This past academic year, students at @stanfordeducation and @stanfordeng worked with @cantorarts staff and the Blind Posse — a Bay Area grassroots group aimed at improving access to art for residents who are blind or have low vision — to develop innovations for vision-impaired Cantor visitors. Their ideas? Smartphone apps with audio narration about the art, haptic experiences, and a 3D replica of Rodin’s The Thinker that visitors are welcome to touch. Learn more at the link in bio.

@lyricmchenryartsfellows work at the intersection of art and social justice for the summer with support from @IDAstanford and the Lyric McHenry Community Arts Fund. This is our third cohort of fellows! We are proud of their continued contributions.

Tyler Newman is a product design major using the fellowship to work with media company @staymacro and arts and justice org @bldpwr

Victoria Sampors Chiek is working with KUDU Studios creating projects that increase visibility for Cambodian history, culture, news, environment, wildlife, politics, and more through film.

Tristyn McClure Thomas will be working in NYC with Lucien Smith, founder of Serve the People, which prioritizes fostering a diverse community of student artists to share and discuss their art.

Sequoiah Blaire Hippolyte is completing their fellowship in Los Angeles working with cinema company Sunhaus

Kiara T. Dunbar will be working in NYC with Annalise Lockhart, award-winning filmmaker and Stanford Alum.

Looking for some summer reading recommendations? The new novel Counterfeit, by Stanford alum Kirstin Chen, follows two former Stanford roommates who reconnect after 20 years to run a counterfeit luxury handbag operation. It’s a pick for @reesesbookclub and The New York Times raves, “Counterfeit is an entertaining, luxurious read — but beneath its glitz and flash, it is also a shrewd deconstruction of the American dream and the myth of the model minority.”

Announcing our 2022 artist grantees! VPA Senior Grants support the burgeoning arts-related careers of recent Stanford graduates pursuing independent projects during the first six months after graduation.

Cameron Mirhossaini @cameronmirh writes THE WAY TO THE BREAD, a novella exploring the present-day, psychological consequences of forced nomadic sedentarization one hundred years ago in Iran. Isaiah “Zay” Smith’s @notzaysmith CHURCH WALLS recontextualizes Black American pew figurines into an AR and new media diorama centering Black identity and its relationship to the “Black Church”. Danika Lyle @danika.lyle is developing WORK-LIFE MALICE, a comedic screenplay and radio drama satirizing the corporate experience in the world of a super villain’s HQ. Omar Howaida El-Sabrout @el_sabrout investigates transplantation, ugliness, and queerness through site-specific sculptures in DOVECOTES DOMICILES.

🤪 Still catching our breath and catching up on highlights after the whirlwind of spring quarter! Our first Denning Visiting Artist Fund awardees *finally* made it to campus this spring after their residencies were postponed from 2020! Turkish oud player and composer Necati Çelik, co-hosted by the Abbasi Program in Islamic Studies and the Department of Music, taught a course for students in the Ottoman Music Ensemble, culminating in a year-end performance at Dinkelspiel Auditorium.

Indian photographer Gauri Gill (MFA ’02), co-hosted by the Department of Art and Art History and the Center for South Asia, conducted critiques with MFA students and hosted an open studio, sharing her process as she worked on three book projects.

The Stanford Visiting Artist Fund, established in 2019 in honor of Roberta Bowman Denning, brings renowned artists to the university to deeply engage with faculty and students in departments and programs across the campus. The endowed program will continue to fund one artist each year. 🤞 for no more COVID delays!

Congratulations to @alexandra__stergiou and @connorleeok (both MFA DocFilm ’22), whose short films are featured in The New Yorker Documentary series this month! Stergiou’s “The Act of Coming Out” blends real life and performances by queer and trans actors to achieve an uncanny emotional resonance as the film asks, “What is the role of performance in the stories we tell about ourselves in our lives?” O’Keefe’s “Imagine A Body” is an evocative take on the varied experiences of transmasculine people taking testosterone in order to medically transition.
