What are the Requests on the Media Views Analysis page?[edit]

Hello, I wanted to ask a question about the Media views Analysis page. I was curious what do the Requests mean? On the side and at the bottom it says Requests I can't figure out what that means and the 2 different numbers either Requests and Daily Numbers why are they so different as in one is higher than the other. I look at my page and am curious what that means as far as my page on Wikimedia commons. Hope this is clear thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Flapper the turtle (talk • contribs) 15:30, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Why does the second citation shows the link rot template not formatted correctly?[edit]

I am talking about the page https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Gross_operating_surplus_graphs.

@VScode fanboy There's more wrong with the template than just that. I left a note at Template_talk:Dead_link#Display_errors. El Grafo (talk) 14:46, 24 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:OrteliusWorldMap1570.jpg[edit]

The information on this picture file (map) is not correct. The true author, as proved by his signature in the bottom part of the file, is Frans Hogenberg who did a later copy of this map, as correctly stated in the text of the article. in other words, the shown illustration, as well as most of the pictures related to it here, are later copies of the original, so they are not from 1570, but from later years — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2.138.14.212 (talk) 15:50, 19 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a way to query for images based on attributes such as type, featuredness, location, category, size?[edit]

In particular, I want to download every featured image, but they’re all spread out across multiple pages. Is there an API or so that can list image pages and get the media URL for each image page? Thanks. Theanswertolifetheuniverseandeverything (talk) 15:28, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  1. Category:Featured pictures on Wikimedia Commons contains all featured pictures.
  2. There is an API, that you can query, for example for all members of Category:Featured pictures on Wikimedia Commons. The result is in JSON or XML.
  3. Why would you do that? It has already been done. Someone stole all the featured pictures and is selling them at Alamy. If you buy all, you may get a disount.
  4. The way to query Commons for pictures with attributes like type, featueredness, location, category, size and more is SDC (Structured Data Commons) and sparql. Only someone needs to add all the SDC to the ~90 million media files at commons.
--C.Suthorn (talk) 14:10, 22 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I don’t want to steal the pictures, I just want an archive, because I like all the images.

Uploading photographs to pre-existing articles[edit]

Hello!

I am trying to upload original photographs of prehistoric sites I have taken over the years to pre-existing articles that cover these landscapes.

Being that I am a new user, I thought these uploads might apply to the editing required for user accreditation.

It says we cannot upload the picture due to shared file names.

Does anyone have advice as to properly approach the editing process? How does successful editing accumulate so your own page can be created?

Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by SylvanGreen (talk • contribs) 17:27, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@SylvanGreen: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg photo as a new user. The photo you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller photo, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you took the photo yourself, please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including EXIF metadata. If you did not take the photo, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it as-is, and have the photographer post Commons:Licensing compliant permission for such work on their website or social media presence or send the photo and permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the photo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter. See also COM:ITALY and COM:SIGN.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 19:49, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

How to Licensing for Copyright Occurred While Uploading Photos?
I tried to upload a photo as my own work to Wikimedia Commons. However, the photo I uploaded due to copyright was deleted, stating that the same photo was also published on a website. Which option in the "licensing" section should I choose when uploading a photo from a public website? I also get a previously deleted "You are trying to reload a previously deleted photo" warning. How do I overcome this problem? Thanks in advance.

Hello, I have been instructed to update the logo on my company's page, how do I do this without having previous contributions? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Whitestuff111 (talk • contribs) 10:09, 26 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Whitestuff111: Hi, and welcome. Please see COM:FS and COM:SIGN.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 12:39, 26 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Whitestuff111: But note that if the logo is copyrighted (which it almost certainly is if it reaches the threshold of originality for copyright in your country) then it can be on Commons only if the copyright-holder (which might be either the designer or the company) issues an appropriate free license. Some Wikipedias (notably the English-language Wikipedia) make provisions for non-free content; Commons does not. If you need to go the non-free route, that would involve uploading the image directly to the relevant Wikipedia, not to Commons, and would using en:Template:Non-free logo rather than (or in addition to) the usual {{Information}} template. See en:File:Ballardnewstribunelogo.jpg for an example of such usage. - Jmabel ! talk 14:08, 26 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think you need any previous contributions to upload it. What we need (if it isn't very simple) is the copyright holder licensing it with an acceptable licence, such as CC-BY-SA 4.0. Check with somebody with the powers to license it and use the procedure at Commons:VRT. It may be that the copyright is tranfered to your company, but it might also still stay with the author (who might need to be mentioned on the file description page). –LPfi (talk) 10:47, 30 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Commons is primarily a media repository (also a repository for certain types of datasets). There are very few texts that belong here, unless they are significant published works now in the public domain. Film Award Photo[edit]

Hi

I have a photo I took of an actor at a red carpet event. I'd like to upload it.

I took the photo, but the picture is on a photo wall - with brands of the film festival award.

I note that unacceptable material includes logos. Does this prohibit me using my image on wikicommons?

@Jonschmidt1: Hi, and welcome. Can you crop down to just your picture? Do you have an original negative or electronic file? See also COM:DW.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 00:19, 27 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Jonschmidt1: What do you mean your picture is on a photo wall? Is it a physical wall or a digital wall on some website? Or the photo wall with branding is on the picture? If you have the original picture (either the negative or a developed copy somewhere so you can make a digital scan or develop the negative and make a digital scan, or you have digital copy already, you should be able to upload the picture. Branding behind the photo subject shouldn't qualify as copyright infringement. If it is a wall containing number of photos (either a digital website wall or a physical wall), that's a different story and you shouldn't generally upload content made by someone else. And of course the branding shouldn't be present if it isn't actually part of the image. Also, it would be quite useful if you told us if your photo was licensed under a free license that Commons require (either Public Domain, or Creative Commons Attribution or Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike - CC BY or CC BY-SA), in other words created completely from your own will and not sponsored by the film award organization, or you've got paid for the photo and you don't actually own the copyrights for the image, even you took it (because you took it for them, you got paid for the job, and one of their conditions were your work is licensed under their name and they hold copyrights for the photo). Logos are generally not allowed as they're often subject for copyright protection and thus non-free to use. You may occasionally see some logo here and then on Commons, that may be because the logo was actually released under a free license or the logo is in public domain for being below threshold of originality (COM:TOO), or was released in public domain for another reason (government issued logo, creator of the logo or owner decided to release it in public domain, etc.), so it's not strictly prohibited, it's just mentioned to be cautious of copyright status. If your photo doesn't primarily portray the logo, but the logo just so happens to be behind the subject (it may help if the logo is out of focus a little, in other words slightly blurred), then I don't think it counts as copyright infringement. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 11:00, 27 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Basically, if the logos are incidental to the image, then they can be considered de minimis, much as if there were a logo on someone's clothing. - Jmabel ! talk 14:32, 27 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Reclaiming duplicate with higher-quality upload[edit]

I recently had deleted a duplicate of this file here. However, the duplicate, filename Vice Adm. Karl L. Schultz.jpg, has an upload of higher quality (2400×3000-ish) compared to the current one (500px-ish) despite being uploaded at a later date. Is there a way to temporarily restore that duplicate or upload that higher-quality image to the original version?

Currently unable to find the original link for that higher-quality version, which is why I ask here. SuperWIKI (talk) 17:09, 27 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Convenience link: File:Karl L. Schultz (3).jpg.
  • @SuperWIKI: when you say you recently "had deleted" it, do you mean that you performed the deletion, tagged it with some particular template, or what? Also, can you give a time range? With that info, an admin can probably find it in your logs or your deleted contributions. Without that, it's an awful lot to try to look at.

On top of that, every time you delete my photos without any logical evidence, what is your problem?[edit]

I have the authorization from the organization and assure that I will not infringe any intellectual property rights, knowing that I abide by all the laws of the DMCA and also the source of the image is the official website of the National Resistance Front in Afghanistan which itself has a license from the DMCA — Preceding unsigned comment added by EBUBAKIR (talk • contribs) 20:30, 27 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The logic couldn't be clearer. The source from which you have taken this image, says: © 2022 - National Resistance Front of Afghanistan - All Rights Reserved.
And just writing "I have the authorization from the organization and assure that I will not infringe any intellectual property rights, knowing that I abide by all the laws of the DMCA and also the source of the image is the official website of the National Resistance Front in Afghanistan which itself has a license from the DMCA" does not eliminate the need for a license, as per COM:L. So, if the rightsholder for this image is willing to release it under a free license, such as CC-BY[1] or CC-BY-SA[2], he should confirm this per email to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org .--Túrelio (talk) 20:34, 27 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Plus, it makes no sense to say someone has "a license from the DMCA". The law doesn't grant licenses. - Jmabel ! talk 23:23, 27 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
& similarly, for File:Sibghatullah Ahmadi.png, where you cite a Twitter feed as your source, nothing on that Twitter feed indicates the license you claim. - Jmabel ! talk 23:26, 27 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Jasonrdunne: If I understand you correctly, the answer is no. You just purchased the right to use them for your character in a game, right? You presumably did not purchase the copyright for the art and become the sole owner of the intellectual property, right? They can still sell these icons to someone else, any number of times; you cannot. Just like when you buy a book, you are not buying the right to publish an edition of your own. - Jmabel ! talk 04:01, 28 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

File:Real US GDP per capita in 5 epocs.svg[edit]

Wikiversity:Social construction of crime and what we can do about it#US economic growth 1790-2020 includes:

Real US GDP per capita in 5 epocs: 1790 - 1929 - 1933 - 1945 - 1947 - 2020

[[File:Real US GDP per capita in 5 epocs.svg|thumb|Real US GDP per capita in 5 epocs: 1790 - 1929 - 1933 - 1945 - 1947 - 2020]]

I just uploaded a new version of this file, so the fifth "epoc" ends in 2020 and is labeled "1.9%". In the previous version of this file, the fifth "epoc" ends in 2019 and is labeled "2%".

However, the Wikiversity article displays the old version with the last epoc labeled "2%", not the new one labeled "1.9%". This happens with both Safari and Firefox under macOS 11.6.6. A search for information led me to a similar complaint from 2017, which described how to clear cache. That didn't work for me. This discussion also linked to Wikimedia:Wikimedia servers. Does Commmons reside on multiple mirrors, that may not be updated? Or maybe if I wait until tomorrow, it will be updated? I didn't find the word "mirror", so I'm confused. Thanks, DavidMCEddy (talk) 05:30, 28 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@DavidMCEddy: I see 1.9% in the image, so a cache issue is the most likely problem. MKFI (talk) 08:39, 28 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

авторское право на обложку[edit]

Я нашёл в интернете обложку книги империум:философия истории и политики и хочу её загрузить в качестве иллюстрации на страницу про неё,но передо мной встал вопрос:как узнать распространяется ли на неё авторское право? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tiralex (talk • contribs) 21:09, 28 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Generally, any recent image that includes a certain minimum of creativity is automatically copyrighted. So, this book cover is copyrighted and non-free because of the photograph of the sword that was combined with the rather simple title text. Please do not upload it here. Public Domain[edit]

HI everyone,

I'm still very much trying to learn to guidelines of Commons. I came across this image of artist Katt Both taken by Lotte Stam-Beese on Los Angeles County Museum's website. The caption on the image says that the museum believes this work to be in public domain. So I uploaded it to commons in hopes of using it on wikipedia articles of Katt Both and Lotte Stam-Beese -- but I cannot figure out what the appropriate license text is and how to go about adding it. I would appreciate any advice. SleepyWhippet (talk) 05:53, 29 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@SleepyWhippet: Where does it say on the museum's website that this photo is within the public domain? Although the website does state Nearly 20,000 images of artworks the museum believes to be in the public domain are available to download on this site. Other images may be protected by copyright and other intellectual property rights. By using any of these images you agree to LACMA's Terms of Use., that's seems to be just a boilerplate statement applying to this the images found on the museum's website in general, and not this particular image. For Commons to keep this, it would need to be within the public domain within both the US and the country of first publication. Photos first published in the US prior to Janaury 1, 1927, are now in the public domain as of January 1 2022, but that means anything published in 1927 would have to wait (I think) until Janaury 1, 2023 before it's in the public domain. This also appears to have not been first published in the US, but in Germany. That would mean that the photo would also need to be within the public domain per COM:GERMANY. The standard term for copyrighted work first published in Germany by a known author is 70 years p.m.a., which means life of the author plus 70 years. Given that en:Lotte Stam-Beese who took the photo died in 1988, it's would seem to be still under copyright protection until Janaury 1, 2059. German copyright law does not seem to mean 70 years from when the photo was first published (or taken), but 70 years after the death of the author. For this reason, I think File:Hannes Meyer 1928.png which is attributed to a Hermann Bunzel might also not be OK for Commons depending upon when Bunzel died. -- Marchjuly (talk) 10:00, 29 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Searching for C. S. Lewis photos[edit]

To whom it may concern,

I've tried my best to find public domain images (preferably high quality, but really any quality) of author and theologian C. S. Lewis. Unfortunately, I cannot find anything. Does anyone know where there are free images of Lewis?

Already in the Commons is a 1917 group photo including Lewis, and I have uploaded a cropped version that just includes Lewis. Thing is, the cropped photo is in a low resolution and doesn't look great overall. JamesTheLaptop (talk) 15:34, 30 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright help regarding File:MentorPS-Card-logo.png[edit]

I got this image from the MentorSchools.net TLD, how should I put this in the licensing?

--Jackgets (talk) 18:10, 30 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I found no copyright information on the website, which means that the default copyright applies: all rights reserved. As only the copyright holder can choose a license, you would need to get someone from the school district (or whoever holds the copyright) to release the image under a free license. --rimshottalk 19:04, 30 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like the logo is simple enough to be considered below COM:TOO, but I don't know, the bird head kind of spoils it a bit. Does anybody here know or could guess if the logo can be considered below TOO? Text is fairly simple, the only part I'm concerned about is the head. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 06:29, 31 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
A text only logo would be {{PD-logo}}, but I don't think the added cardinal imagery would be considered below COM:TOO United States. This logo probably needs to be reuploaded to English Wikipedia as non-free content (see en:File:Mentor Cardinals Logo (as of 2015).jpg used for en:Mentor High School as an example as to how this might be done). -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:05, 31 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough. Czech laws do not utilize something like Fair Use, which is the reason why Czech Wikipedia cannot accept non-free content, as well as few other Wikipedias. Although, there are a lot of Wikipedias that allow non-free content under fair use rationale. Turns out Fair Use compatible laws are fairly common. I'm not sure if one might be able to upload it to other Wikipedias that allow non-free content as well, of course under relevant fair use rationale. I for example cannot upload anything copyrighted from my country even on English Wikipedia under fair use rationale, because we don't use it. That would be considered a copyright infringement, fair use isn't applicable to Czech copyrights. Polda18 (discussioncontributions) 05:54, 1 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Advice on fixing overwrite[edit]

I have just come across two related nude images that have had repeated overwrites over the years. Some of the overwrites improve resolution (so could be kept) while others change colour detail and cropping (so should have been uploaded as a new file). Some of the higher resolution versions are of the recoloured versions instead of the original (so should probably be deleted). What is the best way to unpick this mess while preserving good versions under a different file name? File:Lilith (John Collier painting).jpg and File:John Collier - Lilith.JPG. Own Photo taken with own camera - Won't let me upload photo[edit]

Dear all, I tried to upload a photo I took with my own camera, still the software does not take it. Why is that? The rights lie with me, and only me. Its a photo of "me in a public place". Please comment and give feed back how I can solve this riddle. Thanks, Ron — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rosc56 (talk • contribs) 14:46, 1 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Rosc56: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload png and smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg photos as a new user while leaving the summary intact, and Special:AbuseFilter/156 by trying to upload smaller (<50,000 bytes) jpg photos as a new user. Such uploads of png images are not allowed at all. The following applies to each photo. You indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a png or smaller jpg photo, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including any metadata, but if you were not the original photographer, that person may need to license it on their official website or social media or send permission via OTRS with a carbon copy to you. Also, any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload svg or jpg versions, too. If you can't get a compliant license, the image may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid filter 153. See also COM:SIGN.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 15:25, 1 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Help Identifying Copyright[edit]

I am planning to add a map from a website. Looking at their copyright policy, they say that everything in all of their pages is free to use. Is that enough justification to upload an image from one of their pages to Commons, if so, what license might it be? Thanks for your help! DiscoA340 (talk) 19:46, 1 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Policy info page (Copyright found in "Terms of use" section). https://www.carolana.com/about_this_site.html

Example of page (said image to be uploaded is the map in the middle). https://www.carolana.com/NC/Counties/craven_county_nc.html

Yes, I think so. You need only to attribute the source. Ruslik (talk) 20:48, 1 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for responding. I also wanted to know if ShareAlike 3.0 or 4.0 would be better for an image like that? DiscoA340 (talk) 01:28, 2 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Attribution-ShareAlike would be best suitable. And the map seems simple enough to be converted to SVG format as well. Conversion of a bitmap to vector is not a trivial process, because they are separate formats. In most of the cases you can use an SVG editor to trace the bitmap, but sometimes you have to trace it manually. If you're unsure of the conversion, just upload the original bitmap with appropriate license and place an {{SVG}} template in the file description, and someone will do the conversion for you. I really don't understand how this helps?[edit]

Someone insists that the train itself is a bus, so he refuses to accept anyone's help or advice. Rename to "Category:Rail substitute bus transport in Taiwan" is undisputable and easily understand to anyone. However, he neither he neither explains what "Train-like Service" means nor renaming the category is permitted, I really don't understand how this helps?! But the further question is: how to break this deadlock?--Kai3952 (talk) 11:06, 2 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Because I can't think of a better way to break the deadlock.--Kai3952 (talk) 12:16, 2 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Which is a good reason to take it to here.
I see there is no discussion at the category talk page, no discussion at the user's talk page, and neither is the issue explained on the categories for discussion page. We are supposed to use Google translate to figure everything out ourselves. This is problematic, as the translations may not reflect the nuances of the name. Your addition of {{Empty page}} to the category page doesn't seem to further calm discussion.
Category names should be the name as used in English literature, the native name (perhaps in pinyin – I think I haven't seen category names in non-Latin scripts), or an explanatory label (according to my rough understanding of guidelines and practices). Commons is not Chinese Wikipedia, but it isn't English either. We are a multilingual community, where local phenomena must be allowed to be described and discussed in local languages. To further cooperation, English translations are welcome and should be provided where possible.
Now, what I understand, the issue is not whether the transport system in question has trains or buses, but what it should be called and how it should be categorised. If it is officially called "Train-like Service" in English, then that is a good first proposal, regardless of the nature of the actual vehicles. If there is no official English name, then we can discuss whether a translation should be used, and what translation then would be best. We might also use a descriptive name like "Rail substitute bus transport in Taiwan", but that specific name would cover also other rail substitute buses in Taiwan (such as temporary substitutes).
This is something to think about and discuss, not something where one party is right and needs to get the other to just give in.
LPfi (talk) 12:40, 2 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The name "類火車" are named only in Chinese and no English, so I can't see that it is officially called "Train-like Service" in English. We are assuming that he neither explains what "Train-like Service" means nor to use a descriptive name like "Rail substitute bus transport in Taiwan", and this is where the problem lies.--Kai3952 (talk) 18:33, 2 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Student loans[edit]

for the loans that have recently been forgiven, I am not sure if I have been part of that group. But I am part of a group that I was wondering if President Biden can see if they can get forgiveness Student loans for people who are over 50 years of age who went back to school late in life. The non traditional student. A lot of students (the younger groups have people coming in now and giving scholarships and paying for college for them and that is excellent. The non traditional student has put out over a 100,000 dollars to pay for school to better themselves so that they can make a better wage, and I am one of those people.

I am looking to see if President Biden can get a student forgiveness for persons who are 50 years or older in Student loan forgiveness.

Thank You.

I'm considering to upload this map from the Barry Lawrence Ruderman map collection. I've saw several maps of this collection in Commons. However, I don't see maps from this collection in Commons that are after 1950s, so I'm having doubts.

What can I do?

Thanks in advance and greetings from Colombia.

--Universalis (talk) 18:40, 4 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Universalis: I don't believe there is any basis to say that map is in the public domain. I'm pretty certain it is still in copyright both in Sweden and in the U.S. It has a copyright notice, which in the U.S. should keep a 1971 document in copyright until 2066. In Sweden I believe a copyright with an organization (rather than a particular person or people) as declared author is good for 70 years, which means 2041. - Jmabel ! talk 18:55, 4 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
