Making a Donation of Cryptocurrency to GiveWell

Thanks for your interest in donating cryptocurrency to GiveWell!

You can direct your donation to our Maximum Impact Fund, the All Grants Fund, unrestricted support, or one or more of our top charities.

Cryptocurrency donations are non-refundable in most cases, and we sell them for USD shortly after we receive them. If you have any questions about how to donate cryptocurrency, please email us at donations@givewell.org before making your donation.

Please complete our cryptocurrency donation form below prior to sending your coins to the appropriate wallet listed on the right. Doing so will:

  • enable us to match your contact information with crypto we receive and send you a receipt;
  • allow you to specify your preference for how we allocate your donation; and
  • reduce the administrative cost associated with processing your donation.

Donations received without an accompanying donation form submission will be treated as anonymous donations to our unrestricted fund, which we may use to either support our operating expenses (most likely) or grant out to charities at our discretion.

We can currently accept donations of the cryptocurrencies listed to the right. After completing this form, please use our wallet addresses listed on the right side of this page to complete your transfer (you’ll still be able to see them after you complete the form). Please make sure to copy the wallet addresses exactly, as donations sent to the wrong wallet will be lost permanently.

If you would like to donate in a cryptocurrency not listed, please email us at donations@givewell.org. We can generally create wallets for other types of coins supported on Coinbase.

Please note that GiveWell’s wallets are managed by Coinbase, and they may not be compatible with smart contracts, mirror essays, or other special arrangements.

The below information is provided for informational purposes only and does not constitute tax, legal, or financial advice. We recommend speaking to your tax accountant, lawyer, or financial advisor for specific tax, legal, or financial advice for your situation.

For charitable contributions of cryptocurrency over $500, you may need to file IRS Form 8283 to claim a tax deduction. (If the value is over $5,000, you may also be required to get an appraisal of the assets donated.).

To have GiveWell sign your 8283 form, please reach out to finance@givewell.org.
