Subscribe to the This Month in Education newsletter - learn from others and share your stories[edit]

Dear community members,

Greetings from the EWOC Newsletter team and the education team at Wikimedia Foundation. We are very excited to share that we on tenth years of Education Newsletter (This Month in Education) invite you to join us by subscribing to the newsletter on your talk page or by sharing your activities in the upcoming newsletters. The Wikimedia Education newsletter is a monthly newsletter that collects articles written by community members using Wikimedia projects in education around the world, and it is published by the EWOC Newsletter team in collaboration with the Education team. These stories can bring you new ideas to try, valuable insights about the success and challenges of our community members in running education programs in their context.

If your affiliate/language project is developing its own education initiatives, please remember to take advantage of this newsletter to publish your stories with the wider movement that shares your passion for education. You can submit newsletter articles in your own language or submit bilingual articles for the education newsletter. For the month of January the deadline to submit articles is on the 20th January. We look forward to reading your stories.

Older versions of this newsletter can be found in the complete archive.

Looking for some account info[edit]

Hello, I am not sure if this is on topic for this forum but I think it is on topic for this site...

I would like to see and control my logons from other devices. I've been looking at some WM sites this last couple of weeks and I keep getting notification bells without any notifications and this has happened to me before, a few years ago, less frequently.

It occurred to me that, sometimes, when I visit a WMF site I haven't visited before or rarely visit, my notification bells light up.

So now I just want to check if I am logged in on other devices. Any way of doing that? Any way of making it possible to do that without bothering bureaucrats? ~^\\\.rT'{~ g 12:27, 21 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@RTG: Bureaucrats don't even have that authority. Do you have the Show notifications from other wikis option in Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-echo or Special:GlobalPreferences#mw-prefsection-echo on? NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 12:51, 21 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh:Yes that is on but I would need it on as I sometimes leave a comment or make an edit on any site. I edit and discuss pictures on Commons sometimes so I feel the need to communicate, not very often, but to any of the sites. And sometimes I might make an entry to the dictionary or discuss something on Wikiversity, that type of thing. So it would not really suit me to turn notifications off. For instance here is a discussion on Meta, if someone pings me I would want notified. ~^\\\.rT'{~ g 13:12, 21 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@RTG: I'm not telling you to turn that off. It happens to me sometimes too; if I receive a notification while having multiple tabs (at multiple wikis), reading one in a tab will cause the rest to disappear, since crosswiki notifications will not be displayed after being read. Is that what you're experiencing? NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 13:19, 21 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh:No, I got a notification when you pinged me now. I open it, if I am on the Meta site it appears at the top. If I am on another site it appears lower down under "global", and that is all fine. But sometimes my notification bells light up and there is no ping or anything else, top or bottom of the list. I open "All notifications" and check the sites and there is no new notification. Also when I visit a WMF site for the first time my notification bells light up (possibly only for that site), but they light up and I think it is something to do with new cookies. So when it lights up but I have not visited a new site... I am wondering... sometimes new cookies trigger notification lights, right? So I want to check and even control my logons from other sites. It's standard practice on a lot of social media sites now since a long time so hopefully it would be a reasonable request if it is not already possible. For instance if you went to your account pages in Facebook it will list for you every device that has an active cookie, every device that has logged on, and give you the option to log them out. I'd like one of those on WMF account pages please. ~^\\\.rT'{~ g 13:48, 21 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
IIRC there is a Phab task for that. Can't find it for now. NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 14:03, 21 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, well thanks then o/ ~^\\\.rT'{~ g 14:11, 21 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Desktop Improvements update[edit]

Making this the new default

Hello. I wanted to give you an update about the Desktop Improvements project, which the Wikimedia Foundation Web team has been working on for the past few years. Our work is almost finished! 🎉

We would love to see these improvements become the default for readers and editors across all wikis. In the coming weeks, we will begin conversations on more wikis, including yours. 🗓️ We will gladly read your suggestions!

The goals of the project are to make the interface more welcoming and comfortable for readers and useful for advanced users. The project consists of a series of feature improvements which make it easier to read and learn, navigate within the page, search, switch between languages, use article tabs and the user menu, and more. The improvements are already visible by default for readers and editors on more than 30 wikis, including Wikipedias in French, Portuguese, and Persian.

The changes apply to the Vector skin only, although it will always be possible to revert to the previous version on an individual basis. Monobook or Timeless users will not notice any changes.

The newest features
  • Table of contents - our version is easier to reach, gain context of the page, and navigate throughout the page without needing to scroll. It is currently tested across our pilot wikis. It is also available for editors who have opted into the Vector 2022 skin.
  • Page tools - now, there are two types of links in the sidebar. There are actions and tools for individual pages (like Related changes) and links of the wiki-wide nature (like Recent changes). We are going to separate these into two intuitive menus.
How to enable/disable the improvements
  • It is possible to opt-in individually in the appearance tab within the preferences by selecting "Vector (2022)". Also, it is possible to opt-in on all wikis using the global preferences.
  • On wikis where the changes are visible by default for all, logged-in users can always opt-out to the Legacy Vector. There is an easily accessible link in the sidebar of the new Vector.

Global Unblock[edit]

Message:: Please help me:: Dear Stewards, First time - the request was not granted - https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Steward_requests/Global/2022-w09#Global_lock_for_E.Imanoff ,

The second request too - was not granted https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Steward_requests/Global/2022-w14#Global_lock_for_E.Imanoff ,

Third time - It is clear that to file a complaint again 6 days after the second appeal is to disregard the steward's decision, which is similar to vandalism. Serious action should be taken against the Turkish user (nicknamed Kadı) who created this unpleasant situation, perhaps his intention was to block me in advance, so he repeatedly sent block requests without any serious reason. It is like accepting a request by negotiating with someone. https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Steward_requests/Global/2022-w15#Global_lock_for_E.Imanoff

In a few words, explain what wiki policy was violated:: Incorrect evaluation of sockpoppets and misunderstanding, which is similar to vandalism.

What users are you complaining about? Provide their wiki usernames:: User:Kadı, I want to complain about User:Kadı, please eliminate the injustice and unblock my block

Add any other information that you believe to be relevant for the understanding of this case.: Please read the discussion among the Azerbaijani admins, https://az.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vikipediya:%C4%B0dar%C9%99%C3%A7i_m%C3%BCzakir%C9%99si#Elshad_Iman_(El%C5%9Fad_%C4%B0man)-%C4%B1n_yanl%C4%B1%C5%9F_olaraq_bloklanmas%C4%B1 because I have admitted my mistake and I ask you to allow me to make my edits and I promise that this will not happen again. I can't edit in English, unfortunately, because I'm blocked.

Please let me use the account E.Imanoff, because I do my editing in Azerbaijani languages articles.

At the moment, I am blocked globally for no good reason. Please take action to get out of the global block. 89.219.156.117 15:21, 24 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry but this is not the correct venue. Use Special:Contact/stewards or send an email to stewards@wikimedia.org instead. NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 15:34, 24 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh, please add this text to the stewards' discussion. https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Steward_requests/Global 89.219.156.117 17:52, 24 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Please make an edit request on its talk page. NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 18:07, 24 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Did you mean to do that? 89.219.156.117 18:29, 24 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
No. By its talk page I mean Talk:Steward requests/Global. NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 18:31, 24 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
They ignore it, because there are no results of appeals, can you put it on the main page on my behalf? 89.219.156.117 18:36, 24 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
No, sorry. Given how slow things move here on Meta, there's an advice I'd like to give you: Be patient. NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 18:38, 24 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
This page doesn't seem to be viewed, I can't put it on the main page because there is no permission for the ip address.
My reputation, which I built for several years, was undermined in one day, which is very bad for me. Please help me open my block or post this discussion on the stewards page so that the wiki community and the stewards can accept my apology and give me another chance as a confessed user. 37.26.39.62 11:48, 26 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Archive sites[edit]

Hello. I always archive the webpages am using as references and add the archive url to the reference. But, what if the archive site closes and archived content is no longer available? If the original urls are dead, then the source will be useless. Do Wikimedia has a solution about that problem? Philocypros (talk) 22:35, 10 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

MediaWiki:Rightslogtext[edit]

Is it possible to translate this system message? (something like MediaWiki:Rightslogtext/zh for Chinese users for example) —— Eric LiuTalk 07:12, 12 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Oh I see the subpage now (not in the info, a bit confusing), it is indeed possible, lol. So how could I edit the content of the translation page? —— Eric LiuTalk 07:15, 12 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You can create an edit request at MediaWiki talk:Rightslogtext/zh. — xaosflux Talk 13:53, 12 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
