We’re excited to announce that Ellie Miller is joining the HNP DevHub — Hearst Newspapers’ editorial engineering, product development and audience strategy team — as director of newsletter strategy, focusing on coordinating high-value editorial programs for local readers’ inboxes.
“I am thrilled to join Hearst Newspapers and the DevHub team and to be a part of their growth and investment in newsrooms around the U.S.,” Miller said. “This is a vitally important time to invest in expanding and serving local audiences.”
HNP’s DevHub team works with local newsrooms such as The San Francisco Chronicle, San Antonio Express-News, Houston Chronicle, Albany Times-Union and a group of newsrooms across Connecticut. The team is focused on local news, and builds major projects such as election results subsites, programs such as Top Restaurants, tools such as the California Fire Tracker and Texas Flood Tracker, and a series of templates that allow journalists to publish interactive stories and experiences without requiring programming skills.
Miller has worked in journalism as an editor for newspapers and digital media, most recently with CNN+. Previously, she was the Newsletter and Curation Editor at the Wall Street Journal, where she had responsibilities for editorial, strategic and product management work across a large portfolio of email programs.
“Ellie’s background guiding strategy and managing newsletter programs make her an ideal fit to help guide and innovate our program for local markets,” said Patty Michalski, HNP’s senior vice president for content strategy and innovation. “Newsletters are a vital platform and we’re excited to have Ellie’s leadership and experience at Hearst.”
Miller will be tasked with helping guide strategy across HNP newsrooms’ newsletter portfolio, which includes dozens of emails every day, spanning an array of topics. These include:
- The Houston Chronicle’s The 713, a daily briefing-style newsletter that provides readers with an overview of their city’s news in five minutes or less.
- The San Francisco Chronicle’s TotalSF: Inside the Newsroom, a monthly update for subscribers about what’s going on with SFChronicle journalists.
- The Times Union of Albany’s Capitol Confidential, a daily newsletter shedding light on the happenings in New York state politics.
Miller has worked in journalism in Hong Kong and New York, and grew up mostly in Nebraska and Montana. She currently resides in New York City.
