Public Accountability

Health and Medical Research Charities of America partners with national nonprofits that can meet or exceed a standard of excellence for public accountability. Each charity that partners with HMR submits its program and financial documents for annual review and certification.

A Proven Performer

Since 1995, Health and Medical Research Charities of America has helped national health related causes expand their reach and engage with individuals like you. The donations given to HMR have been used to fund research for Alzheimer’s, diabetes, autism, autoimmune disorders, Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis and more. It’s helped research and treat mental health concerns like anxiety and OCD. It’s provided patient resources, public education and awareness, and has helped people at every stage of life.

Serving Large and Small Nonprofits

Although all of our nonprofit partners must have programs or services in at least 15 states, many of our partners are not household names. We are proud to work with nonprofits of any size and aim to provide a place where individuals can learn about the good work of lesser known organizations.

Our Leadership

HMR is governed by an all volunteer Board of Directors who
generously give their time and talent.

Tom Teasley
President

Tom Teasley was formerly Director of Pathways Hospice Foundation in Sunnyvale, California; National Director of Development for Project Inform, AIDS Treatment Advocates in San Francisco; Director of Development for Children Now and the Luther Burbank Center for the Arts.
He previously served as Associate Dean of Special Studies at Rhodes College; Director of Development and Alumni Relations for The New School for Social Research in New York City. Tom lives in Richmond, Virginia and enjoys travel, genealogy, and reading.

David Abrams
Secretary

David served for 28 years as the CEO of Hospice Foundation of America (HFA), a national charity that educates in end-of-life issues. David is a Vietnam veteran having served in the U.S. Marine Corps for six years. In addition to serving on the board of HMR, he currently volunteers as a mentor on the Broward County Veteran’s Court in Broward County, Florida. He has served on the National Community AIDS Partnership and was a director of the Miami-Dade Task Force for Battered Women.

Steve Patterson
Treasurer

Stephen enlisted in the Navy after high school and served a distinguished career as a naval officer before retiring after 24 years of Naval service. In 1997 he was employed with Mercy Medical Airlift as a Program Director and then Executive Vice President. He subsequently worked with or founded 3 other angel flight nonprofits to provide medical transport services to needy patients. Steve last served as the Purchasing Agent for the City of Norfolk, Virginia.

Cindy Schnieble
Member

Cindy is currently President of McKinney Community Development Corporation in McKinney, Texas. Before joining MCDC, Cindy served as CEO of Gilda’s Club North Texas, a non-profit organization that provides educational resources and support services to people affected by cancer. Prior to that she served as Vice President of the Susan G. Komen Foundation with responsibility for developing and implementing fund raising initiatives.

Mike Abrams
Member

Mike served in the Florida House of Representatives for 12 years representing the North Miami Beach/Aventura area. During his tenure in the legislature, he served as chair of the House Health Care Committee and House Health & Rehabilitative Services Subcommittee on Appropriations. After retiring from the legislature, Mike began a career in the private sector. Mike is now Partner, Co-Chair of Ballard Partners’ public policy team. In addition to serving on the board of HMR, he is a member of the University of Miami Board of Trustees.
