Leading international studies

Mayo Clinic doctors and researchers have led many of the largest international studies into brain aneurysm diagnoses and treatment techniques dating back to 1991.

Mayo Clinic served as the coordinating center for the International Study of Unruptured Intracranial Aneurysms (ISUIA). The research, led by Mayo Clinic and sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, helped doctors more reliably determine brain aneurysms needing immediate treatment.

Pipeline embolization expertise

Mayo Clinic doctors were early contributors in the development of pipeline embolization approaches, collaborating on both the Pipeline for Uncoilable or Failed Aneurysms (PUFS) study as well as the Aneurysm Study of Pipeline in an Observational Registry (ASPIRE) study, both of which assessed the feasibility, safety and efficacy of flow diverters for the treatment of unruptured brain aneurysms.

Mayo Clinic was one of the first medical institutions to use flow diverters in aneurysm treatment, and has contributed significantly to basic research on flow technology.

American Heart Association (AHA) guidelines for care

Mayo Clinic doctors co-chaired the AHA guidelines on caring for subarachnoid hemorrhages and on care for unruptured aneurysms.
