State of the Word 2022 is just around the corner and it’s the perfect opportunity to organize a watch party for your community. 

Join others from around the world as co-founder, Matt Mullenweg, presents this year’s WordPress keynote address from New York City on December 15, 2022, 1–2:30 P.M. EST (18–19:30 UTC), and like last year, it will be live streamed.

Organizing a Watch Party

You can choose to host the watch party online or in person. Regardless of which you chose, we have created event templates in Meetup.com that will help this event stand out from others you’ve planned this year.

Is State of the Word streaming live at an odd hour in your timezone? Organize a party to watch the replay at a date/time that is convenient for your group.

Have a question you want to ask directly to Matt? You can participate in the Question & Answer following the keynote either by emailing your question ahead of time to ask-matt@wordcamp.org or ask during the event in the live stream chat on the WordPress YouTube channel.

In Person State of the Word Watch Party

All you need is a venue that has a large TV screen (that can stream YouTube) or a projector with a decent audio system. That’s it!

How to contribute to the Global Community Team

These are some of the different options for getting involved with the WordPress Global Community TeamGlobal Community Team A group of community organizers and contributors who collaborate on local events about WordPress — monthly WordPress meetups and/or annual conferences called WordCamps. 🙂

1) The best way to start is by organizing MeetupsMeetup Meetup groups are locally-organized groups that get together for face-to-face events on a regular basis (commonly once a month). Learn more about Meetups in our Meetup Organizer Handbook. and/or WordCamps in your city. If you feel like you can represent WordPress, follow the code of conduct for WordPress events, and follow the five good-faith rules for WordPress meetupMeetup Meetup groups are locally-organized groups that get together for face-to-face events on a regular basis (commonly once a month). Learn more about Meetups in our Meetup Organizer Handbook. organizers, then you can apply to join the program: 

  1. a) Check if there is a WordPress Meetup group in your city – if there is one, join it, attend the events, and step up by either helping the organizers or becoming an organizer yourself!
  2. b) Check if there is a WordCamp in your area – you can attend, apply to speak, volunteer, sponsor and/or help organize your local WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more.!
  3. c) If there is not an existing WordPress Meetup group (or if there is an inactive group) in your town/city and you want to start one, you can apply here – you’ll receive a reply within a couple of weeks.

2) If you already have experience organizing a successful WordCamp and have an availability of 2-3 hours a month, you can apply to become a WordCamp mentor here: – you’ll receive a reply within a couple of weeks.

3) If you have had at least 1 year of experience as a Meetup organizer and/or have been a WordCamp lead organizer, you are familiar with the WordPress Open Source project and philosophy, you have at least 2-3 hours a week available for contributing, and you accept our Code of Conduct, you can apply to become a Community DeputyDeputy Community Deputies are a team of people all over the world who review WordCamp and Meetup applications, interview lead organizers, and generally keep things moving at WordCamp Central. Communication is also one of the most challenging and important facets of our work, and we sure do a ton of it! In this workshop, we’ll explore how to communicate empathetically through active/reflective listening so that we accurately hear, validate, and respond to what others are saying, whether it’s a community member, a client or customer, or a teammate. We’ll also examine different instances where active/reflective listening techniques can be utilized. You’ll learn enhanced listening skills that can be applied to everyday conversations, and will bolster trust and strengthen relationships.

Meetup.com Accessibility Overlay Update

Update November 24, 2022: Meetup.com requested that we update the “Next Steps” portion to focus on feedback around accessibilityAccessibility Accessibility (commonly shortened to a11y) refers to the design of products, devices, services, or environments for people with disabilities. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accessibility) of their platform broadly, instead of the accessibility overlay, as that is no longer in place.

In recent weeks, WordPress meetupMeetup Meetup groups are locally-organized groups that get together for face-to-face events on a regular basis (commonly once a month). Learn more about Meetups in our Meetup Organizer Handbook. organizers expressed their disappointment in Meetup.com’s new accessibility overlay, and brought this to the attention of the Community Team. Since then, @peiraisotta and I met with Meetup’s Director of Engineering, their Head of Customer Success, and their GM of Meetup Pro. 

Meetup.com was very receptive to our feedback, and they have removed the accessibility overlay.

Here are some additional notes from our chat. 

Meetup was working with EqualWeb. EqualWeb’s widgetWidget A WordPress Widget is a small block that performs a specific function. You can add these widgets in sidebars also known as widget-ready areas on your web page. WordPress widgets were originally created to provide a simple and easy-to-use way of giving design and structure control of the WordPress theme to the user. does scan for accessibility issues, and the original plan was for EqualWeb’s team (real people!) to provide progressive fixes to the overlay. Meetup’s hope was to provide, over time, a fully accessible overlay. 

In this meeting, Isotta and I provided our feedback on accessibility overlays. At a high level, our main points were:

  • Overlays create a poor user experience for people who use assistive technologyAssistive technology Assistive technology is an umbrella term that includes assistive, adaptive, and rehabilitative devices for people with disabilities and also includes the process used in selecting, locating, and using them. Assistive technology promotes greater independence by enabling people to perform tasks that they were formerly unable to accomplish, or had great difficulty accomplishing, by providing enhancements to, or changing methods of interacting with, the technology needed to accomplish such tasks. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assistive_technology and may ignore key WCAGWCAG WCAG is an acronym for Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. These guidelines are helping make sure the internet is accessible to all people no matter how they would need to access the internet (screen-reader, keyboard only, etc) https://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG21/. issues
  • There are increasing legal and privacy concerns associated with accessibility overlays
  • Overlays do not provide equal and open access to a platform

While it was great to hear that the solutions that Meetup.com hoped to apply will be people-driven, and not automated solutions, it would be to the overlay. In this case, the Community team recommended that those changes be made to Meetup.com’s source code to provide an improved experience for everyone. 

Next steps

As part of Meetup.com’s accessibility roadmap, they would value hearing from WordPress community members. If you have experience using Meetup, especially across across all platforms (web, mobile web, apps, etc.), from an accessibility standpoint, have 50 min in coming weeks, and are interested in speaking with Meetup around which parts of their website/features we would like them to prioritize, please let us know, either in the comments, or by pinging @angelasjin or @peiraisotta. 

Major kudos to Bet Hannon, Joe Simpson, and Sumner Davenport, accessibility allies who raised the issue with the Community team and helped us prepare for the conversation with Meetup.com.

Meetup Reactivation Progress

The WordPress Meetup Reactivation Project is well underway. In June, the reactivation project identified that 416 of our meetup groups were dormant. 

Since then, 40 meetup global community members have joined as reactivation supporters. These amazing volunteers are reaching out directly to the organizers of each dormant meetup group, and through their efforts, 127 MeetupsMeetup Meetup groups are locally-organized groups that get together for face-to-face events on a regular basis (commonly once a month). Announcement: New European Camera Kits

The Community Team started discussions around the WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. Camera Kit program in 2018. During these discussions, it was agreed that the Camera Kit program still has its place, but the equipment is hopelessly outdated.

In 2019 @angelasjin asked for recommendations for possible new equipment. Because of the pandemic, plans for new Camera Kits were halted. Early this year, I revived the refurbishment by proposing the composition of new equipment. The first batch of equipment was ordered in late July to run some tests.

Finally, it’s time to say hi to the new European Camera Kits! Please welcome Europa, Callisto, Triton, Dione, Mars, Sedna, Eris and Neptune to the community! These eight brand new WordCamp Camera Kits will be available for all European WordCamps starting in January 2023.

All new European Camera Kits are capable of live streaming and recording WordCamp sessions. Equipment is put together with ease of use, good audio quality and easier processing of raw footage in mind. These are significant improvements compared to old Camera Kits.

Camera Kits include a Zoom Q8n-4k camera, Zoom SSHSSH Secure SHell - a protocol for securely connecting to a remote system in addition to or in place of a password.-6 microphone, Rode Wireless Go II microphones, camera stand and necessary cables* and accessories. Six of the kits include a device that transforms the camera output into a webcam so that any computer can be used for streaming.

Currently, two of the kits include capabilities for more advanced live streaming, allowing organisers to mix multiple video sources like camera and stage screen into the stream. Video stream mixed with ATEM Mini and transferred via USB-connection acts like a typical webcam when connected to any computer.

Camera Kits travel in pairs of two. That creates even more possibilities for events with a single track, as the camera of the second kit can be connected to a video mixer, making it possible to change the angle of view in the stream. If you wish to take advantage of the video mixer at your WordCamp, mention that in the Camera Kit request form.

I will update the handbook pages shortly to contain all documentation needed for using and making the most of the new Camera Kits. European WordCamps taking place in 2023 can already submit Camera Kit requests.

What about other continents? If the new European Camera Kits prove to be effective and wanted by organisers, WordCamp CentralWordCamp Central Website for all WordCamp activities globally. https://central.wordcamp.org includes a list of upcoming and past camp with links to each. will consider having similar equipment available in the Americas and Asia in future. Meanwhile, the original Camera Kits are still available in the U.S. and Canada.

What happens to old European Camera Kits? WordCamp Central and I plan to donate the equipment to communities in need, primarily for WordPress or other Open SourceOpen Source Open Source denotes software for which the original source code is made freely available and may be redistributed and modified. Open Source **must be** delivered via a licensing model, see GPL. communities. Details about this and the application process will be shared in 2023.
