🤪 Still catching our breath and catching up on highlights after the whirlwind of spring quarter! Our first Denning Visiting Artist Fund awardees *finally* made it to campus this spring after their residencies were postponed from 2020! Turkish oud player and composer Necati Çelik, co-hosted by the Abbasi Program in Islamic Studies and the Department of Music, taught a course for students in the Ottoman Music Ensemble, culminating in a year-end performance at Dinkelspiel Auditorium.

Indian photographer Gauri Gill (MFA ’02), co-hosted by the Department of Art and Art History and the Center for South Asia, conducted critiques with MFA students and hosted an open studio, sharing her process as she worked on three book projects.

The Stanford Visiting Artist Fund, established in 2019 in honor of Roberta Bowman Denning, brings renowned artists to the university to deeply engage with faculty and students in departments and programs across the campus. The endowed program will continue to fund one artist each year. 🤞 for no more COVID delays!

Congratulations to @alexandra__stergio and @connorleeok (both MFA DocFilm ’22), whose short films are featured in The New Yorker Documentary series this month! Stergiou’s “The Act of Coming Out” blends real life and performances by queer and trans actors to achieve an uncanny emotional resonance as the film asks, “What is the role of performance in the stories we tell about ourselves in our lives?” O’Keefe’s “Imagine A Body” is an evocative take on the varied experiences of transmasculine people taking testosterone in order to medically transition. ✨WOW✨ how incredible is @stanford alumni @kiyanwilliams' first major @publicartfund commission: Ruins of Empire, 2022!? It's their largest sculpture to date and is now on view in the group exhibition 'Black Atlantic' in @brooklynbridgepark.

Co-curated by Dan Palmer and Hugh Hayden, the exhibition Black Atlantic brings together work by Leilah Babirye, Hugh Hayden, Dozie Kanu, Tau Lewis, and Kiyan Williams.

The incredible Amy Sherald is in conversation with Calida Rawles (@calidagarciarawles) for the next @Stanford 'Artists on the Future' on June 6! @asherald is best known for her portrait of former First Lady @michelleobama, but the artist has been engaging with the history of photography and portraiture, inviting viewers to participate in a more complex debate about accepted notions of race and representation for years. On #InternationalMuseumsDay, @CantorArts is joinin

On #InternationalMuseumsDay, @CantorArts is joining museums globally to build community through education, and more specifically, sustainability and conservation.

Artist Petra Cortright's Hellscape Nº17 (2022), currently on view on the facade of the Cantor through May 30th, features a digital painting of an invented landscape. It evokes the rugged scenery and wildfires of California. She created the work in conjunction with A Cool Million, a public arts initiative for climate awareness led by artists and institutions to expand environmental justice programming.

The Cantor’s Assistant Curator of Photography and New Media, Maggie Dethloff, was “excited to work with Petra on this project because of how she works with the Internet and software.” Dethloff understands that the tech industry is an important one to look at critically in terms of climate change. She writes, “technology promises potential sustainability solutions, but it also currently produces a lot of emissions and electronic waste that affect the climate and public health. Considering @Stanford's longstanding involvement in tech, this was an important part of my thinking around this project. The arts can communicate creatively and critically about aspects of society, the economy, and policy that can otherwise be difficult to articulate and discuss. Museums are, as we know, not neutral entities, so we have a responsibility to do this work, around the issue of sustainability and countless other pressing issues of our day.”

The Cantor also hopes to work closely with Stanford’s new Doerr School of Sustainability to contribute to the interdisciplinary work the school will host and find new ways for the arts to participate in and lead conversations around climate action.
