European Parliament were desperate to keep first visit to Taiwan last year under wraps because Raphael Glucksmann, also sanctioned by Beijing, was on board. His office were worried about sanctioned MEP flying over Chinese airspace (nothing happened) scmp.com/news/china/dip

The Chinese government today dismissed my report saying Beijing had asked 4 big EU member states to meet Xi Jinping in November as "fake news". Asked about Beijing's denial, my sourcing confirms that these approaches have indeed been made - informal invitations at this point
