From Politics Editor Sara Libby:

The San Francisco Chronicle is thrilled to announce the hiring of Sophia Bollag as a reporter covering the governor, California Capitol and state politics from Sacramento.

Bollag has covered California politics and government from Sacramento for five years, and most recently covered Gov. Gavin Newsom’s administration for the Sacramento Bee. She previously covered the California Legislature for the Associated Press and worked as a Sacramento bureau intern for the Los Angeles Times. She grew up in the East Bay and graduated from Northwestern University, where she studied journalism and literature.

“Sophia has proven to be a formidable voice on the biggest issues in California, using aggressive reporting and the state's public-records law to illuminate and explain how power is wielded in Sacramento, how politicians spend taxpayer money and how policies affect our lives,” said Demian Bulwa, The Chronicle’s director of news. “We look forward to her reporting at a time when California seeks to provide a national model for attacking problems, but at the same time often fails to solve its own.”

“We are super pumped to have Sophia join the team, as she’s proven to be a rising star in covering California politics,” said Joe Garofoli, The Chronicle’s senior political writer. “We can’t wait to see what she does next at The Chronicle.”

In her new role, Bollag will join Dustin Gardiner and the rest of the politics team in covering Newsom, consequential issues moving through the Legislature and the political dynamics and conversations shaping the state of California.

“I'm so excited to be joining The Chronicle to cover state politics. I look forward to telling readers important stories about their government and holding powerful officials accountable,” said Bollag.
