Number of donors

According to our records, as of February 2022, over 110,000 people have donated to GiveWell or our recommended charities, either by donating through GiveWell or by reporting that a direct-to-charity donation was influenced by GiveWell. This represents individual donors who have given to GiveWell or our top charities as a direct result of our research. It does not include anonymous donors.

As of February 2022, we have directed more than $1 billion to our top and standout charities, according to the historical metrics reports listed on our impact page, our 2020 metrics report, and internal records from 2021. Note: as of October 2021, we no longer offer a "standout charity" designation.

Lives saved

We estimate that GiveWell-directed donations to our recommended charities between 2009 and 2021 will avert over 159,000 deaths. This figure is based on our estimates of the cost per death averted by each of our top charities (as of 2022) that implement interventions whose primary impact is averting deaths—the Against Malaria Foundation, Malaria Consortium's seasonal malaria chemoprevention program, Helen Keller International's vitamin A supplementation program, and New Incentives—for grants we made or recommended in 2020 and 2021 and our estimates of the total amount of funding GiveWell has directed to top charities since 2009. We calculate this estimate in our impact analysis of grants to top charities. This analysis doesn't include deaths averted by donations to organizations we listed as standout charities before we stopped offering that designation (such as Development Media International and Living Goods), through Incubation Grants (such as Results for Development), or through charities we've recommended in the past but no longer recommend (such as VillageReach).
