On February 12th, 1908, forty-seven student-athletes from the intercollegiate varsity sports of the University of California (Berkeley) founded the undergraduate Letterwinners Society of Cal athletics, The Big C Society®, in order to establish the standards for earning a varsity athletic letter. Now organized as a 501(c)3 charity, The Big C Society® invests in technology and events that spotlights Cal’s varsity alumni in post-sports careers, and connects our community of student-athletes and alumni in a network. It also invests in sports equipment for our teams and medical funding for Cal student-athletes with life-threatening injuries or illnesses. Finally, The Big C Society® continues to steward the standards for earning varsity letter awards at Cal.
