Approaching depression as a complex disorder with many different facets rather than all-or-nothing.

Depression confuses the mind, strips away hope, and causes people to blame themselves for an illness they never asked for. This book presents a revolutionary new understanding of the concept of depression and offers readers skills and strategies to manage it.

No longer is this a one-size-fits-all diagnosis, and antidepressants are no longer the one-size-fits-all treatment. Mood disorders are now seen to form a spectrum of problems, from common depression on one end to full bipolar disorder on the other. In between these extremes are multitudes of people who are on the middle of the mood spectrum, and this book is for them.

The first part of the book helps readers answer the question, “Where am I on the mood spectrum?” By laying the foundation for understanding this spectrum, Aiken and Phelps highlight the key distinctions that define unipolarity, bipolarity, hypomania, mania, and depression. Readers will be able to discern which definition best fits their experience, and use this understanding to learn which treatment methods will work best.

The authors also empower readers to look beyond antidepressants. They walk readers through new medications for the mood spectrum, and offer a guide to non-medication treatments that anyone can use on their own, from diet and lifestyle changes to natural supplements. The book also discusses other innovative technologies that can aid in recovery, including dawn simulators, mood apps, and blue-light filters.

This thoughtful and beneficial book will offer readers skills and strategies, as well as hope, in the face of debilitating mental challenges.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This work is filled with pragmatic, valuable information that helps readers figure out where they may be on the disorder spectrum, explains various symptoms of the disorder, provides handy self-diagnostic tests, and offers tips to assist readers in connecting with their physician. . . . A remarkable addition to the growing genre of mental health disorders and treatment that relates to the reality of how many patients with a mood disorder do not necessarily fit one end or another of the disorder spectrum."
Library Journal

"I highly recommend this book. . . . It provides excellent advice for all conceivable aspects of dealing with this illness―from being a patient, to their families (or places of work), and their care providers."
Metapsychology Online Reviews

"Presented primarily to help clients gain an understanding of their place on the mood spectrum, these tools have already found their way into my own thinking and practice. . . . Students, beginning social workers, and even seasoned ones will find much of value. . . . [A]ccessible to the person who experiences these conditions, but with enough depth and rigor to be engaging and valuable to clinicians. I have recommended it to several colleagues, will prescribe it to several clients, and have awarded it precious space on my clinical shelves."
The New Social Worker

"This informative book is easy to read and provides practical information for patients and families. . . . I would also recommend this book to mental health trainees―it is useful for them to know what patients know."
David L. Dunner, MD, FACPsych, Journal of Psychiatric Practice

"Perfect book for the patient. Great information and many pearls, including how to help your doctor help you. I highly recommend it."
Robert M. Post, MD, Head, Bipolar Collaborative Network, Professor of Psychiatry, George Washington School of Medicine, former Chief of the NIMH's Biological Psychiatry Branch

"Drs. Aiken and Phelps have provided a great yet easy-to-read book for those with depressive and other symptoms that have burdened them and their loved ones for too long. When antidepressants and therapy alone don't work,
Bipolar, Not So Much offers insights into what may be the real diagnosis. This informative book gives important clues to better identify the different shades of depressive and bipolar disorders. From those clues, it guides people towards the steps they need to recover. It includes up-to-date reviews of medications, natural and lifestyle approaches, as well as useful tips for living more effectively with mood problems in relationships and at work."
Richard Weisler, MD, Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Adjunct Associate Professor of Psychiatry, Duke University Medical Center

"Explaining the concept of the mood disorder spectrum can be a formidable task for any psychiatric provider. Kudos to Drs. Aiken and Phelps for addressing this challenge by providing an easily accessible understanding of the mood disorder spectrum and its treatment, including how to live well with the diagnosis by offering lifestyle tips and numerous online resources. This will be my go to book for patients and their families!"
Dana Hillyer, Psychiatric Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialist, APRN

"This book is packed with information that will enable patients to understand their bipolar spectrum disorder, how to collaborate with their provider, and how to use important methods of self-management of their moods. My work is greatly enhanced when patients come armed with this knowledge. Families and patients will appreciate the informal tone of this book and the demystification of these concepts."
Robert Caldwell, MD

"This book is a must-read for all psychiatrists and therapists who work with those on the mood spectrum as well as their families. The authors are thought leaders who are able to translate their clinical experiences and the medical literature into language all can understand."
Tammas Kelly, MD, Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, George Washington University, Washington DC

The most enlightening and readable book on mood disorders I have ever read. Drs. Aiken and Phelps take the complex topic of mood disorders, from depression to bipolar, and clearly explain them in terms of a broad spectrum. Through charts, characteristics, and clinical examples, a person can understand where they are on the scale.
I was diagnosed with bipolar 30 years ago, when it was referred to as manic-depression. What little reading material was available on bipolar, and other mood disorders, was written by professionals, for professionals, in technical language. What I like about this book is the authors explain the difficulty of a black and white diagnosis in language everyone can understand.

The book contains information on medications, treatments, traditional and cutting edge therapies, and most important, self-care. Aiken and Phelps emphasize that living with a mood disorder isn't simply a matter of diagnosis and medication. They delve into the significance of sleep, light, diet, exercise, and triggers that might indicate you are entering a serious episode. A chapter is devoted to relationships and work.
Over the years, I had to learn by trial and error how to maneuver the stormy waters of bipolar I. The gift of this book is that it spells out thoroughly and compassionately, how persons dealing with mood disorders, can not only stay afloat, but also lead healthy and productive lives. Bipolar, Not So Much, is a treasure trove of information for mental health professionals, loved ones, and people like me, who deal with a mood disorder.

This book saved my life. Literally.

Also, if you read this book, you’ll know more about bipolar than the majority of doctors. It’s a very interesting and academic read, though entertaining and even compassionate. It includes actual studies and research on bipolar and how to help it, as well as charts of information on various meds often used or previously tested on for bipolar. It even has good information on non medicinal aid for bipolar. All in all, I’d seriously recommend this book to anyone. It has so much to offer! It even gives useful information on other disorders and conditions.

Surprised it had new info. I work in mental health and have something in between bipolar 2 and major depression. Helped me to better understand and come out of denial a bit. Would recommend to people like me /someone who doesn’t quite meet criteria for full bipolar diagnosis but has enough ups and downs and doesn’t seem to respond great to antidepressants. Good for family too.

As someone who struggled silently for years, it was wonderful to find this book that not only treats bipolar like the illness it is (instead of a moral failure) but also includes some of the best information I have read about the disorder. This book covers comprehensive treatment options including prescription meds, over the counter meds, vitamins, light and other therapies, exercise, food and therapy. This book will give you more information and encouragement than most mental health professionals can. If you have been diagnosed, or have a family whose been diagnosed, read this book. And take care of yourself.

This is an excellent book with a terrible name. One of his principle ideas is that it is a convenience to talk of Bipolar 1 and Bipolar 2 but much more accurate to see it as a spectrum and/or a cluster of symptoms... thus bipolarity can manifest in very different ways. He writes well and the book is ultimately encouraging. Highly recommended

Not everyone can get flex time & work only when creative. The question should you have a doctor or not shows how far removed the writer is from bipolar absenteeism, disability and rules that must be adhered to in the workplace. Growing acceptance and less stigma was found in the DSM and ADA? Really? If the writer would like to announce a negative mental status as a test, I think he would see a different picture. Yes the book is written in an upbeat fashion, with tests and drug updates.

If you have treatment resistant depression or are possibly bipolar, this is the book to read.
It does haven a slant on the topic of bipolar 2. If you have bipolar 1, you may want to skip it.
Bipolar 2 is marked with recurring treatment resistant depression with short duration hypomania. This hypomania can manifest itself as either euphoric or dysphoric.

Aiken and Phelps really break down what bipolar 2 is in a way that is understandable to anyone.
Evidence based treatment possibilities are presented well. No BS, no unproven treatments are presented.

Would highly recommend reading this book!

It’s the most comprehensive book on bipolar that I’ve read. This book is easy to read and packed with relevant information - it goes over things that many books don’t cover in depth, such as mixed states and hypomania. It covers all aspects of the disorder and treatment. and does so in a way that captivates interest.

Helpful for family /friends as well in helping understand the mind of someone with a bipolar diagnosis.

Honestly I'm addicted to this book. Since being diagnosed with a form of unspecified, mixed state, rapid cycling bipolar, my psychiatrist recommended this book to me. I understand my condition so much more. I'm only about a third of the way through but it's been an amazing read so far, I'd recommend it to anyone with depression and moods disorders including bipolarity. Or anyone wanting to learn about all the different forms of bipolar and depression. 100% recommended

My psychiatrist recommended this book to read to learn more about my bipolar disorder, it's been insightful and helpful. Really interesting read for those who want to learn more about their disorder, get more of a grasp of where they are at on the 'scale' of things or for someone who has someone close to them who has bipolar and wants to understand more about this disorder. Highly recommend.

This book is the best book I have found on the subject of mood disorders. Most books on Bipolar seem to focus on Bipolar 1 or 2, with little information about conditions such as rapid cycling which I have suffered from for years. This book goes into much more detail about the variations of Bipolar and their treatment, and was long overdue!
