Owing to medical advances and healthier lifestyles, the United States has a growing number of elderly and aging adults (age 65 years or older) who are living longer than past generations. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, older Americans will make up more than 20 percent of the U.S. population starting in 2030. The elderly population experiences more chronic conditions and comorbidities (including degenerative diseases, physical disabilities, and mental illnesses) than younger populations. Consequently, there is increased demand for specialty care for this population, as well as a need to address the challenges faced by many older adults (and often their family caregivers) in accessing affordable, high-quality care.
