Michael Garfield returns to ATX for the first time since 2018 for a special double-header of live electroacoustic bardistry and inspiring discussion on the future of technology and society!
Join us at West China Tea House on Saturday May 28th — an all ages show, suggested $20 sliding scale donation. Proceeds support independent art and scholarship, but come one come all — nobody will be turned away for lack of funds.
Book-ended by live music performances, join us for an EFF-Austin live podcast taping with Future Fossils. We're going to be using the recent potential Twitter buyout as a jumping off point to discuss free speech, curation, moderation, and censorship on the internet and social media, as well as exploring bigger questions around the relationships between design, economics, and society.
About Michael:
https://michaelgarfield.blogspot.com/p/musician.html
"It takes creativity to make the next step in a newer, more shocking direction, but it takes a visionary to go beyond the breaking point and meet music on the other end of the spectrum. That’s what Michael Garfield does."
- The Untz
"Inspired, revelatory, heart wrenching, mind expanding noise, as if conducted from the noosphere in a collaboration by Leary, Terence McKenna and Teilhard de Chardin."
– Tom Huckabee

Art and philosophy for an age of accelerating weirdness! Join paleontologist-futurist Michael Garfield and an avalanche of amazing guests for deep but irreverent discussions at the edge of the known and knowable: on science and the philosophy of it, prehistory and post-humanity and deep time, non-human agency and non-duality, science fiction and self-fulfilling prophecies, complex systems and sustainability (or lack thereof), psychedelics as a form of training for proliferating futures, art and creativity as service and as inquiry.

BIO:
Our speaker this month is Daniel Roesler. Daniel is the maintainer of acme-tiny, a widely used ACME certificate issuance library, and gethttpsforfree.com, a zero-knowledge website that allows webmasters manually obtain free TLS certificates without having to install any programs on their servers. He also maintains other open source privacy and cryptography related projects, volunteers for the League of Women Voters, and is the founder and CTO of UtilityAPI, a clean energy software company.
TALK SUMMARY:
As of April 2022, the nonprofit Certificate Authority "Let's Encrypt" issues TLS certificates for 280 million websites (2-3 million certs per day, ~25% of all websites).
All for free. As a non-profit.
How did they pull this off? What has the impact been? How does this even work? In this presentation, you will learn about the impact of the mass adoption of encrypting websites and how the ACME protocol works for issuing free certificates.
