The hook for the article, that the NYT uncovered this about Haiti, is false; that is why people are mad. The narrative in the piece, about the debt, is good. The narrative of discovery is bad. Academics are not asking journalists to tell bad stories, just ones that are true.

It’s not even new from a “mainstream media” point of view. In the early 2000s the BBC did a documentary series called Racism: A history. In it they discuss how Haiti was put in debt by France to gain its independence. It may not have been as detailed as the Times piece but

grain of salt because I write in a field in which articles are often 50% footnotes, but the NYT haiti omission seems glaring. if citations are truly disruptive to story & flow, could writers not acknowledge crucial contributors/sources in italics at the end of an article?

Honestly this is why I didn’t bother to read the article: because it’s a well established fact in the Haitian community and I know a lot of Haitians. This isn’t a scoop.
