Private blogging, it’s a vibe. But some innermost thoughts deserve to be just that: inner. Very, very inner. Now, imagine the perfect complementary app to this one (hellsite). With absolute encryption (for superior secrecy levels), an allowance of thirty photos per entry (for all the moments), even email and text integration (text yourself whenever you feel like it). Yeah, that’s what this is:
Day One (not a hellsite) has joined our family at Automattic. That means Day One (not a hellsite) has joined your family, Tumblr. And that means the universe is telling you to try journaling.
There’s no such thing as cringe in a private journal; it’s all just ~intimacy~. And checking in with yourself in a solo space that looks nice and feels nice. With zero chance of your secrets, the Story of You, or your WIPs reaching other readers unless, or until, you want them to. (No, really. It’s all utterly encrypted.)
Try it out, and never accidentally post something wildly personal on main again. (You’re free to keep doing it on purpose here, though.)
Easier access to gifting, tipping, messaging, and all of the other wonderful things your blog allows.
Consistency! It’s a similar view and experience to our mobile apps.
New default URL! Instead of yourtumblrname.tumblr.com, folks will access your blog at tumblr.com/yourtumblrname.
This is optional and can be toggled off or on from your blog settings. No one who is using a custom theme will be affected by this update. But for those who are using the default, this is what the new view will look like:
FAQ
Why is this good? Why does this matter?
New and existing features such as gifting, tipping, and messaging will appear in the same spot across the board. This will make it easier for folks to navigate any blog and find what they’re looking for. Additionally, the newly-improved notes view means conversations happening around a post can be filtered, making them easier to use.
Does this mean you will eventually get rid of custom themes?
No! Being able to express yourself with the broadest array of possible options is an essential part of Tumblr. We’re proud of being one of the last places to allow custom HTML and CSS, allowing users to truly make their blog their own or select from a wide variety of pre-built themes. Again, no one who is using a custom theme will be affected by this update.
How do I enable the new default view if I’m using a custom theme?
Head to your blog settings on web and switch the “Custom theme” toggle off. Anyone navigating to your blog will now see the new blog view at tumblr.com/yourtumblrname. Your blog settings, ask button, archive, gifting, and blog-level tipping will live at the top of your new view, where your followers expect to find them. Anyone that navigates to your blog’s old view will be redirected here.
How do Iuse my Tumblr with a custom theme?
If you’d like to customize your blog, head to your blog settings on web and turn the “Enable custom theme” switch on. From there, you can “Edit theme” or “View website.” Your customized blog will now appear in the theme of your choice at yourtumblrname.tumblr.com. In addition, folks can also view your blog in the new default blog view at tumblr.com/yourtumblrname, with all its bells and whistles immediately accessible at the top—where followers expect them to be.

As you know, art and artists make Tumblr what it is. We want everyone on Tumblr to be able to fully express themselves while also having control over what they encounter on their dashboards. That’s why we’re introducing Community Labels, an extension to your “Content you see” settings. Our ultimate goal is to create a more open Tumblr, and this is our first step in that direction.
As a poster and reblogger, Community Labels are your way to help your followers avoid anything they’d rather not come across on their dashboards.
As a follower, setting your content preferences is a way to adjust your feed to your own comfort levels.
How does it work?
When creating new posts (or editing old posts), you’ll see controls allowing you to label your post as unsuitable for those filtering certain content types it contains.
When content is labeled, it will either be hidden, blurred, or displayed normally, based on each user’s preferences.
In your “Content you see” settings, you can now choose to show, blur, or hide content that depicts the following topics:
Drug and alcohol addiction: Contains discussions of substance abuse or addiction experience.
Violence: Contains violent or graphic content similar to what you might see in an age-restricted movie.
Sexual themes: Contains sexually suggestive subject matter, such as erotic writing or imagery.
Some examples of content that would require a community label:
Fanart of your favorite ship engaging with each other in…a very private moment
Euphoria GIFs showing Rue’s substance abuse
A movie trailer depicting graphic war scenes
A graphic 50 Shades of Grey edit
This doesn’t change our content policies: spam, hate content, and porn bots are still not welcome in the community. It’s also still important that we abide by app store rules, which means we need to make sure that mature content is only accessible to people who are old enough and have opted in to view that type of content. More information about Community Labels is available in the Help Center.
This is an opportunity to work towards a richer, more nuanced Tumblr experience while making sure everyone who enjoys using Tumblr can do so safely. That future we mentioned above? We’re already moving towards it.
Welcome to the smallest atom of the tiniest bubble resting in the top layer of the tip of the ominously large iceberg of breathtaking fanart you’ve created so far in celebration of the Sandman’s Netflix release. Very good.
Vampires. Raccoons. Gay pining. You were never going to be normal about this, were you. Here’s your What We Do In The Shadows fanart edit (careful, mild spoilers ahead).
Hello September, how did this happen? While time persists in its relentless trudge, photographers on Tumblr continue to capture all moments big and small. Please enjoy this offering of creatures arrested in time: beast, bird, insect, and that one marine invertebrate which is an echinoderm (yeah, had to look that one up).
One thing we know about cowboys is that Tumblr has a lot of feelings about them. Each year in August, intrepid artists and writers fuel those feelings by setting out on a daily art challenge to explore the wild wild west and its inhabitants. And, well, this year was no exception. Here’s your Yeehawgust art round-up, Tumblr. Be sure to visit @yeehawgust for the full experience, which includesmanyexcellentwrittensubmissions!
Hello Tuesday, it’s Tumblr. Why do we find tiny things so charming? Who knows! This week, we’re celebrating the minifig photography community and the stories they tell. These folks really know how to set a scene: We’ve got everything from sweet encounters with the “real” world to surreal icons re-imagined. And a clown in flames. Because, well, that just felt very on-brand. We see you, minifig community. Welcome.
No one panic. The crabs are back. They're helping us launch TumblrMart on web today, and will be bringing TumblrMart to Android and iOS very soon. You're welcome.
What’s TumblrMart?
TumblrMart is your new storefront for gifting joy to your friends on Tumblr. We’re launching the mart with the ability to gift Ad-Free Browsing and this April Fools’ infamous “Summon Crab!” button, with more features to be added in the future.
You can now give someone the gift of:
24 hours’ worth of crustacean chaos ($2.99),
a month of Ad-Free Browsing ($4.99), or
a year of Ad-Free Browsing ($39.99).
You can include a little note with your present or even give anonymously—like the benevolent bestower you know you are.
You will see a small gift icon on their blog header. Click it.
A small menu will appear with potential prezzies. Choose one.
Enter your payment details, and hit “Pay now.”
The lucky user receives their present.
Celebrate. You just made someone’s dash more fun! Clack.
What else do you need to know?
TumblrMart is not the same thing as our Tumblr Shop…
You currently cannot buy items for yourself on TumblrMart. This is for gifting toother users only.
Gifted Ad-Free Browsing will begin automatically for the recipient, but users must activate their crabs by clicking or tapping the “Summon Crab!” button that will become visible to them at the top of their dashboard.
TumblrMart is available globally from today on web. A mobile release will launch soon, which means mobile users will, at long last, be able to join in with the crab infestation. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.
Anxious about online payment security? Check out this handy graph for total peace of mind. If you have questions, drop us a line on@wipor Support, or keep an eye out for more on@changes.
TumblrMart is out on iOS and Android as of today! This link will take you there directly. This means you can now give the gift of crabs (or Ad-Free Browsing) on the go. The recipient of your gift can enjoy their crabs (or Ad-Free Browsing) on the go. It’s all coming up crabs (and Ad-Free Browsing).
Who knew a tiny orange cat making friends with robots in a post-apocalyptic world could spark so much joy? Everyone. Everyone knew this. Here’s your Stray fanart round-up.
