Overview

CHAI began partnering with the government of the Kingdom of Eswatini (formerly Swaziland) in 2009 to help eliminate malaria and improve access to lifesaving HIV diagnostics and treatment. In 2011, CHAI together the Ministry of Health and other partners, began the groundbreaking MaxART program to reduce new HIV infections and dramatically improve HIV diagnosis and linkage to care. The second phase of the program included a pioneering study to help demonstrate the effectiveness of the World Health Organization (WHO)-recommended ‘Test and Start’ approach to treatment calling for all HIV-positive individuals to begin antiretroviral therapy (ART) regardless of disease progression. In 2020, Eswatini, was one of the first countries to achieve the ‘95-95-95’ global HIV targets because of interventions such as MaxART.

Today, we are working to support the ministry of health achieve universal health coverage with a focus on mobilizing adequate resources to fund the health needs of the population, strengthening public financial management, and increasing efficient savings for program implementation. Additionally, we are helping the government to define the benefits package for health workers and make quality healthcare available at all levels of care. We are supporting the decentralization of health services for diabetes and hypertension from tertiary to primary care and development of a healthy food public procurement policy to promote healthy eating. Simultaneously, we are helping to create demand for adolescent-friendly services, accelerating access to oxygen, strengthening surveillance for neglected tropical diseases; soil transmitted helminths’ (STH) and schistosomiasis (SCH) towards elimination and piloting a mobile tool to improve the uptake of childhood vaccinations.
