Bio

I’m the development manager of Yoast’s plugin team. I enjoy optimizing processes and being the communication link between Development, QA and Product.

Over the years, I’ve been part of many of Yoast’s development teams: I joined the inaugural MyYoast team, switched back to the plugin team, became team lead of the Gutenberg integration team, and later of all plugin development teams.

On Contributor days you’ll find me at the Core or Gutenberg table to write or test code, the Polyglots table to translate, the Marketing table to subtitle videos, or the Docs table to write or review docs.

To relax I like to go for a run, visit a museum or discover a new place. I have a passion for linguistics and history.

WordPress Origin Story

After studying linguistics, I applied to the only job posting I have ever seen to this day that had ‘Linguist’ as its title. Little did I know that I would become part of the WordPress community a few months later.

During my first few months at Yoast, I focussed on developing content checks to help our users to write more readable content. When I was asked if I wanted to assist in writing the code for those checks as well, I immediately said yes!

Because @mariekerakt and @joostdevalk were going to present this new feature on WordCamp Europe 2016, I was asked if I wanted to travel to Vienna as well. Of course, I wanted to join! From the moment I entered the venue, I was sold. There were so many friendly people and interesting talks. There really was a sense of community.

My temporary move to the development team at Yoast turned out to be quite permanent. When I became the lead of Yoast’s Gutenberg integration team in 2018, it was the first time I really contributed to WordPress’s code. Among other things, I worked on the extensibility of the Gutenberg sidebar.

My most memorable WordPress contributor story is spending months of Thursday afternoons with @terwdan documenting all the regexes used in editor.js.
