You're her confidante, even if she shies away from your hugs in public.
