Celebrating moms who may be on a different journey from "everyone else," this book is for the new mom—or any mom—who needs support. A Promise is here to remind us that no matter what phase we are in as a mom, we are going to get through it and be okay.

Written and illustrated by Dr. Annie Rohr, a psychologist and "not-so-perfect" mama, A Promise is not a perfect book with perfect pictures. Instead, it is a reminder that each mother's journey is unique. We cannot compare ourselves to each other. Most of all, it is a reassurance that motherhood doesn't have to be perfect to be beautiful. In Dr. Rohr's opinion, not enough is done to address postpartum mental health, and parenting discussions often fail to normalize the feelings of frustration, depression and isolation experienced by new mothers. Publications and social media emphasize the wonder of motherhood and that there's a standard of "normal," thereby increasing anxiety in women whose experiences don t align.

A Promise is presented in Dr. Rohr's voice as a conversation directed to a newborn, with accompanying advice and affirmations for mothers. "I was unprepared for how I would feel after I had my baby," Dr. Rohr says. "I felt lost and isolated, I couldn't relate to the mom-and-baby books, my friends didn't have the same experiences and even worse, I was embarrassed—I'm a doctor who should know how to prevent and treat this; I had all this medical and therapeutic knowledge, but I couldn't 'fix' the problem. I wrote this book because I wanted to create something that would have helped me during those early days. I want to be a comfort for new moms and be that voice that says, 'Hey, you're not alone! It's OK that your motherhood journey isn't like anyone else's. It's OK that you don't feel amazing all the time.'"

Dr. Rohr also includes a resource section with further guidance and a list of helpful organizations offering assistance with postpartum issues.

This is such a beautiful book with an important message to new mothers, that having a baby can be a complex mix of joy, love, grief, overwhelm and change of identity. Written by a psychologist bravely sharing some of her own experience and reminding new mothers that they are not alone, the book is full of messages of love and hope along with guidance, encouragement and resources for mothers to help them reach out for help and take care of themselves. I wish I had this book when my children were babies. It would have served as a lifeline in the dark times. I've given it to several new moms (an wonderful gift) and the feedback I've received is overwhelming gratitude for seeing their experience reflected back to them and giving them the hope and reassurance that they are good mothers and their babies will be just fine. Thank you Dr. Rohr for sharing this important message!!

As a perinatal therapist specializing in working with new moms struggling with feelings of overwhelm, stress and mood & anxiety disorder, I was thrilled to discover this book! Dr. Annie Rohr shares beautiful illustrations along with words of encouragement and reminders that you can get through the hard times. All women struggle with periods of ups and downs during the transition to motherhood and throughout parenting. This book normalizes the difficulties and offers encouragement, as if coming directly from a trusted, compassionate, nonjudgmental best friend who is right there by your side. I look forward to sharing this with the moms I work with and highly recommend as a great gift - whether for yourself or another new mom/mom-to-be.

As a new mom, people warned me about the lack of sleep and endless diaper changes but no one told me about this new person I was about to become.. a MOM. Reading this book has helped me navigate this new life I was living with this new tiny person that I was so familiar with yet unfamiliar with all at the same time. A great book to buy for yourself if you are expecting or a great gift to buy for someone in your life who is expecting!

Dr. Rohr talks about what it's really like to be a new mom. Her story reminds us that people handle every day things differently and we should talk about it. Women are in a unique position with a baby in their lives and we must all find a path to accepting a new way of being. A Promise presents you with things to think about and maybe a path you haven't thought of.

Perfect for all mommies! A real perspective from a real mom and baby. Great gift idea for new moms! I’m a mother of two girls ages 4 and 6, and it was so relatable.
