Excellent recorder worth the investment

I have Nikon Z6 and started getting interested in making videos; Z6 has great video recording capability, but I would like to further improve the sound upon Z6's built-in mic and preamp. Therefore, I added a Rode Stereo Videomic X (SVMX) set at 20 dB gain and directly output 3.5mm TRS to camera, sound level at Z6 set at 8; This combo just blew me away with its clarity, openness and rich sound. I like to explore the full potential of this stereo mic's balanced outputs and further lower the noise floor with external preamp, thus bought Sound devices MixPre-3 II. This recorder's size is perfect for DSLR. I use Sound devices mini- XLR to XLR cables to connect Rode SVMX to MixPre-3 II. These cables are nicely made.First, I noticed the ground loop noise having Z6 directly sit on top of MixPre-3 II connected by MixPre's ¼" screw, while MixPre outputs to camera via 3.5mm TRS. I found two ways to get around it, one is to add a ball head between MixPre and Z6. The ball head has non-metal ball thus isolates Z6 case ground from MixPre; Another way is to use an inline ground loop isolator. Both methods will work. A-B comparison showed there are some sound quality compromises through inline ground loop isolator; Thus I tried ball head first since I wanted to take advantage of MixPre’s Kashmir preamp, however it is rather bulky to move around; Recording Stereo L R and Iso tracks are like taking RAW pictures; The sound quality recorded by Z6 and MixPre using this setup is nice, noise is further reduced, detailed, open, dynamic with nice sound stage and separation; The only draw back is the low ends, the dynamics of the lows diminished significantly compared to the tracks recorded by Mixpre! Therefore, I swap out camera recorded sound track with Mixpre sound track in post; Since camera track serves as scratch track and will be replaced, I end up using isolator since setup's compact size / weight.I turn Z6's amplification to lowest level and adjust MixPre’s output to match the tone; In advanced mode I link channel 1-2 as stereo, set the gain at 50 and use channel 1 fader to control both channels' level on the fly; MixPre is connected to Z6 with HDMI cable and using Z6’s timecode to control MixPre’s recording, so when I press record button on Z6 the MixPre will start recording and when I stop recording on Z6 the MixPre will stop, However, there is small time lag and needs to be aligned in post. I have to be very careful not to break the micro HDMI connector, which is rather small.The menu system is intuitive and the small touch screen display is surprisingly responsive. The headphone amp is excellent, I tested Sennheiser HD650 and MixPre has no problem driving this 300 Ohms headphone to full dynamics. The sound quality rivals my Audio-gd R2R11 with slightly more fluid highs; By the way this device can get slight warm; The USB connectivity to computer works fine; I tested MixPre recording music from Macbook pro 15 playback using usb-c connection, the sound quality is well preserved without significant loss (if listen carefully there are slight differences).This recorder is power hungry like Nikon Z6 and AA won't last long for continuous recording; Pretty quickly I learned that I need to get MX-L Mount battery adaptor. With L batteries I can do long recording without worrying about power. The battery sled and the MX-L mount adaptor are made of good quality polymer. FYI MixPre-3 II is assembled in Taiwan. The supplied usb-c cable has nice shielding and feels robust. Overall, this is a piece of jewel as result of extensive engineering and years of industrial leading experience, well worth the investment.Update: Wife did some voice only recording with MKH416 + Mixpre-3 II of her favorite poems. Mixpre-3 II was connected to computer and take in background music via usb-c (channel 1, 2) and 416 as voice channel 3. 416 + mixpre-3 II produces very low noise floor and excellent clarity; This mic appeared to be a good match for her mid tone heavy voice; The end result is excellent; there are plenty details, warmness and intimacy presented in the voice; The ergonomics of mixpre is nice, with a few trials and errors she learned how to use faders to mix background / voice, record, playback;The more we use the more we appreciate the built in limiter; The analog limiter on this device works really well and sounds very natural; I have not yet taken advantage of the 32 bits capability and the limiter really save the day;Wingman app is easy to pair and can be handy as additional display and record / stop control. I keep SD card in and use MixPre's File Transfer function to download files to computer; I also downloaded Sound Devices's free Wave Agent software (Installation takes a few more steps than usual on Mac OS, Sound Device's instructions is helpful); Wave Agent is useful to split polyphonic files to stereo or iso track wav files; Overall, other than a few minor compromises (AA battery life, power switch location, micro HDMI connector), this is a feature rich, high quality portable recorder;
