  • This week’s online workshops:
  • Upcoming online workshops
  • Training team hosted 12 hours of WordPress Translation Day – Contributor Day on Sep 30. There were 31 attendees in total across the globe (Asia, Europe, Africa and North America) attending the event virtually over Zoom. During the event, we’ve gotten 1 full lesson plan translated in Serbian and there will be a Hindi version completed as well. This was a great onboarding session to welcome new contributors as well with more than 50% being first time #WordPress contributors. We will aim to facilitate more events of such in the near future. Link to the event’s recap post can be found here or discover #wptranslationday.

HactoberFest Update

Last year, @Chetan Prajapati inspired the team to participate in Hacktoberfest. Previously this was primarily a developer oriented event. Efforts are underway for participation again this year, and now include options for technical content and translations. This is perfect timing with WP Translation Day qualifying, and WP AccessibilityAccessibility Accessibility (commonly shortened to a11y) refers to the design of products, devices, services, or environments for people with disabilities. Supporting WP Diversity

Julia Says

Hi Training team! @jillbinder and I have a question for you! Jill is thinking about how to develop clear lesson plans so that other people in the WordPress community can lead the WPDiversity workshops (titled Diverse Speaker Training and Organizing Diverse & Inclusive WordPress Events ). I know that the Learn WordPress Lesson Plan page could be a great home for this. Are there specific requirements around the facilitator notes and slide deck format? Specifically, can the slides be in Google Slides and Google Docs, or would you prefer a different format?

Drawing attention here to the work Jill is doing for WP Diversity efforts and how Learn can best support that. If you would like to get involved on that, please review the comments there.

Jonathan says

Hey there @faculty-smes. The first four lessons for my “Extend a BlockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. The idea combines concepts of what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and user experience. creating templates – https://github.com/WordPress/Learn/issues/869
creating template parts – https://github.com/WordPress/Learn/issues/870
exporting the theme – https://github.com/WordPress/Learn/issues/955
To make reviewing easier, I’ve linked to the lesson content in the body of the GitHubGitHub GitHub is a website that offers online implementation of git repositories that can easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers. Participation in team meetings

We have some new folks with us today that are unfamiliar with how teams run meetings. Usually these are Slack chats, no Zoom. This was for global bandwidth, language, and other concerns. It still helps folks participate async as well.

Additionally, we’d like to resume including updates from multiple people during team meetings.

If you would like to help facilitate parts of meetings, such as covering a specific news item that you are especially working on or tracking, we’d love to include you.

Open Discussions

Destiny Says

I commented on the agenda with some items I’d love raised with the team during the meeting but it looks like we didn’t get to them today. For future reference, is there a better way for folks to engage directly async?
Hey folks! We are looking to recruit two more people to be Welcome Wrangles members for October. More information on how to perform this work is in this handbook page. If you’re interested, please feel free to reach out to me, @Amit Patel@Ben Evans or any one of your Training Team reps!
I also wanted to flag that the meeting calendar shows team meetings every week instead of alternating office hours – https://make.wordpress.org/meetings/#training can we update this? Also, can we consider an APAC Coffee Hour?   I’m happy to host this additional Coffee Hour, or we can enlist another Faculty Member (or hold rotations )

Amit Patel Says

Am in favour of rotation methodology and i am in as well

Hauwa Abashiya Says

Destiny I’d say update the agenda directly rather than comment. That way we don’t miss it.
I updated the Calendar yesterday and all seemed fine, let me know if that is not the case

Destiny Says

I’d say update the agenda directly rather than comment. That way we don’t miss it.
My comments are longer than bullet points though, and that seems to disrupt the flow of the agenda post which seems to only have headlines. We are ok if I go in to add comments directly into the agenda?I think another thing about doing it this way is that people who are following the post won’t receive an update if i edit the post, so folks who’d like to engage async there won’t receive the appropriate updates

Amit Patel Says

@Hauwa Abashiya, We did discussed yesterday during APAC faculty meeting regarding above point. Since we will need update revisionsRevisions The WordPress revisions system stores a record of each saved draft or published update. The revision system allows you to see what changes were made in each revision by dragging a slider (or using the Next/Previous buttons). The display indicates what has changed in each revision. for both time zone faculty meeting. So sometimes for any one point, there might be multiple opinions or suggestions. Adding comment will really help to finalize any one of the decision after checking what other faculty team members suggest. I am okay with commenting first as compared to updating post directly. Hope that makes sense.

Become an Online Workshop Facilitator or Tutorial Presenter Today!

The Training Team offers many ways for contributors to create content for https://learn.wordpress.org/. This month, I’ve been processing applications people submit to become Online Workshop Facilitators and Tutorial Presenters. I realized some people may not be aware of these contribution opportunities, and wanted to take a moment to reintroduce them to the team.

What are Online Workshops and Tutorials?

Online Workshops are interactive learning opportunities, often hosted via Zoom. They are safe spaces where people can come as they are, develop new ideas, explore issues, ask questions, network over shared interests, exchange theories, collaborate on work, and thrive in uncertainty. Online Workshop Facilitators are volunteers who host these workshops and encourage attendees to join in on the topic being looked at in the session.

Tutorials are short standalone videos that walk viewers through a process, or teach a WordPress-related concept. Tutorial Presenters are the driving force behind the creation of Tutorials on Learn WordPress, and are the voices people hear when they watch these recordings.

This sounds interesting! How can I join?

The Training Team is always looking for new contributors to facilitate Online Workshops, and present Tutorials! You can apply to become each of these roles below:

Having knowledge or experience about the topic you’ll present on is useful. But you don’t need to be an expert to apply to these roles! Let us know in the application form how familiar you are with your presentation topic, and what sort of assistance we can offer you to help you be successful. If you have any questions about joining, feel free to reach out in the #training SlackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/. channel, and we’d be happy to answer those questions for you.

What is reviewed in the application process?

The Training Team offers many opportunities for people to contribute without the need to apply. The Online Workshop Facilitator and Tutorial Presenter roles are unique in that there is a vetting process. One reason is because the team is looking for people who follow the WordPress Community code of conduct, and honor the WordPress guidelines around licensing and trademark usage. You can read more details about the vetting processes below:

Thanks for reading. We look forward to seeing you join our team of Facilitators and Presenters!
