2022 (MMXXII) is the current year, and is a common year starting on Saturday of the Gregorian calendar, the 2022nd year of the Common Era (CE) and Anno Domini (AD) designations, the 22nd year of the 3rd millennium and the 21st century, and the 3rd year of the 2020s decade.

The United Nations declared 2022 as the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture,[1] International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development,[2] International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development,[3] and the International Year of Glass.[4]

Like the years 2020 and 2021, 2022 has been heavily defined by the COVID-19 pandemic, with the world starting to lift COVID restrictions, which resulted in reopening international borders, as well as the continuing emergence of COVID-19 variants in parts of the world. The global rollout of COVID-19 vaccines, which began at the end of 2020, is continuing throughout this year.

The year has also been heavily defined by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which led to international condemnations and sanctions, the displacement of 13.7 million Ukrainians (7.7 million internally displaced persons and 6 million refugees) and the largest armed conflict in Europe since World War II.

Events[edit]
