Subscription Rates and Billing
Q: How much do subscriptions cost?
A: We offer a number of frequencies of delivery, plus digital-only options. As of 12/27/2021, here are the print home delivery subscription rates for most of the nine Bay Area counties:
Monday-Sunday (7-day) is $19.45 a week
Sunday-Friday (6-day) is $18.40 a week
Monday-Saturday (6-day) is $13.15 a week
Sunday Only is $9.00 a week
All options include Unlimited Digital Access at no extra cost.
Additional charges may apply for Bonus Days and Premium Days (see below).
Pursuant to California regulations, the subscription rate includes an average transportation cost of $1.10 and includes sales tax reimbursement on any taxable portion of the subscription.
The prices for home delivery may be somewhat higher in the outlying areas. For mail subscription rates please contact Member Services.

An in-app subscription (paid through your Apple ID/iTunes or Google account) is $5.99 per month. Some customers are grandfathered in with a $59.99 per year price. There is also an option to subscribe through Amazon using a compatible Kindle device. The current subscription rate from Amazon is $5.99 per month. In-app and Kindle subscriptions do not include the same access and benefits as an Unlimited Digital Access subscription.
Q: Are there digital-only and print-only rates?
A: Yes. The regular digital-only rate is $34.50 a week. The regular print-only, home delivery subscription rates are as follows:
Monday-Sunday is $14.00 a week
Monday-Saturday is $10.05 a week
Sunday Only is $5.65 a week
Print only subscriptions do not include Unlimited Digital Access.
Q: Are subscribers charged for Bonus Days and Premium Days?
A: Yes, as follows:
Bonus days: All Home Delivery subscriptions include delivery on New Year’s Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day and Thanksgiving. Customers who are not regularly scheduled to receive these deliveries will be charged $2.00 for each day. This will result in an adjustment to the length of your subscription.
Premium days: All Home Delivery subscriptions include delivery of up to eight premium issues delivered throughout the year. For each premium issue, your subscription account balance will be charged up to $6.00 in the billing period when the premium issue is delivered. This will result in an adjustment to the length of your subscription. Premium days for 2022: 2/13, 4/24, 6/12, 6/26, 8/7, 10/16, 12/11.
Q: What is your cancellation and refund policy?
A: Your San Francisco Chronicle subscription will continue until cancelled, but may be cancelled at any time by calling Subscriber Services at 415-777-7000 or 800-310-2455, or by logging into your account at SFChronicle.com/account. Cancellation will become effective at the end of your billing period; refunds and credits will not be provided.
Q: Why did the price of my subscription change?
A: Pricing is always subject to change. Additionally, promotional prices are not continuous. If you’d like to discuss the price of your subscription, please contact our Member Services team at 800-310-2455. Business hours are from 6:30am–2:30pm, Monday through Friday, 6:30am–10:30am on Saturday, and 8:00am–11:00am on Sunday. Or you can email homedelivery@sfchronicle.com.
Please remember that all online and home delivery subscriptions continue until cancelled. They will automatically renew and we will send you a bill prior to that renewal. If you’re on EZPay the payment method you provided will be charged automatically for the renewal and you should receive a notification prior to the charge indicating the price of the renewal. Charges for premium or bonus days (see above) may be reflected in a shortened subscription term.
Q: I had a previous subscription. How do I get a refund of the balance?
A: If your prior subscription was not restarted, and you have a brand new subscription with us, you can contact our Subscriber Services team to inquire about the balance by calling 800-310-2455. Business hours are from 6:30am–2:30pm, Monday through Friday, 6:30am–10:30am on Saturday, and 8:00am–11:00am on Sunday. Or you can email homedelivery@sfchronicle.com. If your prior subscription was restarted, all remaining credit would’ve been applied to the new billing period.
Q: What is the EZPay program? How does it save me time and money?
A: Our EZPay continuous service program is a convenient method of paying your subscription automatically. You provide your credit card information and we will automatically charge your card each time you come up for renewal until you cancel, allowing you to enjoy many conveniences including no more envelopes, stamps or having to remember to mail your payment.
Q: What payment methods can I use?
A: At this time, our Subscriber Services site can take credit/debit card payments if the card has the Visa, MasterCard, Discover or American Express logo. By mail, you can make checks payable to San Francisco Chronicle and send them in with the remit slip portion of your bill. Over the phone, a Subscriber Services representative can take credit or debit cards for one-time payments. For EZPay enrollments over the phone we can only take credit cards. Debit cards require written authorization, such as the form on the back of your renewal bill or using the EZPay sign-up option on the Subscriber Services site.
Q: Where can I update my EZPay payment information?
A: You can update your EZPay information in Subscriber Services by selecting the Change EZPay option.
Q: Where can I update my billing address?
A: You can update your billing address in Subscriber Services by selecting the Change Billing Address option. You can also contact our Subscriber Services team at 800-310-2455. Q: How do I purchase back copies of the newspaper?
A: The last 30 days of The Chronicle are available at the front security counter, which is located at the 901 Mission Street entrance of The Chronicle building at the corner of 5th Street and Mission Street in San Francisco. Daily papers may be purchased for $3.00 and Sunday papers may be purchased for $3.00 with the exception of special editions, which may be priced higher. To purchase copies online, visit the San Francisco Chronicle Store. The store has a 90 day archive. Copies of articles older than 90 days, but printed since January 1, 1995 are available in the archives on SFGATE. SFChronicle.com has an archive of content going back to its inception in March of 2013.
You can purchase single digital copies of the paper through PressReader.com. Those archives go back about two months. These copies are a print replica, similar to the e-Edition and can be downloaded as a PDF. Additionally, the replica e-Edition (available to subscribers) has a 30-day archive.
Q: Are there any special programs for teachers?
A: The Chronicle Newspaper in Education program is a great way for teachers to put extra learning power into the classroom. We provide free access to the replica e-Edition through NIEOnline.com. You can learn more and sign up for the service at NIEOnline.com/sfchronicle.
Q: Does The Chronicle contain recycled paper?
A: Yes. While there is no Federal Law requiring the use of recycled newsprint, California state law mandates that 50% of the newsprint used must contain at least 40% recycled fiber content. 2001 was the last year in the gradual increase of state mandated recycled content (from 30% when the law began in 1994 to the current cap of 50%). The percentage of newsprint (with at least 40% recycled fiber content) used by the San Francisco Chronicle:

– 50% in 2002

– 35% in 1996
– 30% in 1994
The San Francisco Chronicle is produced using the flexographic printing process. The "flexographic" process, unlike the "offset" process used by the majority of other papers (USA Today, NY Times, LA Times, etc.) is known for its inherent environmental benefits. These benefits include (a) the use of water based inks (eliminating the need for petroleum-based cleaners and extenders, eliminating ink rub-off and set-off, reduced show through, etc.) and (b) the ability to use lighter basis-weight (thinner) newsprint. Offset uses 30 lb and 32 lb newsprint, while flexo uses 27.7 lb newsprint.
Our newsprint comes from the Pacific Northwest and Canada, and it is produced from wood chips and other by-products of the lumber/timber industries. Trees are not cut-down specifically for newsprint.
As stated earlier, our ink is water-based and is environmentally friendly. The pigments used to color the inks are free of heavy metals and toxic products. We are completely safe to use as compost.

Q: How can I look at an old article?
A: Most content published from 1995 and on are available in the archives on SFGATE. SFChronicle.com has an archive of content going back to its inception in March of 2013. A 60-day archive of back copies of the print edition can be purchased at the San Francisco Chronicle Store. You can purchase single digital copies of the paper through PressDisplay.com. Those archives go back 14 days. These copies are formatted like the e-Edition and downloaded as a PDF. Subscribers may also access the e-Edition’s 30-day archive. Additionally, newspaper archives are provided to subscribers by NewsBank and can be found at SFChronicle.com/archive. Some public libraries may also carry microfiche archives. Inquire at your local or main branch to learn more.

Q: Why can I see some stories for free?
A: The SFChronicle.com website employs a "metered paywall" technology that allows new users and customers to sample some of our great stories before buying access or a subscription.
Q: How do I access the e-Edition?
A: If you’re registered on Subscriber Services you can login there and then click the “Today’s e-Edition” option at the top-right of the page. If you are receiving the daily email to remind you of the e-Edition’s availability, it contains links to log you in. If you access the e-Edition from a desktop or laptop computer, you will be logged into the desktop edition. If you are accessing it from a mobile device, such as a tablet or smartphone, you will be directed to the mobile version of the e-Edition. While the content is the same, the extra features are different between the two versions.
Q: Is access to SFChronicle.com part of my current subscription, or do I have to pay an additional fee to access articles?
A: With the exception of the print only subscription, all other print and digital subscription options includes access to SFChronicle.com. Visit SFChronicle.com/activate to create a login (email and password).
Q: I don’t have a newspaper subscription, but I did purchase an in-app subscription to the San Francisco Chronicle app through my iTunes/AppleID or Google Play account. Do I qualify for Unlimited Digital Access?
A: San Francisco Chronicle app-only customers paying through their iTunes/Apple ID or Google Play account will need to order a subscription that includes Unlimited Digital Access. Visit SFChronicle.com/subscribe and choose one of the available subscription options. Once you have completed your purchase, please go to your Apple ID or Google Play profile to manage your in-app subscriptions and disable automatic renewal of your in-app subscription. If you choose not to switch to a subscription that included Unlimited Digital Access, it will not impact your ability to continue accessing the San Francisco Chronicle app.
Q: I subscribe to the San Francisco Chronicle on my Kindle eReader, does that include Unlimited Digital Access?
A: Not at this time. Please visit SFChronicle.com/subscribe for available offers in your area. Similarly, San Francisco Chronicle subscribers can not access the Amazon Kindle edition of the paper.
Q: What if I don’t want to pay for access? Can I still read SFChronicle.com for free?
A: No, but you can start a digital-only subscription for only 99¢ for the first month. Visit SFChronicle.com/subscribe and click the link for the 99¢ offer. SFChronicle.com is a complement to SFGATE, the Bay Area’s most widely-read local news website. It does not replace SFGATE, which will continue to be free and will be the go-to place for anyone looking to get purposeful, fast and immediate breaking news, or a quick taste of what is happening in San Francisco, at any given moment.
Q: How often is the content updated on SFChronicle.com?
A: The website is updated throughout the day, with stories frequently moving into and out of featured positions as circumstances and emerging facts drive the display of content. Links out to SFGATE are also easily accessible to provide frequently changing information, like traffic and weather.
Q: I like to share news stories I find with my social network. If I share a story from SFChronicle.com will my friends be able to read the full article?
A: Yes, as subscriber with Unlimited Digital Access, you can share stories via email, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Reddit and Google+ by clicking on the appropriate link in the article. Others will be able to read the article in full by using that shared link. Please note that you cannot just cut and paste the URL from the story.
Q: My family members share the paper at home. How can my family share their access to SFChronicle.com?
A: An SFChronicle.com subscription entitles you to five separate logins. Each of those logins can access SFChronicle.com. Go to SFChronicle.com/activate and follow the steps to create additional logins.
Q: Can I access archived stories on SFChronicle.com?
A: Yes, you can search for content on the site by clicking the magnifying glass found in the site’s navigation menu. You can also use the newspaper archives found here.
Q: What’s the difference between Ultimate Access and Unlimited Digital Access?
A: Since the launch of SFChronicle.com in 2013 we have used a few different phrases in our marketing of digital subscriptions. A subscription which includes access to all of our digital products is now called Unlimited Digital Access. You may have seen it referred to as All Digital Access, Ultimate Digital Access, Ultimate Access or a similar variation. Print subscriptions may be marketed as "Print + Digital," which means that they include Unlimited Digital Access.
Q: I travel frequently. What happens to my Unlimited Digital Access subscription then?
A: There’s no need to place your Unlimited Digital Access subscription on hold. You will have full access to our digital products such as SFChronicle.com and the digital replica San Francisco Chronicle e-Edition anytime and anywhere. If you have a print subscription, please make sure to place your delivery on hold when you travel.
Q: What is the best browser to use?
A: It is best to make sure that you have the current version of your preferred browser to navigate on the site.
Q: How do I cancel my in-app subscription?
A: You will need to log in to your iTunes/Apple ID or Google Play account, depending on the version of the app in which the purchase was made and manage your in-app subscriptions. The exact details may vary depending on the version of iOS or Android that you are running, but you should have the ability to disable the automatic renewal of your San Francisco Chronicle in-app subscription. Once disabled, the subscription would remain active until its current expiration date.
Q: Can I use the app on multiple devices?
A: You can activate the app on up to five devices. You will have to activate each device separately using the login you created for the app. See below for details on how to activate the app for each device.
1. After downloading and launching the app on an additional device, select the "$0 Current Subscriber" option and choose "Access the app with a current login" from the following screen.
2. On the following login page, you will need to enter the email and password you created when you initially set up your account.
Remember that the email associated with your account will need to be validated before you can enable additional devices. If you attempt to login before validating the account, the system will notify you and a link will appear on the page allowing you to request a new validation email.
Q: How do I print out an article from the app?
A: At this point it is not possible to print an article from the iPad.
Q: I tried subscribing within the app but got an error about having "already purchased" it.
A: This means there is already a monthly or annual subscription connected to your Apple ID. You may want to try the following steps to recover your subscription in order to use the app.
1. From the subscription offers page, tap "$0 Current Subscribers"
2. On the next screen, tap the orange, "Recover your subscription" link found below the two big buttons.
3. You should be prompted for your Apple ID password. This process seeks out the subscription purchase receipt to entitle your iPad.
4. Upon success you should get a "Congratulations!" screen. Tap the "Start Reading" button.
Q: Can I use the app on my device?
A: The San Francisco Chronicle app requires an Apple device running iOS 8 or later. We do not have a version for Android, Windows Mobile or other mobile operating systems at this time.
Q: The app is taking up a lot of space on my iPad. How do I clear up some room?
A: Tap the settings menu in the app (the cogwheel), then tap Data & Storage. You should see a Clear Data button which will remove all of the cached content from the app.
Print Home Delivery
Q: What can I do with The Chronicle plastic delivery bags?
A: There are a number of options! Some readers tell us that they reuse the bags in the following ways:
1. doggie pickup
2. collecting and disposing of snails and slugs from their yard
3. taking home food scraps from their workplace for their compost and/or worm bins
4. diaper disposal
If you have any suggestions for how to reuse the bags or places that recycle them, please send us feedback.
Some of our carriers also collect the bags to reuse them. Email or call Subscriber Services and ask the representative to request that the delivery service provider contact you.
Q: How can I place a vacation hold on my newspaper delivery?
A: To temporarily stop your newspaper delivery while you’re on vacation, please login to your account at our Subscriber Services website or use our automated phone system by calling 800-310-2455. Please note that SFChronicle.com and the Subscriber Services website use the same login information.
Q: How can I change the amount of days I receive my paper?
A: To change the frequency of delivery, please contact our Subscriber Services team at 800-310-2455. Business hours are from 6:30am–2:30pm, Monday through Friday, 6:30am–10:30am on Saturday, and 8:00am–11:00am on Sunday. Or you can email homedelivery@sfchronicle.com.
Q: How do I change my delivery address?
A: You can request a change of address in Subscriber Services by selecting the Change Delivery Address option. You can also contact our Subscriber Services team at 800-310-2455. Q: How do I report a problem with delivery?

Q: May I request a specific location for the paper delivery?
A: You can request placement instructions here in Subscriber Services by selecting the Change Delivery Preferences option. Q: I just ordered a subscription. When will my delivery begin?
A: Delivery will begin on the next available delivery day, which is determined by your frequency of delivery and the time at which you place your order. Digital-only subscriptions should start within the next two days, again depending on the time at which you placed your order.
Q: Can I still get the San Francisco Chronicle if I move out of the area?
A: Yes, there are two options to keep you in touch with our local news coverage.You may sign up for our Unlimited Digital Access subscription. Unlimited Digital Access includes our premium website, SFChronicle.com, the San Francisco Chronicle App and our e-Edition (an exact replica of printed edition). We also offer a mail subscription, where we can mail the newspaper to you.
You may also want to contact Subscriber Services to see if your new address is still within our home delivery footprint. We delivery to a large portion of Northern California as well as the Reno, NV area.
You can contact Subscriber Services to change your existing subscription or to order a mail subscription, if you’re a new subscriber. If you’re interested in subscribing, you can go to SFChronicle.com/subscribe to see our current offers.

Q: How do I make use of my enhanced member benefits?
A: Activate your membership at SFChronicle.com/activate. All activated subscribers are eligible for member benefits. If you have already completed the activation, visit SFChronicle.com/membership to keep up to date on current events and offers. Be sure to set your email preferences to receive notifications.
Q: What does it cost to be a member?
A: Our enhanced member benefits come at no additional cost to your paid subscription to the San Francisco Chronicle except for certain special member events with a discounted entrance fee.
Q: I don’t have a newspaper subscription, but I did purchase a subscription through the San Francisco Chronicle app. Do I qualify for access to membership benefits?
A: San Francisco Chronicle app-only customers paying through their iTunes/Apple ID account will need to subscribe to SFChronicle.com to have access. Visit SFChronicle.com/subscribe and choose one of the available subscription options. Once you have completed your purchase, please go to your Apple ID profile through iTunes or the Settings app on your device and turn off the automatic renewal of your San Francisco Chronicle app subscription. Logins and Contact Preferences
Q: Can I manage which emails I receive from the San Francisco Chronicle?
A: Absolutely! Once logged in, go to the Profile page. You should see the different email preferences on that page. The emails we send also contain unsubscribe and preferences links. Using those options will also update your email preferences for newsletters and other marketing.
Q: How can I change my email address?
A: You can change your email address by going to the Profile page and click the Edit button to update your profile. You can also, go through the activation process at SFChronicle.com/activate again to create up to a max of five logins. Member Services has the ability to disable logins in case you have ones using old/unavailable email addresses. You can change your iPad login from the Manage Subscription menu option within the app.
Q: How do I change my password?
A: Click the Edit button on the Profile page and you should see an option to change your password. You can also request a password reset email from any of the login prompts.
Q: I attempted to log into my account and received a message the system does not recognize my login information. What can I do?
A: Before gaining access to SFChronicle.com, you must be registered and activated in our system. To activate go to SFChronicle.com/activate or, from our Subscriber Services page click on the Activate link. You can always contact the Subscriber Services team to check if you’re registered and to verify your username (email address). If you have not registered, you can go through the Activation process by starting at SFChronicle.com/activate. If you subscribed online, the username you created is your login. If you’ve forgotten your password, there is a “forgot password” option on the login page for both Member Services and SFChronicle.com.
Q: Where can I use the login I created for my account?
A: Your login associated with an Unlimited Digital Access or print, home delivery with Unlimited Digital Access subscription can be used on SFChronicle.com (and, by extension, the e-Edition), and the Subscriber Services site. Currently, you need to maintain a separate login for the San Francisco Chronicle App. As of September 13, 2016, SFGATE uses the same login. A login created as part of an in-app subscription is only good for use within the app.
Q: What should I do if I try to register/activate my subscription and get a message that it cannot be found?
A: Typically this happens when the information does not match our database. To better assist you, please contact our Subscriber Services team at 800-310-2455. Business hours are from 6:30am–2:30pm, Monday through Friday, 6:30am–10:30am on Saturday, and 8:00am–11:00am on Sunday. Or you can email homedelivery@sfchronicle.com.
Q: I’ve already registered on SFGATE so I can manage my newsletters and make comments. Is my login the same for SFChronicle.com?
A: As of September 13, 2016, you can use the same login for both SFGATE and SFChronicle.com!
Q: I do not want to be contacted by the Chronicle with any promotional offers! How do I opt out of receiving phone calls, emails or mail offers from you?

A: The Chronicle online store allows you to purchase back issues from the past 60 days, commemorative issues, historical items and prints featuring our iconic covers and extensive coverage of Bay Area and worldwide events.
Q: How do you ship my order?
A: We ship most items to arrive in 10-15 business days. Items such as prints, plaques and posters are custom ordered and fulfilled by one of our partners, delivery of these items can take 20-30 business days. Estimated delivery dates may vary due to high volume. We ship via Fedex Smart Post, UPS 2 Day Air/UPS Ground or USPS depending on the package’s weight and dimensions. Once your order has shipped, you will receive an email providing your shipping date and tracking information.
Q: What if my order is damaged in shipping?
A: Our goal is to offer only the finest items for readers, members and Bay Area residents. Items that create a lasting legacy and provide years of enjoyment. If your order is damaged in shipping, you may return it in its original packaging for a prompt exchange. Returns will not otherwise be accepted or refunded for any reason. The photo will add approximately $170 to the total cost of the notice. The resolution of the photo should be a minimum of 300dpi, preferable formats are .tif or .jpg.
If you’re mailing the obit and wish to have a photo in the obit, please include the photo with the obit. Please indicate if you would like to have the photo returned to you.
