NVUSD recognizes that students and staff have the right to a safe and secure campus where they are free from physical and psychological harm. The District is fully committed to maximizing school safety and to creating a positive learning environment that includes strategies for violence prevention and high expectations for student conduct, responsible behavior, and respect for others. The District also recognizes the importance of protecting district property, facilities, and equipment from vandalism and theft.
All California public schools kindergarten and grades one through twelve must develop a comprehensive school safety plan, per California Education Code sections 32280-32289.
Since 1999, California schools have enacted safety protocols meant to protect students and staff from gun violence. State law requires all public schools in California to have safety plans in case of an emergency, and for those plans to be updated annually.
The news media, (newspaper, radio, television), often visit schools in the district to photograph or video our students and staff for print, broadcast or electronic stories. The district also publishes pictures or videos of students involved in various school activities in newsletters, social media and the NVUSD website. Schools may also publish student work and/or photographs to inform the public of school and curricular activities in newsletters, social media or on school websites. The district and individual schools publish pictures or videos of students and school related student work/activities in communication modes including, but not limited to, newsletters, social media and district websites.
Parents/guardians have the right to request their child not be photographed, interviewed or be the subject of news stories and not have the student’s work and/or photograph published in the news media or on district or school social media or websites.
To opt your student OUT of being photographed or videoed, complete the Media Opt Out form and return it to your child's school.
NVUSD is committed to assuring the safety of all school community members. To help meet this end, a procedure was identified to assess student threats of violence, assist with conflict resolution, and document that process. This protocol is an important piece of our PBIS system, which aims to create a safe climate at all schools in the district. It is designed to be completed by a team of responders which could include administrators, psychologists, counselors, school resource officers, social workers, nurses, teachers and other support personnel.
