NEW • Distribution Release: Linux Mint 21 |

The Linux Mint team have announced a new version of its Ubuntu-based distribution, Linux Mint 21. The new version swaps out the old Blueberry Bluetooth software in favour of Blueman, improvements have been made to the Sticky Notes application to make it easier to identify different notes, and there is a new process monitor which will indicate to the user when automated tasks are consuming system resources. "Automated tasks are great to keep your computer safe but they can sometimes affect the system's performance while you're working on it. A little process monitor was added to Linux Mint to detect automated updates and automated system snapshots running in the background. Whenever an automated task is running the monitor places an icon in your system tray. Your computer might still become slow momentarily during an update or a snapshot, but with a quick look on the tray you'll immediately know what's going on." A more complete list of changes can be found in the release announcement for each edition (Cinnamon, MATE, Xfce) and in the What's New documents (Cinnamon, MATE, Xfce). 4MLinux is a miniature Linux distribution focusing on four capabilities: maintenance (as a system rescue live CD), multimedia (for playing video DVDs and other multimedia files), miniserver (using the inetd daemon), and mystery (providing several small Linux games). The project's latest stable release introduces a number of changes to media support and adds encrypted volume utilities. "As always, the new major release has some new features. Legacy MPlayer with MEncoder are now available out of the box (HyperVC can be used as MEncoder’s GUI for transcoding). Many system-wide changes has been done to improve 3D support (both on real and virtual machines). QEMU (with its GUI called AQEMU) as well as TrueCrypt (encryption utility) are now also included. New games: GNOME Mahjongg (available out of the box) and Entombed! (available as a downloadable extension). And finally, a preliminary support for NVM Express interface has been added (currently it seems to work well in VirtualBox)." Additional details can be found in the release announcement. OPNsense is a FreeBSD-based specialist operating system (and a fork of pfSense) designed for firewalls and routers. The project's latest release is OPNsense 22.7 which includes an updated FreeBSD base and PHP 8: "22.7, nicknamed "Powerful Panther", features the upgrade to FreeBSD 13.1, PHP 8.0, Phalcon 5, stacked VLAN and Intel QuickAssist (QAT) support, DDoS protection using SYN cookies, MVC/API pages for IPsec status and Unbound overrides, new APCUPSD and CrowdSec plugins plus much more. LibreSSL flavour is scheduled for removal at the end of this series and will likely receive no further maintenance. Software failing to work properly starting with Tor will have its plugin removed from the flavour from now on to be able to keep updating the software to their latest versions in the OpenSSL flavour. The next major upgrade will automatically transition to the OpenSSL flavour, but we would encourage everyone to switch between 22.7.x for the least amount of possible impact." Additional information can be found in the project's release announcement. Download (SHA256): OPNsense-22.7-OpenSSL-dvd-amd64.iso.bz2 (346MB). |

NEW • Development Release: OpenMandriva Lx 5.0 Technical Preview |

Cristina Sgubbi has announced the availability of the first development snapshot of OpenMandriva Lx 5.0, an upcoming new version of the project's desktop-oriented Linux distribution featuring the latest Plasma desktop: "Here is the technical preview of the upcoming OpenMandriva Lx ROME (Rolling) and also the 5.0 'Rock' snapshot. Installing Rolling is pretty much the same as installing Rock. There is an auto-updater tool in ABF (OpenMandriva Automated Build Farm) which has been kept turned off for longer that we anticipated so Rolling has not been getting many upgrades recently and has not really been 'rolling'. This is because developers have been making some big changes to toolchain and system packages in the Cooker branch (where the upgrades come from) that would make it unsafe and unwise at this time. Some of the major changes: Python 3.11; Java 20; Linux kernel 5.18.12 (Clang kernel as default, with the option to install GCC kernel easily from the om-welcome module); the latest and brightest KDE products - KDE Frameworks 5.96.0, Plasma Desktop 5.25.3, KDE Gear 22.04.2; many software upgrades." Continue to the release announcement for further details. Download (MD5, pkglist): OpenMandrivaLx.5.0-TP-plasma.x86_64.iso (2,416MB). As usual, an image optimised for the current range of AMD processors is also available: OpenMandrivaLx.5.0-TP-plasma.znver1.iso (2,490MB). |

Andrew David Wong has announced the release of Qubes OS 4.1.1, a "patch" release of the project's security-oriented operating system for single-user desktop computing. This version upgrades the Fedora template to version 36 and the Linux kernel to version 5.15: "We're pleased to announce the stable release of Qubes 4.1.1. This release aims to consolidate all the security patches, bug fixes, and upstream template OS upgrades that have occurred since the initial Qubes 4.1.0 release in February. Our goal is to provide a secure and convenient way for users to install (or reinstall) the latest stable Qubes release with an up-to-date ISO. If you are already using Qubes 4.1.0 or Qubes 4.1.1-rc1, then you should simply update normally (which includes upgrading any EOL templates you might have) in order to make your system essentially equivalent to this stable Qubes 4.1.1 release. No special action is required on your part. Qubes 4.1.1 includes numerous updates over the initial 4.1.0 release, in particular: 4.1.0 dom0 updates to date; Fedora 36 template (upgraded from Fedora 34); Linux kernel 5.15 (upgraded from 5.10)." See the release announcement for more details. Download (mirrors): Qubes-R4.1.1-x86_64.iso (5,523MB, SHA512, signature, torrent, pkglist). |
