Nobody will remember: - Your salary - Your fancy title - How β€˜busy’ you were - How stressed you were - How many hours you worked People will remember: - That one time you used Docker Swarm instead of Kubernetes

I get quite a few invites to these "roundtables" where "industry leaders" come together to talk about... I don't know what. I'm guessing, many words but 0 useful content? Has anyone ever actually attended one of these? And if so, why?

Cold recruiter messages were annoying enough as a Software Engineer. But when you're a Head of Engineering everyone is desperate to sell you engineers, or managers, or logging / elasticsearch / cloud / SaaS. Or send you phishing emails pretending to be the CEO (really?)πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

As a… – Twitter user I want… – condescending tweets introducing a thread, like β€œMost of you are fucking idiots, here’s 45 tricks I guarantee you don’t know about the iPhone” so that… – I can learn that the volume up button increases volume

Anyone noticed a big rise in "dev influencers" here recently? Basically folks who started doing iOS or Javascript six months ago, have 10,000 followers and just relentlessly post stuff like "what's your favourite API?" or "here's how variables work" for engagement.

Please don't use exceptions for flow control. Checking if a user exists or not? It's perfectly valid for them not to. If you have a network or query problem, that's a case for an exception. This is language agnostic. There's a reason #golang and #swiftlang allow multi retvals.

Want to return null from a repository method, e.g. find()? Please replace it with an exception. NULL should only be used for the absence of primitive values (if nullable is a business rule), but not in cases, were you have the chance to give more information like UserNotFound.

LinkedIn has finally added the laughing reaction. Get your popcorn ready for all the passive-aggressiveness that’s on the way! 🍿

Copilot using OSS to train itself, and then GitHub charging for it, is not much different than the majority of us using and building our apps based on OSS, and then charging for them, without paying a dime to the dozens of libraries and frameworks we use.

This is cool, but not as random as the keystrokes of developers trying to exit vim.

I was today years old when I found out Cloudflare has a wall full of lava lamps they feed into a camera as a way to generate randomness to create cryptographic keys

Helios is a WIP GUI automation tool written in Go that uses image recognition powered by OpenCV. I'm currently using it to bot an android mobile game running in an emulator. There's a lot of work to do yet! Check it out and let's collaborate! github.com/J7mbo/helios #golang

The community, attitudes towards different viewpoints, being more welcoming, less purism. The Go community has a *long* way to go to get anywhere near how PHP are doing things there. Oh, and composer was so much easier to work with than modules. #php #golang

For #golang to survive and continue to thrive, what features/areas do you think it needs to focus on next? (Yes this is for a thing, and that thing is tonight’s live recording of @GoTimeFM with @deadprogram which is shaping up to be quite the episode!)

I haven't posted much for some years now as I got away from the whole 'likes and validation' thing. But I've been ignoring the possibility that my posts may have helped someone at some point. You may expect some more posts unrelated to income or self-promotion at some point :)

Pro-Tip on being a Technical Lead - if you are the one *making* all the decisions for your team, there's something wrong there. Putting that on your CV may not have the intended impact. #leadership

There is no chance anyone will convince me that being sat on my balcony, with the sun shining and surrounded by nature, along with having random video chats with colleagues, is worse than a concrete block where how you dress is considered part of your expertise. #remotework ftw.
