Let’s talk about the future of media delivery

DVB World 2022 took place at the Maison de la Poste in Brussels on Wednesday 18 May. The event was run as an unconference.

DVB World will be back in 2023. Watch this space!

DVB World 2022 was laser-focused on the topics and questions that were of most importance to the participants. This is because the event was run for the first time as an unconference, a highly interactive event format where the emphasis is on peer-to-peer learning and collaboration.

The feedback

“Very friendly and welcoming atmosphere, almost no direct sales pitches. Great format, inspiring.“
“Enthusiastic, smart people engaged in open discussion.“
“The unconference format worked very well. Every session I attended was relevant to my interests and I could have usefully attended many of the others.“
“The opportunity to network, listen and dream together.“
“An incredible venue and a well-organized and original event.“
“The best conference I have ever been to.“

The venue

The Maison de la Poste in Brussels is quite unlike any venue previously used for DVB World. Within its historic walls you find inviting spaces full of character, each refurbished with the help of world-renowned interior designers. And it sits right alongside the Gare Maritime, under whose breathtaking wooden atrium you can discover a newly emerging indoor city quarter. It’s all part of Tour & Taxis, a major urban regeneration project that is transforming this part of the city.

The Agenda

The agenda was created live on-site by the participants themselves. Around 25 sessions were pitched and added to the agenda, setting the scene for a day of intense exchanges across a range of hot topics.
Below we list the sessions that were on the DVB World 2022 agenda.

Object-based broadcasting • Designing an overarching DVB demo e.g. DVB @ IBC • Introduction of enhancement and scalability tools in DVB • DVB as THE video streaming standardization body • DVB Service List Registry • DVB writes and promotes its own specs. Should also promote other people’s specs. If so, how? • DVB-HB (Home Broadcast) – Transition Solutions to DVB-I Ecosystem • DVB-I and 5G-MAG, DVB-I over 5G System • Immersive & 6DoF in DVB • What can DVB learn from the ATSC 3.0 initiative and vice versa? / How to sell DVB? Beyond “Next Gen TV”? • DVB-I Plugfest • Dynamic Ad Insertion – Is it still for DVB or purely for OTT? • Measuring DVB-I? • Native IP: How do we, as the industry, bridge the IP gap between the connected and less connected world? • DVB-I: Is it ready for Primetime? • Dynamic Broadcast Multicast – Improve reliability & spectrum utilization • Energy-aware DVB service delivery and consumption • How could a DVB-I-over-broadcast profile improve the end-user UX? • How do I show the benefits of DVB-I? • Is DVB “FAST” (free ad-supported television) enough? • Scalable Video Coding • SD -> UHD, what/when is good enough? / How can DVB help guide through a multi codec world? • What should DVB deliver besides PDF? • What will TV services, devices and users look like in 2032, and what should DVB be doing towards that?

SUPPORTERS

Thanks to these companies for helping to make DVB World 2022 a success.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

To make it as easy as possible for those in our community to attend this event, we have lowered the registration fees considerably compared to previous DVB World conferences. The registration fee is €100 for non-members and €50 for those working for a DVB Member company.
If your company would like to provide additional support to the event and help us to offset the costs, you can select the “Supporter” option when registering (and bring two colleagues along to the event with you, among other benefits). See the next question for details.

As the event is an unconference, the programme will be developed on-site when the event begins. We’re reaching out to participants to learn more about the topics and sessions they’re keen to have included and will provide guidance on how they can ensure those things are discussed at the event. The actual agenda will be agreed by all participants on the day.

There will be time and space for everybody to contribute to the event. If you’d like to prepare a short presentation, let us know and we’ll advise you on what is possible.

Sure! Get in touch with us, tell us what you’d like to show, and we’ll discuss the options.

On the day itself, Wednesday 18 May, you should plan to be at the Maison de la Poste from 09:00 to 22:00. (If you’re arriving in Brussels that morning, it will be fine if you can’t make it until 10:00.) We will have a full programme of activities throughout the day, with plenty of food and drinks to keep energy levels topped up.

All participants are also invited to “break the ice” with us the night before, on Tuesday 17 May from 20:00 to 22:00, at the Gare Maritime Food Market.

No. This is a physical event that will be neither streamed nor recorded.

All those who wish to be involved with the event must register as either a participant or a supporter. This applies also to trade journalists, who are welcome to attend and participate. Anyone reporting publicly on the event should ensure that participants are not quoted without their permission – conversations will be “off the record” unless the contrary has been confirmed.

While DVB World is a one-day event this year, we know that many of our participants will arrive in Brussels the evening before or will have been attending meetings in the area. Our icebreaker is a chance to “break the ice” after a couple of years away from physical events. We’re gathering at the Gare Maritime to catch up with old friends and make new contacts.

If you arrive in Brussels in time to join us on Tuesday 17 May between 20:00 and 22:00, please do come along!

Keep it casual! (Or whatever works best for you.)

Why an Unconference?

This section explains why we chose to run DVB World 2022 as an unconference.

“Professionals attend conferences to learn things. Yet conference participants often say they learn more in the hallway than in formal sessions. Unconferences bring the hallway conversations back into the main tent by handing control to participants instead of experts on stage.”

Jay Cross, author of Informal Learning: Rediscovering the Natural Pathways That Inspire Innovation and Performance

A new approach

We believe now is the ideal time to try something new. We’re planning an event that puts the emphasis on meaningful conversations and real connections, after two years in which we have all been starved of human contact. By participating in this unconference, you can achieve several goals:

  1. Explore new ground-breaking ideas with fellow media-delivery experts
  2. Expand your network
  3. Discover new partnership opportunities
  4. Learn from and with others in your professional field

The day is designed with the support of a professional facilitator who brings many years of experience working in corporate and tech-related contexts.

At an unconference, the programme is created at the event itself, by the people who are there. It is your chance to ask for input, discuss challenges you face, explore new ideas and develop solutions together.

Join us in building the prototype for a new DVB World!
